Boy, I've busy lately.

My LGBT bookbox came home filled with great stuff I don't have enough time to read! LOL I MUST finish sexy gay faerie book before the faerie convention. And I need to finish Maus because it's due at the library soon. And I have two bookring books to finish ASAP.

Tuesday: Book club! One my the local BookCrossers (who's also an author) runs a book club and this month was Outlander. So I HAD to crash the party to talk Outlander goodness with a group! Except the crowd turned out to be just her and me! Still, it was loads of fun talking about the book (especially since we both loved it). Total fangirly love fest with a lot of literary comments thrown in there. heehee! October's book is On the Road. I'm halfway through it now, despite the fact that I'd thought this would be a one-time thing! LOL And November's book is one I just listened to as an audio drama. So looks like they're stuck with me for two more meetings! LOL

Thursday: Porn_battle ended. Only managed four pieces, none of which I really loved all that much. Wish the battle had been on at a different time!

Last week: Fall for the Book Festival was all last week. We BookCrossers had a table on Thursday and I bought 222 registered books and released them. Sister and her boyfriend were supposed to stop by and see me since I was on campus and so were they... but it "slipped their minds". Just one more example of my family completely ignoring my existence. *sigh* No worries, though. I've learned not to expect anything of anyone so I don't get let down. Still, it was a great day. The rain held off for a few hours and we moved inside with the books pretty painlessly (thank goodness I remembered to take my parents' dolly to haul the three boxes and two bags of books I'd brought). I've had a couple books I left on campus found and journaled since then. Yay!

Friday: Then I saw Michael Cunningham talk on Friday. He was a fantastic speaker- incredibly insightful but didn't take himself or his profession seriously, which is certainly refreshing :-) He said some interesting things about the relationship of writers, readers, and the books we share. I especially liked his bit about how literature doesn't have to TEACH something to the reader. It doesn't have to have that sort of an obvious message. All it needs to do is have a relationship with the reader. He compared his hopes for a book to the relationship with his partner :-)
Afterwards, I got him to sign my copy of A Home at the End of the World. I even gave him an intelligent thank you and shook his hand.

Saturday: Got up way early and went to the National Book Festival in Washington DC. It was a day full of ups and downs, but mostly ups.
The good: Alexander McCall Smith ROCKED! He was just as funny as when I saw him last year. A few of the same jokes, but some new info about his books and such, too.
Author of Code Talkers was at the kids/teens tent. He was wonderful. Going to track down some of his books soon.
Neil Gaiman was wonderful! Mmm. I walked right by him on the way out, too. Just a couple feet away from that sexy black leather jacket. heehee! He read from his new book, which I tried to go straight over and buy (available on early release to us only!) but all sold out. So I didn't get him to sign anything. Listening to him talk was great, though. Also nice to know he likes when people experience his works as audio books. (Good, because I have!) I'm really interested in this newest book of his.
Released 50 books into the wild, many at cool, themed locations. "Ducks Don't Get Wet" in a protective plastic bag by a fountain, D.C. Rider on the wall surrounding the Capital Building, books with states in the title at the State Pavilion, two dinosaur books by a dino skull sculpture, some sea books by a sea mural, Murder at the National Gallery in front of the National Gallery.
Had a great meeting with other BookCrossers and some LibraryThingers. Met new people and had fun talking books & events.
Went back to a friend's house and met her scruffy, energetic dog and helped pack goody bags for the upcoming Unconvention I won't be able to go to
The bad: Water got on my digital camera and killed something in it. It'll still take okay pictures, but the realtime viewscreen is totally messed up. ARG!
Carrying 50 books on my shoulders totally killed me. Legs and feet hurt from walking. HUGE bruises on both my shoulders and across my back. Pulled several muscles. Sweated my weight and felt really icky and drippy all day. And then had a headache so bad it made me nauseated... but I'd left my pills in my other bag! So I was miserable for about 5 hours straight at the end of the festival afterwards. I got home and collapsed and cried in the shower until the meds kicked in.

