Life updates!
Oct. 8th, 2017 06:53 pmSome things...
1. It was book sale weekend at one of my local libraries. I went on Friday, then again on Saturday, and then also today. On Friday I spent my free $20 I had for doing the adult summer reading program... but also ended up with another $34 of stuff, including the BBC Neverware on DVD, two seasons of How I Met Your Mother (2 of the 3 I was missing), several Doctor Who books, several John Green books, a half dozen graphic novels, and this thing that was mixed in with the graphic novels in the children's section called Begierde, Yaoi-Con Fiction Anthology 2005. I opened it up right to a lovely dick-sucking illustration. Definitely not meant for the children's room but certainly meant for my collection.
Saturday, I was on a mission to buy the Heroes Volume 2 graphic novel (I checked at home and found I only owned Volume 1). So I grabbed it and accidentally bought another $29 of books and DVDs, including Highlander 3 on DVD (which is the only one I didn't own) and a couple Christmas presents for family members.
Today, I bought 4 bags full of books for $5 each. I'd estimate I probably got about 250-300 books. Two or three of them are ones for me, including a lovely hardcover of Pulitzer Prize Photographs from the Newseum, which I've had on my Amazon wishlist for ages, ever since I first saw the display at the Newseum. So I'm THRILLED about that. The rest of the books I'll box up and set aside for spring book festivals. I typically try to register about 1,400 books in April and May to give away for free, so it helps to get them when I can, way in advance. I've already got two boxes of book festival books waiting to be registered. And 2 of the 4 bags were kids books, which we always need a lot of. It's great encouraging kids to read!
2. I'm hosting a fanfiction meetup in a week for my Harry Potter group, and we're reading 3 fics for it--two of which are novel-length. I spent most of yesterday reading one of them and finally finished a little after midnight. I really enjoyed it. It was well-written and ended up being a slow burn Drarry fic where Draco kidnaps Harry to hand him over to the Dark Lord but then starts having second thoughts. Harry and Draco get injured or hurt and have to save each other's lives over and over and over again until they both eventually realize they're in love. I loved all the h/c though, at one point, thought "this story could really use a sneeze or two" and then, a few paragraphs later in the very same chapter, Draco spells some leaves to fall on Harry's head and he emerges from the pile of leaves having a sneezing fit. Boy, I wish my wishes worked on things other than fics! LOL I'm going to start my reread of the Shoebox project tonight; hopefully I'll finish it by Monday, but I won't have time on Saturday or Sunday of next weekend to read any of it, as that's my super busy weekend.
3. I'm loving my new standing desk at work, except that I've kind of renamed it to be a dancing desk. I love playing music and dancing along to it, because it A-keeps me awake, B-gets me to be a little more active, and C-keeps the momentum going with my projects. I'm just having a hard time not dancing crazy like I do sometimes when I'm alone at home. I'm a terrible dancer, and I don't want to be too embarrassed in front of my coworkers. It's my office, not the dance floor at Strokes or Babylon.
4. I'm trying to get caught up on Supernatural in time for the convention I'm attending in November. That means I have less than a month to get through 3 years' worth of the show. And one of those weeks (this one) I need to be reading fanfiction on the only 2 evenings I don't have meetups or volunteering. But I just finished season 10 today (there might have been a lot of crying from me this morning when I watched those last few episodes). Hopefully, after this weekend and after the fanfic discussion, I'll be able to make more progress on the show. But it'll feel strange to be all caught up. I don't want that feeling. I always want the feeling that there are more episodes out there. I really don't like the feeling of being caught up and watching week to week. But I am looking forward to not having to avoid so many spoilers.
