His cold wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t so windy on deck.
“hih-hihtchhoo!”
Or if he hadn’t had to jump into the water to fish out the admiral’s orders.
“hihh-ihh-ihhh-HIHShoo!”
Or if he had remembered to bring an extra handkerchief.
Horatio sniffed miserably, feeling eternally, ceaselessly sneezy no matter how he rubbed at his nose. “ihh-HIhhh!” His mouth hung open with need.
“Here.” At that moment, Horatio wouldn’t have cared if it were Napoleon himself offering a handkerchief. Horatio grabbed it and blew his nose thrice before lifting his head and thanking Lieutenant Bush with a grateful smile.

I tried to use three different timelines to figure Pellew's career out, but in the end I had to say 'screw it' and just hope that he was an Admiral at this point in the timeline *crosses fingers* I hope I didn't get anything else in canon wrong; certainly let me know if I did so I can fix it right away. I must admit I wrote thing during NaNoWriMo so it's a little long-winded, but I usually write that way when I write Hornblower fics anyway. Please excuse any errors, though; it's not well edited. I used my lunch break to start writing it, and I couldn't do anything else until it came out! I've set it during Hotspur, some time around chapters 14-16. Hopefully I didn't step on canon too very much this time. Had a lot of fun writing it, though. Horatio's just sooooo nummy when he's miserable :-) I'm so VERY sorry that it's already August and I'm still churning out giftfics. *headdesk* But I hope this meets with your approval, snowshie, and have a great rest of the year!
