For the month of April, I’m breaking out of my usual “format” and showcasing one of my favorite fandoms a day, so I will have shiny things to make me smile every day of my birthday month. When I sat down to write the list of my top 30 fandoms, I found the task terribly hard. How do I choose just 30? My apologies to all my beloved fandoms left off the list. I’m using random.org to determine what fandom gets what day.

ER

Favorite Episode: At the time, “Hell and High Water” (it freaked me the hell out but it was SO GOOD). Now, it’s “The Long Way Around” (because it was the first time I saw Ewan McGregor in something). I’m not sure what it says about me that my two favorites are episodes with central drama taking place outside the ER.

How I Got Into It: I read every Michael Crichton book I could get my hands on when I was a kid. So when I found out he’d helped create the show, I was so looking forward to it. The first episode blew me away. Also, I am pretty sure the promos used Enya music. So I was hooked before the first episode.

Fangirl Intensity (scale of 1 to 10 with 10=full-out obsessed): 6 (I watched it faithfully for years but missed a few seasons in the middle when I was away at college. It broke my heart, doing bad things to some of my favorite characters, but it finished strong; I think I cried my way through the entire last season)

How I Fangirl: I just watched episodes. Not much more than that, actually. It’s always going to have a special place in my heart.

The Only Merch I Own: A mug with the show’s logo on it.

Why I’m Glad I Fangirl It: As a writer, you really can’t beat ER for examples of good drama (yeah, yeah, birth and death in the same episode… but it’s done SO WELL and didn’t shy away from hard topics; also, all the feels). It was also great getting to watch complex character arcs play out as the show lasted so long. It taught me a lot about adapting to change as well.
