The Golden Compass
Nov. 29th, 2007 12:48 amSo I recently finished the His Dark Material trilogy; I've wanted to read those books for about 12 years now and since the first book is coming out as a movie I decided I had better read them before the movie came out. As it stands, I absolutely ADORE the series. I cried a little at the end (naturally). I thought they were beautiful and clever and magical and they definitely made me think.
And according to the website, my Deamon takes the form of a moth.
Anyway, I've been soooo looking forward to the movie. If I'm fast-forwarding through commercials during shows I've taped, I actually back up if I see a commercial for the movie, just so I can bask in it. I think I like my Lyra and Roger better than the movie ones, but Lord Asriel (yum) and Iorek look incredible. And I can't wait to see it played out on the big screen!
So tonight I get an invitation on Facebook from one of my cousins (high school aged), wanting me to join some group called "DO NOT support The Golden Compass" *sigh* Makes me so sad, these people boycotting things without even reading them first. I know it's not exactly a new trend... but it makes me sad that my extended family can be so close-minded.
I did a quick search and found this very interesting article about it:

Anyway... I already asked the nice lad I went on a date with Sunday to go see The Golden Compass with me *G* I honestly can't wait.

Date: 2007-11-29 12:25 pm (UTC)It's been an odd reaction the The Golden Compass on both sides of the debate here. The Catholic League is urging parents not to let their children go and see it because of the anti-religious sentiment and the anti-religious side (for want of a better term!) are disappointed by it because a lot of the Anti-religious feel of the books has supposedly been remove or toned down!
Guess you can't please them all!
I'm really looking forward to it myself, I think Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter could be an excellent piece of casting. I'd be interested to know what tyou think of it once you've seen it.

Date: 2007-11-29 01:53 pm (UTC)Oh, and my aunt has been sending me lots of Republican, pro-war, and religious forwards in my email. I got one urging a boycott of His Dark Materials and it took a lot of willpower on my part to be a good niece and just delete it rather than shoot back a reply saying 'Wow, a movie that promotes logic and rational thinking over dogma! I'll be sure to see it lots of times!' That would have made for an uncomfortable Thanksgiving gathering...
