Parents & LotR
Jun. 8th, 2003 03:46 amMy parents don't show a lot of affection towards each other in front of me or my sister. I've always considered that to be one of the reasons I'm a bit screwed up in that department. I've seen them kiss twice in my life, and one of those two was because my sister and I sort of egged them into doing it. The point is, it's always rather shocking when I hear romantic things about my parents. Not that I don't think they're great to eachother in private... just that it's kind of, well, not normal to see it. I've never doubted their love for each other, just don't see it in hugs and kisses.
ANYWAY I was on the phone with my Mom tonight- and I was talking to her about my Boyfriend refusing to read the 5th Harry Potter book, instead wanting to get the book on tape since he's so used to the [wonderful] Jim Dale reading them. And Mom said I should read it to him. I reminded her that I DON'T read out loud. And she started telling me about how when she and my dad were early into their relationship how they used to lie in bed together and my dad would read her the Lord of the Rings books- they went through all three, then The Hobbit.
Now is that not the sweetest thing?!!! Yeah, I know it's my parents, but when you get old, it stops being quite so weird. LOL I was just blown away. My dad IS sweet... but he and I aren't really that close and he doesn't really do the affectionate father thing... so it's just.. man... what a sweet thing!!
OK, so maybe I'm a romantic geek, but I can't think of anything much better than going to sleep or waking up in one's lovers' arms as he reads you Tolkien! Course, maybe if he had a cold at the time... but I'm not going to go there cuz then I'll start connecting that with my father, too, and that totally squicks me. LOL But really *sigh* Too sweet.
