It's been a loooooong time!
Aug. 20th, 2016 11:14 pmIt's been so long since I last checked in here, I hardly know where to start. So I'm-a-gonna just start listing things:
1. Went to watch my first roller derby bout today. Was even more enjoyable than I thought it would be. Took me a while to get the hang of it, but by the end I think I got it. Those girls are fierce! I would definitely go again. Also, now, I totally need to make a character a derby girl.
2. Been planning my friend's bachelorette party with two friends. We've got a lot of fun and atypical things planned that, I hope, the bride-to-be will enjoy! The whole thing is going to be a big game (she likes games) and she earns points by doing different tasks and completing mini games. I even made special, personalized role cards to give her additional points/abilities during the game. And there will also be activities we know she likes to do with us--like releasing BookCrossing books and snarfing historical markers. We're also doing a painting course in the evening, whiere I am sure I will be terrible but have fun anyway. That's less than a week away now! Yikes! But I am pretty much done with my portion of the prep/planning. I just need to clean my house in case we end up using it for something (and also because I really need to clean it).
3. Went to Brickfair (local LEGO convention) for my 9th year! I had a lot of fun, but also some rocky times. I displayed in the America 1776 collab, which should have been AWESOME because I'm a tad obsessed with that era. But some drunk teenagers destroyed my MOC the night before public hours and I had to stay there until 1am fixing it. And then when I went to pick up my MOCs, one of my trees was taken apart and the trunk stolen. WTF? So, yeah, I'm not going to be doing that collab again. And I wish I had set up my Neko Atsume MOC near where I was sitting with my habitats, so I could have heard comments about it. But Habitats went really well this year. And I got to geek out and squee with people about Narnia, Harry Potter, Supernatural, Eeyore, and Hamilton!!!!!!! One of my friends called my display "Habitats of Feels" because I had scenes like Eliza writing herself out of the narrative, Burr about to shoot Hamilton (with dramatic lighting!), Dean holding baby Sammy as their house burns down behind them, and Aslan dead on the stone table. Lots of feels.
4. Next year, I have been challenged to build some naughty habitats for display during Adult swim. Time to bring back the LEGO glory hole scene I made for LMOM on pervy_werewolf years ago!
5. I participated in GISHWHES for my first time. Don't know what I was thinking, doing it this year (when I had NO free time and was up until 4am some nights working on things, then up by 7am to get to work on time). But it was definitely fun. I bounced in my very first moon bounce EVER. I got decorated like a package and mailed at the post office, I drew Jensen on a Skittle, I had hundreds of people sign LEGO-themed birthday cards for an autistic boy in California, and I made some people happy (including giving a friend an entire set of Harry Potter books). It was CRAZY but fun. Definitely fun. And it was neat working with people from all around the world on something so crazy and fun.
6. I went to CON.TXT FINALLY. I learned about it about 10 years ago, but I was always nervous about going. After going to Wincon last year, I realized how much FUN it is to be around people like me. And I'm SO GLAD I went. There were lots of great panels--Stormpilot, Supernatural DIY, tea appreciation, 3-somes and more-somes, how to write multi-person sex scenes, Check Please appreciation, asexuality in fandom, and another DIY: a Hamilton sing-along. The only person in the room who wrapped "Guns & Ships" without making a mistake? That was me! And they all clapped for me. #5secondsoffame It was also nice seeing some familiar faces--someone from the Master_Apprentice Yahoo group (who I met in person years ago) was the first person I saw when we were walking into the welcome session on the first day, and someone from my Harry Potter meetup group was in the Check, Please panel on the last day! There were also two kickass vid shows, a raffle (I won nothing), a swap table, and some merch tables. I ended up buying a couple Christmas presents, a Hawkeye sticker, a Stargate SG-1 Christmas tree ornament, Slash: the boardgame (OMG I cannot wait to play this), a Harry Potter chess set, a Fantastic Four TPB, some Harry Potter magnets, a few POPs (Mal and Rey) and some Quidditch post-it-notes. I definitely had a wonderful time... and I've already purchased my registration for 2018. The date hasn't been announced yet, so I hope it isn't the same weekend as Brickfair.
7. I just finished watching The Get Down on Netflix. I know it's a little divisive, but as a young white woman who wasn't alive at this point in history, I loved it. The characters were great. Baz' signature camp and camera work made me instantly comfortable. And now I can't believe I have to wait until next year for more!!! I got two DVDs out of the library a few weeks ago, and am watching them tonight: The Watsons Go to Birmingham (I read the book last year) and Paper Towns (finally). Turns out, STRANGELY, that one of the main characters in The Get Down is The Watsons go to Birmingham. And it turns out that THE main character in The Get Down is Radar in Paper Towns. What are the odds? Super cool to see both the actors again so soon, in much different roles. I also started watching Sanctuary. Friends are going to try to remember to lend me the DVDs, so for now I have to get them through Netflix one DVD at a time.
8. Work is starting to become a problem. I don't want to give up on my projects there, but I can already tell that things are going way downhill pretty quickly and all the smart people are bailing out now as soon as they can. And that's making it tough for the rest of us to do our work. And there's something happening in September that is going to be very not good on social media; I can see it already. Not looking forward to that!
9. Things should quiet down for me a little after this weekend. Am looking forward to that. This weekend I need to clean and work on swaps! I'm behind on book reviews (like, maybe 15 books behind--oops!). And I'm working on a Poe fic right now that I'm struggling with. I am liking it, but the end scene (which is my favorite) is very out of place, given how I did the rest of the fic. So I don't know what to do to save it right now. I could rewrite it with a different format and see if that helps it. Or I can just make the final part an epilogue. Haven't decided yet.
10. Went to The Cursed Child book reliease party with friends (had to leave the con to do it, but I'm glad I did, because the party was fun!). I got a Hufflepuff magnet out of it and also bought the Hamiltome with the discount coupon, so it was only, like, $20! I have only begun to read The Cursed Child, so please no spoilers! Most of my friends hated it, so I'll probably be the only one who likes it. LOL Guess we'll find out.
11. Hope y'all are doing well!
