4. A Before
Sam snatches up a tissue and bunches it at his nose. “huhh-HITChhhufff!” His sneeze, powerful at the best of times, sounds infinitely louder in the quiet library. He ducks his head behind a book, willing his cold to go away. He told Dean he should wait back at the motel or even in the car. But Dean had insisted he needed to keep an eye on Sam and the research would go faster with the two of them reading. Even if Sam’s attention kept straying from the words on the pages to the tickles in his nose.
Sam glances up. There is a girl studying at a table nearby. She glares at him but the moment he meets her gaze, she looks back down at her notebook. Sam knows he should apologize for disturbing her, but his voice is all rough and scratchy from coughing into his pillow all night long. It sounds worse than he feels.
Dean returns from the back with several volumes of bound newspapers. They thump onto the table loudly, but not as loud as Sam’s sneezes.
“hih…” He grabs for another tissue. “huh-Ushufffff! Uhh…” Sam rubs his nose and looks up, noticing a guy two tables away staring daggers at him. But instead of getting mad the guy just gathers up his things and moves toward the back of the library.
“Baybe I should go?” Sam suggests.
“Keep reading. There’s a lot to get through,” Dean replies, gesturing toward the book in front of Sam. Then he gestures toward the small pack of tissues. There are a lot of those to get through as well.
Immediately, Sam takes a new tissue and holds it to his nose. It’s as if Dean knew he was just about to sneeze. “HuhhhKShuhhhh!” Sam looks warily over at the library’s circulation desk, sure any second one of them will march over and order the Winchesters out for disturbing the silence. But the librarians there are busying themselves with checking and out books as if they heard nothing.
Dean opens one of the bound volumes and starts leafing through it. “No one’s going to say anything.”
And then Sam realizes what his brother has done. He’s not sure how he feels about this, but it does explain a lot. What’s done is done and they’ve got work to do. Sam relaxes back into his chair.

Date: 2013-09-13 09:48 pm (UTC)But I could totally see Dean threatening people so not complain so Sammy won't feel so embarrassed about having a cold :-) Glad you liked! (And I hadn't even thought about bribing as a possibility, but I could see that too--whatever it takes for Sammy to be okay)
