I'm bad at taking hints. I was supposed to go to a movie (The Martian) tonight because I have a free movie pass that's good for only another 10 days, and with the blizzard coming, I thought I'd better use it today. I had to work late tonight, so I was in a rush when I left. I needed gas and stopped at the station across from work and cars weren't moving. I waited 15 minutes and then found that the pumps weren't accepting credit cards, so everyone was waiting inside in line to pay. UGH! So I went to the station I hate and of the pumps I was waiting for, one was out of order (and everyone on the other side was going in the wrong direction, which I HATE). THen I found that I'd left the gas tank open the whole drive over... and it was snowing a little. So I got home an hour and 15 minutes late to feed my cats. I discovered Cassie had had diarrhea a second time today, both times outside the litterbox. I didn't have time for dinner, so I grabbed a Nutragrain bar and got back into the car with just enough time to get to the movie theater. Except it was snowing harder and, as I headed out of my development my brakes failed. I had to steer the car to the side and the brakes finally engaged. Then I skidded when taking a turn and as I went around a car accident, my brakes went out again for a couple seconds. Terrifying. I decided I should have stayed home--look at all the signs of fate trying to keep me home! So I took its advice and headed home. Brakes wouldn't work about half the time, but I finally got home safe and sound but thoroughly shaken up.

I don't know why I didn't listen to my instincts/the signs and stay home. I'm such an idiot!

Now I have to figure out what to do about the car. Is the problem going to happen again? DO I try to drive it to the shop or do I have it towed? How do I get to work? Ugh.

Glad to hear you're safe! The number of accidents on the roads tonight is INSANE. Somebody posted a screenshot from Google traffic and I didn't believe it until I looked myself. I hope your brakes aren't having issues. What happens when you press them? Do they jutter as if the anti-lock brakes are coming on, or did the pedal just go straight to the floor without any resistance? Scary either way. Might want to give somebody a call to ask if they want to take a look or if they think it was something to do with the weather and road conditions.

I'm a stupidhead for thinking I could go out and be fine. The roads were untouched and everyone was sliding about.

My brakes shudder and make a loud sound and it's like something's trying to push up against my foot. Is that the anti-lock brakes trying and failing to engage? It's happened a couple times before, but never 10+ times in one night. I was planning on calling my garage; they open at 7am tomorrow.

I'm no car expert, but that sounds like what happens when my antilock brakes kick in. I was taught to very gently pump the brakes when that happens. It's terrifying because it feels like the brakes aren't working properly, but they're actually doing what they're supposed to. But like I said, I'm no expert, so calling the garage is probably a good idea.

YES! If I gently pushed on them, then it would work! It would just take more time, so I had to leave a ton of space/time to stop. You're more of a car expert than I am. I'll still call the shop, though, just in case. But that sounds like it EXACTLY. Thanks!

I didn't! I called and described the problem and he said you were absolutely right, that it was the ABS and that last night road conditions were so bad that the antilock breaks where trying to work and keep the wheels from locking, but there was nothing for them to grip onto. So my car is perfectly fine and you are a genius :-)

In other news, I finally saw the Martian in theaters tonight. No one warned me about the presence of the song "Starman" right in the middle and I absolutely lost it, sobbing to suddenly and unexpectedly be hearing David Bowie singing. That movie must have an excellent soundtrack. I half wished I were watching it at home and not in a theater so that I could sing along (or dance along to the Abba).

Alas, I saw the movie before Bowie's passing, so I didn't think to warn you. But how did you like it otherwise?
