My answers to this week's questions from [livejournal.com profile] thefridayfive:

1) What is your favorite noise to hear?
Oohhh this is a tough one! I assume I can't just say someone speaking with a Scottish accent and be done with it ;-) I like so many sounds... waves crashing on the shore of an otherwise silent beach, long rumbles and rolls of thunder as opposed to sudden cracks of it, a mocking bird I've heard before but who has added a new song to the end of its routine, the way woodpeckers pecks echo so it seems to come from everywhere around me at once, the quiet purring of my cat when he finds me awake in the morning and wants some petting... but I also really adore silence (or near silence, as complete silence makes my ears ring) because silence leaves me alone with my thoughts. The very first thing that popped into my head was the sound of night where I live. The occasional cricket, gentle breezes sweeping by and sometimes shaking leaves on trees, and the occasional sounds of cars passing on streets far away. I like the sound of night here. It's very calming and peaceful. I'm not sure it's my favorite but I've rambled enough for this answer.

2) If you could live in any era of time, what would you choose and why?
Hmmm. I'm VERY tempted to say early 18th Century Scotland because I ADORE that time period to death and know more about it than any other. But, as Diana Gabaldon reminds us, it isn't usually as romantic as I find it. I'd probably find it impossible to adapt, what with the food and clothing and unsanitary conditions. I feel panicked just thinking about visiting the Middle Ages, much as I'd love to do that, also. Any time I'd love to observe, I feel I wouldn't fit in well enough and die in no time. So, realistically, I'd choose to live right here where I am. But if it was for a temporary visit, I'd pick Scotland just before and at the start of the Jacobite rising.

3) You just found $50 while cleaning your house. Where do you decide to spend it?
I'd probably want to buy something on my desired DVD or Book list. However, I owe myself about $500 at the moment (I had to dip into my savings when my car needed to be fixed, and it's nearly depeated) so I'd probably go straight to the bank and put it into savings. But if I was feeling really lazy (which I assume I would be after cleaning the whole house!) I'd just stick it in my wallet and use it when needed. The only times I use cash are when I go to the movies (HP4! RENT! LWW! RENT again!) so I'd probably wind up spending it there.

4) What magazines to you subscribe to/read on a normal basis?
This is easy. I only get/read two magazines.
1- The Highlander- The Magazine of Scottish Heritage. It's published seven or eight times a year and is PACKED with lovely articles I can't get enough of. This last issue, in fact, was my absolute favorite: an article about Robert the Bruce, the aftermath of Culloden, history and significant events regarding Witches in Scotland, info and artifacts about/of the ancient Picts, and humorous poetry. Fascinating and enjoyable.
2- Real Simple. Because, apparently, I identify best with middle-aged housewives. LOL! I ADORE this magazine. Fantastic articles, tips, product evaluations, tips, nummy food, and did I mention tips? This last issue had an article about life lists that really spoke to me, what looks like a fantastic and easy recipe for spinich & artichoke dip, an article about how to send/mail cards, the differences among artificial sweeteners, as well as (most importantly for me!) how to make various choices.

5) If you could witness any event in history, but not change anything about it, what would you choose and why?
Oh wow. I remember answering a question like this in a meme before. There are a dozen I can think of... the signing of the US Constitution or the battle of Troy or Woodstock or the invention of the light bulb or the very first Stanley Cup series... But I might actually pick the Kennedy assasination, though. I wasn't born when it happened so I can't do that "I remember where I was when..." bit but it is such a huge event and I wish I could be there just to position myself where I could look at certain spots to actually determine where the shot came from and who fired it and solve that once and for all.

My house subscribes to Real Simple, too! I agree that that magazine is very interesting and has great tips a quotes. I read it as well, so don't feel so guilty.

Hey TG,
My school mascot is a Highlander. Thought you'd find that interesting.
Hugs,
