tarotgal: (Fight AIDS)
[personal profile] tarotgal
Once again, I am participating in AIDS Walk Washington, which is October 3. As you may know, I've volunteered at the Walk almost every year since 1997 (and I participated as a walker in 1996). Most years I like to try to raise money in addition to volunteering. This year I'm raising money for this event as part of the Harry Potter Alliance's Magical Acts of Kindness campaign. So whether you want to support me, want to help the cause, or just like Harry Potter, please consider making a small contribution before this weekend.

ANY donation amount (even just $5) is fantastic. Your donation helps Whitman-Walker Clinic to provide vital health care and supportive services such as primary medical care, free HIV testing and counseling, mental health care, medications, legal assistance and other services that clients need. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

Some shocking facts about HIV/AIDS in this area:
* DC has the highest rate of new AIDS cases per 100,000 population in the United States -- a rate that is 12 times the national average.
* The DC Department of Health's HIV/AIDS Administration has confirmed that 3% of the adult population of the District of Columbia has been diagnosed with HIV. However, the actual number of people living with HIV in DC is likely to be 5-6%.
* In DC, heterosexual sex is the most common mode of infection, followed by men having sex with men, then injection drug use.
* The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now estimate that more than one million Americans are living with HIV. Up to one-third of them do not know they are HIV-positive.
* In DC, 81% of all AIDS cases are among African-Americans.
* More than 15,000 people in the Washington metropolitan area live with AIDS. Tens of thousands more people are estimated to be infected with HIV.
* Nationwide, someone under the age of 25 is infected with HIV every 30 minutes.

Thanks so much! And if you can’t donate this year, that’s perfectly okay. Just please send happy, dry thoughts my way for Saturday (from many years of experience, it’s a whole lot more fun when it isn’t pouring rain on walk day!)
