Highlander *sigh*
Aug. 19th, 2003 02:32 amAnd this time it's not entirely a happy sigh.
Just watched episodes 'Something Wicked' and 'Deliverance' tonight with boyfriend (in an attempt to cheer him up, which didn't work and now I'm 2 and a half hours behind schedule, gah!) They're my fourth favorite episodes- I like them better than the horsemen eps, even! (right behind 'Through a Glass, Darkly', 'Studies in Light', and 'Homeland'-which we watched two days ago)
Anyway, it's an INCREDIBLE two-parter, IMHO. Lots of theory about what happens to people who must kill to survive. Concepts of evil overwhelming the good, about how it's possible to go back to goo after converting to the dark. Of good and evil quickenings, of what it really means to kill and the difference between killing because you have to, killing because you think it's right, and killing because you enjoy it. Not to mention, Evil Duncan is sexy. And the battle at the end between good and evil is INCREDIBLE. The katana and the claymore- two more different swords you could never find. Yet they did a fantastic job coreographing Duncan's different styles as he fights himself weilding both. BEST sword fight in the series, (though Duende's comes close, but that was a special occasion as well). So the whole thing ends with an incredible bang. Faith, love, reality, good, evil, understanding yourself, KILLING yourself to live. Ah! Incredible! And I turn to boyfriend and asks if he liked and he says, and I quote, "Eh, it was ok."
OK?! Fucking OK? This episode CHANGED the series! It puts into motion so much regret and understanding, pulling themes that have been hinted about for seasons (like Darius' good quickening) and allowing them to revisit it in a whole new way (such as with the whole Duncan tried to kill Richie thing again, and the Joe not getting involved bit). And there's even Methos humor. And Sean Burns, who I ADORE and am glad they bring back for another episode in season 5. Duncan sees both light and darkness. Which is part of a prophecy as old as time itself... and brings up themes that are even in the series finale. Just "OK"?
ARG!
I could discuss and analyze this episode for days on end and still find interesting things to say about it. In fact, I have at times with other fans. But no. With boyfriend all I get is "Eh, it was ok." This is why I can't have a decent deep conversation with the boy. For some reason he manages to have incredible conversations with other friends- talking about philosophy and the meaning of life- but he won't talk to me about it and when I try, he just makes a far at me like I've said something stupid or interupts me. Gah. Then again, why am I suprised? He likes watching pointless crap like Freddy vs. Jason. He takes pleasure in watching movies with "crappy acting and crappy dialogue" knowing that they're crappy. Why would anyone DO that willingly and happily???
I don't get it. I really don't. *sigh* At least the episodes cheered ME up :-) How does it get much better than two Duncans in one room, both looking incredibly sexy? (OK, so it's still only my 4th favorite... but still, you get my rant)
Off to code some more. I think I've decided just to stay up for another 8 hours until my morning's meeting's over. Otherwise I'll get only an hour of sleep and won't be able to drive on that. I'm starting to get excited about possibly finishing my thesis now. It's about, er, 25% done but I've got two weeks. GAH! Off to code...
