GODS that was great. I cried during the parts I usually cry during when I see it in theaters and similarly laughed at all the same moments. It's like seeing the play only less music and a full world around the characters. I thought Chris' choices were very good (not unimaginative like the Washington Post review I read this morning claimed) but the actors and songs really starred. I was so THRILLED at seeing it on the big screen that I know I missed a lot of the details. I'd love to see it again and just sit back and take it all in without going crazy trying to evaluate the presentation.
Mark. Was. Fantastic. Anthony just rocks. Doesn't hurt that he's probably my favorite character. Even though they didn't go so far as the musical and label him 'the observer' it was clear that was his role. And I love that they really emphasized that part of him. Collins was equally fabulous. It's so utterly incredible watching him- the pain and joy and everything that he wears on his sleeve. I think the most magical thing about the movie is how much of the original Broadway cast is there- it's like seeing it as though it were way back then again, with the actors who first became the characters. Such emotion. You can tell how much they love being there.
I loved the whole thing. I was expecting some of the changes, and others were great surprises. But on a whole I really really enjoyed it and thought it was a beautiful version. Mimi was fantastic. Maureen & Joanne's spat was as great in song as it was out of it. And Roger and Mark had SUCH chemistry together. OMG and Angel. Everyone can probably guess that Collins/Angel is my favorite because of SO much h/c. There was a fantastic job done of the hurting and caring (especially as time passed- and I was sobbing) but there was also enough of the beauty of their relationship and Angel's fun side. I'm SO glad that came through well in the movie. I'm glad everything came through well. I was sad to see some things go but, like with HP4, I can understand why the changes were made and I'm okay with them. I loved the final product so much.
I can't wait to go again! ANd it was great going with a fellow audience of Rentheads. People were crying and sniffling along with me. And no fewer than 5 times was there clapping after important numbers. It was really great, like seeing it in theaters (except no one mooed... I did in a whisper *EG*). I'm SO thrilled it was good. And my sister (who hasn't even listened to the soundtrack or seen the production) liked it as well. At least she said she did. So that's great. I worry that maybe it's the artist side of me that makes me love RENT so much. But then I watch it and get pulled right into their family and remember that there's just SO much magic. *sigh*
There's only us, there's only this. Forget regret or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way. No day but today.

Date: 2005-11-27 01:55 am (UTC)1. Anthony Rapp needs to stop being so darn cute right this second, or I may die. I ADORED the Tango: Maureen scene because of the expressions on his face, and the actions he did during certain parts. La Vie Boheme, too. Too. Cute.
2. I have never cried so hard in my life as I did during "Without You" and then the funeral scene. I had to cling to my friend and bury my face in her shoulder to keep from sobbing out loud. I knew, as soon as the people started disappearing from Life Support, what was coming up. And then the camera focused on Angel and Collins for too long a second, and I was gone. The scenes of Angel in the hospital ripped me apart. Angel has always been my favorite. She's so good it almost hurts.
3. Collins said 'Merry Christmas, bitches!'. It made me giggle.
4. Just squee!
5. I never expected it to be as good as it was. I wish I could have seen it with fellow Rentheads, but I don't think there were any more in the theater. It didn't feel like there were, and everyone seemed to surprised by some things. The woman next to me was crying when Angel died/Mimi was dying, so at least I know people ENJOYED it. There was applause at the end, but no mooing at all. I was like you though -- I did it under my breath. LOL
All in all, the best thing I've experienced in a long time. My friend kept looking at me afterwards, and all she would say was 'Aww, Sarah!' because I was crying for a good hour after the movie let out, on and off.
Will I lose my dignity? Will someone care? Will I wake tomorrow from this nightmare?

HELL yes! Gods, I love that boy. *snuggles* So cute. Sooooooooo cute. *resists urge to pop in Adventures in Babysitting right now* (I would, except that I'm watching the Capitals/Rangers game and then I need to watch PotC again to finish your fic. LOL But, yeah. Soooo cute! So glad you liked him too!

The Washington Post review didn't like the dream sequence thing, so I was warry of it... but I rather liked it. I thought he was SO much fun to watch when it was his moments to shine.

Awwww Sar! *hugs*
I knew, as soon as the people started disappearing from Life Support, what was coming up
Given the PG13 rating I figured they took out 'Contact' and as soon as 'Without You' started this was what was going on in my head "Yay! Without You! OMG Angel's going to die at the end of this song! Noooooooooooooo!"
I was already crying when the people started disappearing (I cried first during the second Life Support meeting when Roger showed up! Roger!!!!! *gives him a comforting punch in the arm*) but I thought the disappearing part was very well done visually.
The scenes of Angel in the hospital ripped me apart. Angel has always been my favorite. She's so good it almost hurts
Absolutely. And what an incredible amount of influence she has on everyone, just by being who she is! That's what everyone should aspire to, IMHO. Being exactly who you want to be and having people around you love you and inspired by you because of that.
But, DAMN those hospital scenes... I loved Mimi there... and Collins holding Angel just killed me. OMG I love them. His song at the funeral was even more moving than I thought it would be. So incredible.

I laughed, as did many in the theater with me. He SO rocks. That's going to be my slogan this Christmas. LMAO! I also loved Mark's comment about not getting beaten up this time when he throws down the key again at the last scene because that was JUST what was going through MY mind.
4. Just squee!
Yes yes! Absofuckinglutely squeeeeeeee!
5. I never expected it to be as good as it was. I wish I could have seen it with fellow Rentheads... There was applause at the end, but no mooing at all. I was like you though--I did it under my breath
Moooooooo! Lots of people laughed during Maureen's performance (which is good) but even after seeing the show 4 times in theaters I've never seen or heard people around me actually crying along with me. So it was incredible to see the movie with others who felt the same thing I did for the characters... even if my sister wasn't at all talkative. LOL
I sat down in my seat, put down my drink, and then dug my new package of tissues out, broke it open, and was all ready. LOL I can't wait to go see it again, though, knowing it's so good and knowing what to expect. (I kept wanting Mark & Roger to hug during 'What you Own' but then I saw their facial expressions and decided that wasn't going to happen. And then they did! Awwwww! So, yeah, it'll be nice to watch it and sit back and see all the little things that I missed the first time because I was SO deeply into it.
My friend kept looking at me afterwards, and all she would say was 'Aww, Sarah!' because I was crying for a good hour after the movie let out, on and off.
Awwww! I was okay afterwards (unlike HP4 where I was EXACTLY the same way, crying all the way home) but that's what RENT always does to me. I always feel so... inspired and uplifted and enthused at the end...
But as I was standing in the bathroom afterwards splashing water on my face, three other girls were standing there doing the same thing as well.
Gods. It's so incredible how this story, characters, and music can touch so many people SO powerfully. I hope somewhere Johnathan Larson knows how people are affected by his work. It's so sad he couldn't be around to see the movie.
*wipes tears out of eyes* I'm SO glad you got to see it! I knew you WOULD love it, too. But it's great to know you DID love it! *sigh* Happy. Thanks for the post!!!
