Important Question- Help!

I've got a question for all you slash connoisseurs out there...

I'm writing a story where the whole point of it is for a character to lose his virginity. But I'm stuck at the portion where he actually *does* the deed. The block is that I cannot figure out if he should be topping or bottoming. He's the sort of character who could go either way, as is his partner at the moment (who is very much not a virgin).

So the question I ask is: as a reader, when you want a "first time" and "virginity-losing" fic, what would you expect to see- the character getting fucked up the arse or the character doing the fucking? Or would it not matter to you so long as his virginity to that point was well-established and clearly he's having sex of some sort.

I can see it either way... but I think maybe readers might consider one over the other to be more of an act of losing virginity for a gay man. So, yeah, that's why I'm asking.

Any thoughts?

Oh, gee. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have believed that I could answer a question like this but you and some of your fics have changed all that. Uh, based on most of the, uh, virginity losing fics I've read the virgin loses it as you put it while "getting fucked up the arse". It really depends on the characters personality though, I would say. Personally I like fics where the first timer is kinda innocent and such with the other more experienced person showing him the ropes or what not.

I completely agree with smokeycat. I honestly can't think of any 'first-time' fics where the virgin is the seme/top and the experienced one the uke/bottom. The only exception I can think of is if both parties are virgins and then someone has to be the one to do the fucking up the arse. But in terms of a sexually active man teaching the virgin about the wonders of gay sex, it always made sense to me for the more experienced person to be doing all the work, so to speak. That way the virgin doesn't have to worry about doing anything other than awakening to new sensations. *G*

The only scenario I can come up with where the opposite set-up might work better is if the person is only a virgin to gay sex, not sex in general. In that case, he might feel more comfortable doing the penetrating since it's what he's used to with women.

It might be interesting to mix things up and break 'first time' stereotypes. But then again, such things are popular for a reason...people like it that way! Either way, I won't turn down nummy slash! ;-)

I haven't got the faintest idea what a connoisseur is, but I don't think I am a slash connoisseurs. But based on what I know about people and sex in general, not slash specific, it makes more sense to me that a virgin would be on the bottem.

It may make literary sense for the virgin to be on the bottom, particulary if the other character is more dominant anyway. However, I was informed by a friend (who should know) that men are usually top for their first time. But I would see both as a loss of virginity, although being on the bottom may require more trust?

Hmmm interesting question. Here is my 2 cents. I think most people write the virgin on the bottom b/c he is the inexperienced one in the relationship. Most times it is the domineering one that is always top and takes control and the more submissive personality bottoms. So, being of that thought, the virgin is normally the inexperienced submissive one personality wise. Also, it might have something to do with being able to hold out for longer if you are on the bottom and being a virgin male no one really expects you to last long to begin with so it just might be convenience to have him in that position.
