Shallow Grave
Aug. 31st, 2003 03:35 pmWow.
I just watched Shallow Grave (finally)
First off... wow. Just wow. You think I'd be used to watching this kind of movie after seeing many others of Ewan's... but wow. If there's one thing I admire the most about that man it's his fantastic pick in movies. Maybe they're not the best, maybe the scripts are a little dodgey, maybe there's more characterization than plot, and maybe they're a bit too graphic... but DAMNIT those are the movies that say the most.
To get shocked out of your seat and still find yourself laughing at the end of it all. To squeal and laugh and almost scream with terror. And to understand. I mean, just a glimpse into some truth, see and understand some truth that you've never even lived. Gods, now THAT is a movie, that is.
Anyway... wow... I actually really liked it. Apart from, er, the emetophobe part of me that had to mute a certain portion and bury her head in the pillow. I don't care about blood and usually gore in movies doesn't do much. But the v-word is what gets me.
But I really liked it, as sick and horrible as that may sound. I was terrified, I was happy, I was laughing at the end. Human nature, man. Can't fight it. Just like Sphere and Lord of the Flies and The Tell-Tale Heart and billions of others besides. When it comes down to it, you just can't beat human nature. And it's bloody freaking brilliant and a half when a character realizes that and is one step ahead of life. Damnit. I really liked it :-)
And as for the Ewan-with-a-bloody-nose scene... I rewatched it a dozen times. DAMN if he isn't just the sexiest man on earth. That accent. That chin. That damn beautiful expression he has when he wears a smile almost too wide for his face. Those eyes. But ooohhhhh half naked, feeling hurt, and talking all stuffed-up. Nearly killed me. That "No" (rather 'Doe') he says after she asks if he's feeling all right. Sooooo adorable!!! And that LOOK he gets, he's smiling, chuckling, then that sudden change in facial expression from the pain which comes SO close to a pre-sneeze expresison... it floored me! Ohhhhhhhhhhh!
And it's funny that everyone else is more naked than Ewan in the movie! Dead guy gets full frontal, chica gets a breast shot, other roommate gets full back nudity. Ewan gets, what, boxer shorts? ACK! As if we haven't seen him naked a handful of times already! (Ok... just Trainspotting and Serpant's Kiss and Pillow Book-YUM- and Velvet Goldmine... but that's almost a handful) They could have given him a nice long nude scene to make everything fair!
Wow... what an adorable Ewan scene... I think it just about tops my list. DAMN I love his acting!!!!!! That "alive-dead, dead-live, did you you notice the difference? It wasn't hard to spot" scene in particular. Man... I love his acting. LOVE it. It's so unique. I love unique acting. And unique acting from a guy who looks and sounds like that...
Growl. I think I'm going to have to watch Moulin Rouge in a minute... I need some more of that wide smile... it's like a drug...
I'll stop rambling now. But damn... I really liked it. Even if I was shaking under my blanket for a few minutes and yelling at characters on the screen. That just means I got into it. Wow. Go Ewan! Good taste in movies. (On the whole... again, I haven't seen Nightwatch LOL)
