Part 7
Your thoughts on:
Note/Warning- this includes topics that get me fired up... and lots of my rambling... and lots of tg-anger :-)
ABORTION:
Everyone should have the right to choose. I cannot STAND people who think we should bring babies into this horrible world when there's already a population problem and no way to take care of them. That's sooooo not fair to life. Having seen abandoned children suffer and die from disease, starvation, and neglect I damn well believe abortion is much kinder, and certainly less painful, and MUCH more respectful to life! I don't fucking understand why people insist that life should be brought into the world when it doesn't have a proper chance and might be tortured and abused physically and mentally.
What REALLY gets me are the idiots who are so pro-adoption and then don't adopt. Especially the ones who then go and use fertility drugs. WTF??? If you think it's wrong, then have the baby and try to take care of it and possibly ruin its life and your own. If you can't (be it financial reasons that make a child suffer or health risks that could result in death or emotional reasons like rape) then I think you should have the right not to.
I don't believe people should be told what to do with their lives or their bodies, in general. And abortion is SO part of that. Choice. All the way.
TEENAGE SMOKING:
Idiotic. I don't think anyone should smoke cigarettes. It shortens your life and is horribly unhealthy. It's just plan stupid to smoke. Let alone when young and it can stunt your growth.
GAY MARRIAGE:
Ohhhh please please please please please PLEASE let this happen. Marriage and equal rights for all!!! I cried for about an hour after watching the news on Monday, seeing all those happy Massachusetts couples *G* I just don't understand how MORE love and MORE equality could ever be a bad thing.
THE IRAQ WAR:
Come on now. What do you think I'm going to say? LOL Gods I hate our current administration... and I cry at least once a weak over news of more people being killed over there. It's just not right. It started out on stupid reasons and is only getting worse now
RELIGION:
I hate organized religion. HATE it. I know, that's strong to say, but I really do hate it. I hate people telling others what to think. I hate missionaries. I hate these bloody wars we fight in the name of it. I hate people saying they're doing things in the name of it that have an impact on others(like passing laws). I hate it when it's used to hurt people (whether emotionally or physically).
I think everyone should be free to believe anything at all. I really, truly do. But I don't like things organized religions have done and would never be part of one. I worship privately and think spirituality is a private, intimate, personal matter when you get down to it- the things you feel when you worship are internal, are are the beliefs and ideas and morals associated with a religion. I've no problem with people discussing religion publically, etc... I just think, deep down, what happens when you're spiritual happens inside of you and the world would be so much better if people stopped trying to push religions on others or change things because they think what's right for them is right for everyone. I'd rather everyone just let everyone think for themselves for a change! A belief is an internal concept... and I think everyone should be free to believe ANYTHING they wish, or say anything they wish about religion. What I don't like is when people come together and use those beliefs to justify hurting others, or to justify acting stupidly in general or ignoring/denying truth.
EVOLUTION:
What? Um, I believe evolution is evolution. It's fact. It's science. Like, um, the rock life cycle... or the digestive system... I'm hungry, can you tell? How else would I feel about it??? I find it VERY hard to understand how in this day and age people still don't understand it. Pick up a science textbook...
Okay... I'm angry now... LOL... angry liberals are dangerous... think I'll go write a letter to my senator or something...

Date: 2004-05-23 12:15 pm (UTC)My mom's entire side of the family is Catholic and ultra-conservative and all (except she accepts evolution-she was a biology major), and I know my mom is highly disappointed that all of her 3 children have turned out so liberal. She claims that college courses have brainwashed us into thinking the way we do, but it couldn't be further from the truth. I feel like I've seen the light. No one politician or group should force an entire diverse society to conform to the 'morals' of one specific sect of religion, not in a country that claims to be based on 'freedom' anyway.
I'm very open about my views on gay marriage, though I keep quiet about other issues so as to not cause undue tension. I mean, if you take the bible literally, the same penalty for homosexuality applies to men who have sex with women on their periods! It's ridiculous that any person who claims to be well-educated would buy into this! I'm just not looking forward to telling my mom that I'm not sure I want my future children to be baptized. Something tells me my family might not be too understanding about that...
Anyway, just wanted to chime in with my support regarding these views (though you'll never convince me to go vegetarian, sorry...I have enough trouble coming up with healthy meals for myself without cutting out the primary sources of protein that my palate can tolerate *G*).

Date: 2004-05-23 12:50 pm (UTC)As for college... if all it takes to turn people liberal is teaching facts and the truth and opening us up to a diverse group of people, well, you can't blame college for that! I just don't understand conservatives. They just feel so selfish to me. But that's just because I was raised the way I was. I grew up in an ultra conservative town, though. I knew two other people in the entire school who were liberals, and that's it. So it was NICE going to college and having others around me who shared my same views on things and weren't afraid to stand up and say them :-) I don't think I'm ever going to forget the number of times I was laughed at in my childhood by classmates for being a liberal though.
I'm very open about my views on gay marriage, though I keep quiet about other issues so as to not cause undue tension.
I do the environmental thing more than anything else, I think. Just because the organizations I'm connected with here are fantastic and really make a good impact. But I try to be as vocal as I can about everything else... especially gay marriage and abortion... but I do avoid religion because I don't want to offend.
I mean, if you take the bible literally, the same penalty for homosexuality applies to men who have sex with women on their periods!
Or having to stone someone for wearing clothes made of two different types of fabrics... or making the woman completely at fault when she is raped... Yeah. Honestly. You can't take the Bible literally. The stories are interesting, the lessons are helpful. The psalms very beautiful. But otherwise, yeah, can't take it literally.
Anyway, just wanted to chime in with my support regarding these views
*HUGS* Thank you! I mean, once I left my hometown and was able to see that there were so many people around me who felt similarly, it was such a relief. But it's always nice to know there are even more out there who consider topics fairly and make descisions based on fact and understanding and fairness... rather than a moral code one has been instructed to believe or else they fear they'll burn forever. I mean, I've NO problem with moral codes... I just think people should think and feel for themselves and understand the full results of their actions before they try and force things on others.
(though you'll never convince me to go vegetarian, sorry...I have enough trouble coming up with healthy meals for myself without cutting out the primary sources of protein that my palate can tolerate *G*)
LOL I'm a peanutbutter addict. And I drink protein drinks. And LOTS of high-protein dairy. I am a horrible cook so actually making tofu is out... but maybe one day... :-)
And you never know. It took a lot to convince me (several years, in fact). And then I swore I'd never go off seafood and I did about four years after that. So you never know. But I understand. Healthy is VERY important. My mother has to have real meat (she can't eat dairy or wheat or peanut butter) so I totally understand that in a lot of cases health really does have to come first. So no worries :-)