5. Next Saturday, I've got a project party hangout with my friends. I hope to work a lot on my artefact journal which I haven't touched since our last project party back in March, I think it was. Yikes. I was supposed to go to the MD Ren Faire with other friends that day, and I feel horrible for ditching them, because I've bailed on this trip, like 4 or 5 years in a row now. But it's expensive and I've seen it before. And I love our project parties. On Sunday, I might go to the BookCrossing meetup and then I am helping to host my Harry Potter group's annual Halloween party. We're doing a book 3 themed Halloween this year, so I'm hoping we'll fill the floor with blankets and sleeping bags and pillows. I've already got owl PJs all picked out for the occassion. I'll be running the games. I tend to be running around, trying to organize things and never actually have a chance to socialize or eat during our parties. Which is kind of perfect for me, frankly. This year we'll be playing an HP version of Scategories and an HP version of the card game "Insider" in addition to an ice breaker activity, costume contest, pumpkin contest, and food contest. Should be fun times!
6. I finished a book this morning that I started in May... of 2016. YIKES. I am going to be thrilled to take it back to the library on Tuesday. Now I only have 2 books left to read for the 2017 Pop Sugar Reading Challenge, one of which I am 4 out of 14 hours into already and the other of which I am about 200 out of 320 pages into. My hope is to finish the challenge this month. Also, I'm color-coding the challenge checklist sheet and have run out of different colored pens. So I REALLY need to finish this month! LOL Problem is, my hold for What Happened just came in yesterday and Turtles All the Way Down arrives very soon in my mailbox. Plus, you know, FANFIC THIS WEEK. I wish I could just take a week off of work to do nothing but read and watch Supernatural. That would be ideal.
7. Charlie girl cat (CHARLIE!!!!! Guess what SPN episode I finally watched this morning?) is still doing quite well. She's on antibiotics for another month or so and allergy meds for at least another 3 months. But she can breathe again, and I'm so glad about that. I bought a big container this morning at Walmart for litter, because the only litter they had at the store was in big bags (but on sale!). So I'll have to get that done tonight. Also, I need to do at least one if not two loads of laundry.
8. I'm really trying to be better at eating healthy. I haven't had the time to cook in a while, but I'm really trying to not buy junk food... with the exception of the Halloween candy I bought today, of course. My lunch tends to consist of nuts, cheese cubes, baby carrotts, and sometimes grapes (most times, I save the grapes to eat on my commute home from work; I find that if I eat while I'm driving, I'm less likely to fall asleep while driving).
9. Oh, I went to Northern Virgina Pride last weekend. I had fun, but there really isn't much to do there. We made the rounds at the tents, played a game of giant Jenga, visited the tents again to buy things, and then headed off to Panera to write for an afternoon. I did buy some more buttons and some mini flags that represent my Strokes characters. I'm trying to find a cheap flag display stand that I like so I can display them on the top of my bookshelf or on top of my desk. So far I have flags for Pit, Turbo, Julia, and Olly. The genderqueer flag they had was pink instead of purple, which I didn't much care for and didn't think Ace would appreciate either. But I've been eyeing the one on https://www.rainbowdepot.com/
10. Speaking of Pride, I've got a Google Hangout meetup tomorrow with the local asexuals group. We'll be discussing LGBT stuff. I'm nervous, because I've never actually done a Google hangout before and also because I am thinking about asking for opinions about the SAM, which I know can cause heated debate, but I really want to ask it in a safe space and get some feedback about it. Most likely I'll chicken out. LOL
11. I'm going to try to FINALLY write my Pit & Ace road trip story during NaNoWriMo this year. I'm freaking out a little because I STILL haven't touched my hurt/comfort bingo card, and then there's this for all of November, and then gift fics in December... and bingo is due in December. So it's October or nothing. And I've got two other fic projects I'm working on right now at the same time. GAH! *worried* But I'm excited by the idea of finally getting Pit & Ace to drive cross country together. I've got a few more scenes in my head than the last time I attempted this. So I'm feeling good about it this time.
12. Not sure I have a 12. I just like even numbers a lot. Maybe YAY--hockey is back!!! And Ovie's had hat tricks in back-to-back games now! Can we just end the season right now and give the Caps the cup already? Please?