Sunday: Went to see RENT at the movie theater. Had to drive nearly an hour to Potomac Mills and pay $20 but totally worth every cent (plus gas is about 30 cents cheaper, so I filled up). I SO hope they put that version out on DVD eventually because IT WAS SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!!! I started crying when the LOGO went up on the screen. MAN I'm such a softie for that fandom! But it's because it's so good. Not only was it like watching it on Broadway, but it was even better because the camera was right there, on the stage. The camera choices were inspired and you could see tears on their faces. It was raw like it's supposed to be and so much more intimate than it could ever be seen any other way. AMAZING. And at the end, the original cast and some other important people made an appearance to sing Seasons of Love and just when I thought I was all grins and no more tears, I broke down crying again. SO BEAUTIFUL and such a wonderful way to end an era. I'm SO glad my Kindred Spirit let me know about that so I could go see it and say goodbye to RENT properly.
While at the mall, I went to the LEGO store and bought $15 worth of "pick a brick" and stocked up on mostly blues and a few greys for my Harry Potter creations :-)
I also went to the JCPenny Outlet (where about 80% of my clothes come from) and bought new jeans I hope I will be able to fit into after they're washed and two new shirts I can wear with my suit or as casual wear. $34 in total for the three items. Not great (I'm cheap, what can I say?) but that's about how much a pair of jeans (or half a pair) costs in places normal people shop.

Tomorrow: going to Japanese hibaci (sp???) for a going away lunch for one of my favorite coworkers :-( Then we're having a publications department party (all 4 of us) over at my immediate boss' house. I have to leave early to go to my Writers' Roundtable group.

Friday: Board meeting for work. Should be quick enough but I have to get up WAY early and I'm already nervous as Hell (as always). I'm doing a great job on the website but I still get nervous standing there alone and speaking to our whole board of directors who could ask me anything!

This upcoming weekend my plans are:
Saturday- AIDS Walk Washington. I'm not volunteering but not raising moneys this year. They've been going through new restructuring and new management and have some religious affiliations now and... I just don't know how I feel about it. I'm going to put in the time to help, because help is needed and it's the least I can do. But I don't feel right asking for money from friends and family until I've decided if I like their new policies and such (several of their programs have closed and shifted around).
Sunday- Assuming it's not raining, I plan to go to the National Zoo and (after 3 years of wanting to do this) FINALLY see the new baby panda (who is no longer a baby, unfortunately) and release some animal books into the wild.

Let's see... OH! More! There's more! Here:

*I bought a new cell phone because my old one was crap and the plan expired and I didn't realize it and CRAP. So hopefully this new one will be better. No awesome iPhone for me, though. Another TracFone. But this one takes pictures! Yay!

*The new WRock CD I bought is amazing. I'm totally in love with it. I want to buy some Oliver Boyd albums, too, but money is NOT something I should be throwing around now. Yet I am. Bad tg. Very bad.

*I also found a lovely pair of brown antennae/feelers for my faerie costume I'm thinking of buying online. Must decide tonight so they have a chance of getting to me before the convention next next weekend!

*I came up with an idea for a pumkin to carve for my DADA (Defense Against Dumb Asses who don't get Harry Potter) Halloween Party on the 18th.

*Today I decided it would be FUN to clean up and self-publish a volume of Strokes stories on LuLu.com. Going to be a long-term project, naturally, but I've already got a title and concept and am really excited... even if it'll take me another year or two to finish enough stories to fill the volume! LOL

*I got another plot bunny today that's biting. This makes three HUGE ones in the span of two weeks, and I still haven't finished this Remus/Sirius FQF Fic so I can't work on them. CRAP! Maybe I'll cheat and start one and see how it goes...

Going to pop Iron Man into the DVD player now and give it a go. Never seen it. Looking forward to it...............
