Really great weekend
Feb. 4th, 2018 09:20 pmI had an excellent weekend.
Started off on Friday by earreading Jason Reynolds' newest book, Long Way Down. I'm in love with his writing and he reads this audiobook, so it was wonderful hearing the verse straight from his heart. I also mailed out some presents on Friday. I always feel good sending out things that I hope will make people I love smile.
Then I watched Groundhog Day. I watch the movie every year, if I can, and this year
cowboyguy watched it with me because she'd never seen it all the way through before. For the first time ever, I noticed the groundhog quilt hanging in the background and the giant groundhog trashcans that are, like, in 20 scenes (don't know how I never noticed them before now). This was a pretty exhausting work week (Thursday night I worked until 8:30 pm) so it was nice to be able to relax on Friday after work. And having someone over means keeping my house clean, so that was a nice excuse to scrub the bathrooms and vacuum the floors (I even managed to NOT drop the vacuum cleaner on my head this time).
Saturday, my alarm went off at 7, but I slept in until 8. Then I got up and headed to the library. I was working solo that day (no fellow volunteers), so I tackled both the morning bookdrop and the entire picklist (books people have put on hold) by myself. I still managed to get out by 11am! I went to Walmart and found the perfect spiral bound journal to use for my trip to Orlando. It's Frozen-themed and came with stickers and a pen as well (and was only $1.88). I made my ticket reservations for 3 of the 5 days I'll be there and drafted a schedule so I know what days to plan on going to Universal and what days I'll be hitting Disney. Really expensive, but it feels good to have this decided. I'm much less anxious now.
I also started work on my new project: go through one box every week. I got through the box last night, but I still have to find homes for a few of the items that were in it. I'll handle that later tonight. I watched a lot of Highlander as well. Just 3 more episodes and I'll be done with the series again! And the last three episodes are the best ones from the whole season, so it's a relief to leave all the potential spinoff chicks behind. AND I worked out on Saturday. My fitbit doesn't register it as aerobic activity (it did the first time I did the same workout video, and this time I was jumping instead of just bouncing). It was exhausting, but I felt wonderful afterward. I think I need to remember that feeling so I'll keep working out. Also, I bought myself a porg using an Amazon gift card and I'm not allowed to open the package until I complete a month of workouts!
I completed a Samurai Sudoku I found in the box (I actually found about 20 of them, but this one was unfinished, and it feels so good to finish things). I also watched all the episodes of Aces, a web series I learned about years ago and kept forgetting to watch.
I started reading the World of Wakonda TPB (#1-6) on Saturday and finished reading it Sunday morning in bed. I like the characters, but I'm not in love with the writing. I had really hoped for Roxanne Gay to impress me and she just didn't. I went to make my special weekend breakfast (2 scrambled eggs, vegetarian sausage, and an Eggo with oats & berries) and found that I had no saussage patties! So I braved the icey rain outside and went to the supermarket for them. I also bought a small thing of melon (as that was on the list of fruits that aren't WAY HIGH in sugar). I did self checkout but the guy bagging gave me a hard time about buying only two items. "We sell 42,000 things here, and you're only buying 2?" he asked. I replied "I was in the middle of making breakfast and only need these two things. I'm hungry and it's not even 9am and I just want breakfast!" He let me go with a shrug. It was weird. If this store wasn't literally 20 seconds from my house, I wouldn't shop there.
I found places for a few more things from the box and then made arrangements with
cowboyguy to hit Build-a-Bear. They sent an awesome coupon out this morning and I've been wanting a Washington Capitals bear for more than 3 years now. So this was my excuse to finally get one. Before I left, I did another workout (this one with weights), took a shower, and ate a light lunch (6 whole wheat crackers & cheese).
The Build-a-Bear store was uncomfortably packed with tiny humans, which I normally wouldn't mind, but it made getting around difficult and when I was checking out there was one child just screaming and crying and I was NOT happy either. Anyway, I got a hockey bear friend and was pleasantly surprised to find they had black duffle bags as well, which weren't supposed to be in stock at that store. When we got the new bear stuffed, I kissed his pretty, shiny red heart and had Morgan bear so the same, because I'd brought Morgan along to get his pawsport stamped. So my new bear, named Bruiser, now has a bag, skates, a hockey stick & puck, and a full Washington Capitals outfit. Squee! I love him very much. He's a tough little bear, but he also gives nice hugs because his arms are wide. I love him very much. I also bought Morgan bear a new jacket and a new hoodie because both fit his color scheme/style perfectly. I look forward to watching the Caps games with him! When I got to the checkout, however, the coupon didn't apply to him. I was a little frustrated because I'd read the fine print and had just misunderstood the wording. ARG! But I luckily had 3 $10 off coupons/bear bucks/gift certificates. So it wasn't so bad in the end. It still amounts to 25% of my weekly budget though! The store right across from Build-a-Bear was showing Washington Capitals on the TV, so that was a fun coincidence.
I stopped to fill up my tank on the way home, even though it was still cold and rainy outside. I've got to be on the road by 6:45 tomorrow morning, so there's no getting up early to get gas. I realized that I was in the shopping center where I'd been planning on seeing a movie that afternoon, and I realized that I had 45 minutes until the movie started. I found the Best Parking Spot right in front of the theater and then walked to the grocery store where I bought a thing of yogurt (has more protein that sugar) and plastic cutlery. Then I sat in my car for 15 minutes and ate and listened to my audiobook, which is getting serious right now (on disk 10 of 17, and I'm really worried about the characters! I'm reading the third Diviners novel by Libba Bray and am in love with just about every character). I headed in to see the movie, thrilled that there were only 3 other people in the theater. So I picked a good spot and right before the movie started, a family came in and sat right behind me and the kid proceeded to kick my seat for the next hour. I turned around several times and after one espectially hard kick I turned and gave such a look that there were only a couple kicks for the last hour. Anyway, I saw Coco finally. I wanted to see it before I went to Disney World, so I'd be sure to get any references there. I loved the movie. I cried my way through 3 tissues near the end. Even though all the major plot twists were obvious, it was still incredibly sweet and there was fantastic worldbuilding and music. So wonderful.
I got home around 6:30 and finally got Bruiser into his clothes. Poor baby bear was naked for hours. I just watched the Superbowl halftime show and I plan on watching a repeat of the puppy bowl at 10:15 tonight when it's on again. My DVR claims to be recording it, but I can't find it if that's the case. I think my DVR is on its last legs. Which is sad, because I have SO MUCH on it I need to watch. I managed to cut my finger open with a steak knife while eating dinner, but it's not deep enough to need stiches--a Minions band-aid is doing the trick. I snuggled with cats and did a little more Sudoku. Now I'm going to watch the Methos & Joe show and deal with the rest of this box of stuff.
In all, it's been a great weekend. I read two books, saw some movies, hung out with a friend, watched some Highlander (just 3 more episodes and I can cross off another of my 101 Things in 1001 Days goals), cleaned/organized the house, volunteered, worked out twice, got a new bear friend I've wanted for years, and I get to end it all with puppies. In all, a weekend full of happy things.
