The Hobbit
Apr. 2nd, 2004 04:42 pmOkay.... so TG is confuzzled. As I mentioned to Lady Korana yesterday, I have a very difficult time with fake news stories on April Fools Day. So I'm getting really confused by The Hobbit press releases. When theonering.net says they fooled us twice... does that mean that the original press release was indeed valid? A couple of my mailing lists are either still fooled by the press release, or the fact is that it's actually real. I can't tell which. Because I'm gullible. And really bad at not-so-obvious fake news. But considering there's a letter writing campaign in the works... gah. OKAY, so can someone tell me if the letter writing campaign is just because of the switched studios or if it's also the director problem? (i.e. was the original press release a joke or not?) I suspect it WAS a joke because it's on on the studios' press release pages... but then why the campaign? And the double joking wording on the sites?
GAH! Confused! Help???

Date: 2004-04-02 02:40 pm (UTC)I don't know anything about a letter writing campaign, unless there's one out there trying to convince MGM to turn the distribution rights over to New Line (who has the rights to produce the movie, they just can't show it anywhere unless MGM sells them the rights--most likely at an extremely hefty price considering the success of the LOTR trilogy!)

Date: 2004-04-02 02:47 pm (UTC)Well, see, that makes a lot more sense now :-) Thank you for the clarification! I really wasn't sure if it was just because of the studio's battle or if it really did have to do with the director issue from the "press release"
The letter writing campaign is at: http://www.thehobbitfilm.com/
And the bit that confused me was from theonering.net(who first posted the press release, then posted that they'd contacted Newline and found the press release was fake... and then posted this):
Okay, okay. So we played an April Fools on you twice yesterday...but it was fun! And it was for a good cause. You see, while the 'fake' press release yesterday was a surprise to many, we all deep down want The Hobbit to Happen! (No offense Paul Anderson, we really want Peter Jackson to do it though!) Thus, we are starting the 'LET THE HOBBIT HAPPEN' letter-writing campaign. In the coming weeks and months we are going to make sure that New Line Cinema and MGM/UA hear the roar of Tolkien fandom! Follow the link for details. (And for all you Tolkien site webmasters, please join us in this effort! Details on the page.)

Date: 2004-04-02 03:18 pm (UTC)I've since deleted that post, mostly because I was getting error messages because those sites don't like it when you hotlink directly to their pics...my bad! So I removed it. Sorry no one else got to enjoy them, but I'm glad you did!
Also, I sent you an e-mail with a fic I read today. It's good for a little distraction from work and some mood elevation, at the very least!
