Queer as Folk
Apr. 4th, 2003 03:35 amOK, So I finally just sat down and watched the first episode. I mean, I'd seen little bits before, but never a whole episode, me being a poor college student and all and not getting Showtime. Though, maybe I will now. Point is, I watched the first episode tonight. Perhaps I was inspired by hearing Christina Agulara's song "Beautiful" twice while I was out driving today. Her vid has the most gorgeous bit of two beautiful lads snogging throughout (aside from being what I consider to be a very good video- and that's saying a lot as I tend to hate most) Or maybe it's this sequal to 'Escape' that's been playing in my head since I reread it last night.
Whatever it was, I watched QAF. Dear Gods I'm a fag hag in love. What a lovely show- I mean, really. Had to stop payback a dozen times to giggle at the sweet little cherry boy, but you know, we're all a little, well, naive about sex at one time or another. It's just darn cute when it's a very cute little laddie. Awwwwww! I found the whole cast wonderful- a very realistic mix of lads- and, well, I really loved it. I really did. I laughed (a lot). I cried. I wanted to reach out and hug nearly everyone for one thing or another at one time or another.
So, then I watched the UK version of the first episode. My only exposure to the show before was about 20 minutes worth of one episode late at night in the entertainment room of a hostel in the highlands of Scotland. I knew at once what it was- apparently when I see Brittish blokes dancing about in a club my mind immediately turns to the conclusion that they're gay- apparently it takes normal people like my best friends until they actually kiss or talk or walk near each other to figure that out. But, again, dirty mind.
Anyway, point is, I knew the US version was based off the UK series... I just didn't realize how darn closely it was based off. Bloody hell, it's the same script! LOL OK, so they changed a bit, and the US version added a much-needed queen... and the US version has more US culturally-accepted handsome/attractive men... but really, it's the exact same show. Made me laugh quite a lot.
Not sure which I like better- they're very different. But as much as I adore the accents and vocab, I think I've got to go with the US version- just because it fits me better culturally- Music, pop culture references, attractiveness, the vocab, the gay culture, etc. it's all more American- more familiar- more appealing to me for some reason. Which really wasn't what I was counting on. But little Jusin. Gods, I love him. heehee There just seemed to be more little touches, little details, and more VERY cute lines. Which, I suppose, is the beauty of coming second. Er. No pun intended. I've heard some people say it seems more soup opera-ish (the US version) but I dunno. I think it was just more... detailed and lovely. Though I must admit, some of the little touches in the UK version filled me with much amusement, even though I'd just watched the exact same show. Twas nice to watch it slightly differently, you know?
Anyway, I'm in love. LOL Thinking of restructing my 'need to buy DVDs' list to accomodate seasons 1 and 2 (and eventually 3) of QAF. Man. Wish I had Showtime. Parents have HBO, so I catch that twice a year when I visit- Mom's in love with Six Feet Under- which I must admit I do love- the variety and yet striking similarities between characters is fascinating. But... yeah... I'm in love. Don't you just love discovering new characters? I think that's my favorite part of watching any new show. The new characters. Getting into their minds. Discovering their loves and fears and everything about them. And getting to know them over a course of months rather than just a 2 hour movie, you know? Really in depth. I love it. So excited. *sigh*
