Pirates Fic posted
Jul. 19th, 2003 04:25 amJust posted my Pirates of the Caribbean story on sneezefic. It's just a short little thing- and I spent more time with research than in writing (which probably shows). And there probably isn't as much sneezing as there could be... but I wanted something light and not entirely too miserable for Will. Everything always seems to go wrong for the lad... didn't want to make it too bad for him.
Anyhoo... enjoy :-) I've got SO many fics in the works, it was nice to get a small, quick one out. And it's always fun to play with new characters and a new universe :-)

POTC fic.
Date: 2003-07-19 11:35 am (UTC)Poor sweet, sick, sneezy Will. He needs a hug! You did a wonderful job of portraying how awkward he must feel during this part of the voyage. He doesn't know much about sailing, and the other pirates probably see him as some naive kid tagging along and getting in their way, and now he's sick and probably confirming their expectations that he's weak and useless. I really liked how you mixed so much of his confusion about his father's true occupation, his concern for Elizabeth, and the flashbacks to the shipwreck that led him to her, and put them all together in one big fever dream. Also, great descriptions of the storm and the cold and wetness...it made me want to climb into the bunk with Will and warm up his poor chilly body *big grin*
I was very impressed with your characterization of Jack! It had to be hard to get that perfect balance of competant captain and drunken lunatic, but I think you did a great job with that. I'm starting to have a harder time seeing Jack/Will slash, since I'm really getting fond of a more father/son or big brother/little brother relationship for them. (Not that a father/son type relationship has stopped slash before though..notably Qui/Obi *G*) But anyway, I love how Jack is all protective of Will. Very, very adorable.
I took a look at the link for the ship's specs and pictures of the cabin layouts and I can totally see how you used that. I could definitely picture it in my mind while reading. I also totally agree with you about where Will would sleep, and the logic of Anamaria getting the other private room. Besides, if you give Will a private room, then no one will see him and pity him when he's sniffling and sneezing all night ;)
I could go on and on, but this post is getting huge already. I did notice a few typos, mostly things a spellchecker wouldn't have caught. They're very minor, but I can point them out for you if you like. Other than that, well done! I hope that you keep writing fics about Will, so long as you don't forget about Legolas, that is!

Date: 2003-07-19 12:12 pm (UTC)OK, starting again...
Please point out errors! I only ran through it once editing... at 4am... while watching a DVD with commentary on from 5 people... so I was very distracted. I'm sure I'll hit my head on the wall from stupidity, but better to have them fixed :-) Thanks :-)
And thank you for such quick feedback! The list is usually very quiet on weekends- not to mention that a lot of people are out of town- so I wasn't expecting much in the way of feedback for a while. So this was a pleasant surprise! Thanks!
Will- I'm not sure about him in the movie... he doesn't seem to have a lot of depth to him, though does seem to have a lot of characteristics and angst and unluckiness. So I wasn't really sure I did a good job of him in the fic... I just kept feeling like there wasn't much to deal with, which is probably why I kept brining up the angst-inspiring issues.
I had no problem envisioning his sneezing, though. ANd would gladly have jumped in his bunk with him too *G* Poor little Will! I've always had a thing for blacksmiths... tough hands... sensitive hearts... maybe it's left over from 'Great Expectations', I don't know :-)
I imagined the same, about the crew's reaction to him... I wish I'd maybe gotten out of WIll's POV for a while to show that... or have him overhear more laughing or discussion of him. But I figured that would be a bit too much to cram into such a short piece. Maybe next time.
The dream- I am still not happy with it. I must have rewritten it at least thirty times in my head, trying to figure out what I wanted it to explain and show and trying to get it to do that. I still don't know about it. But you seem to have gotten from it what I wanted people to get out of it... so maybe it doesn't suck as much as I think it does.
Jack- I adore writing Jack's character! I had such a fun time- I really can't imagine wanting to write a PotC fic without him now! Several times I'd write a line and his actions would just pop into my head, all flowing and silly and... he's a really fun character. Glad you liked the balance!
Jack/Will- I can't really see slash it either. It didn't actually occur to me to slash the two until I saw some LJ icons and posts about it... I just didn't see it when I watched the movies. It's like slashing Luke/Obi-Wan... or Harry/Remus... I can see them as very good friends or brothers (maybe even closer than big bro/little bro by the end of the movie) but I honestly wouldn't want to make them lovers. But that's just me. I'd certainly read the fics... I just don't really see it for myself. Their relationship just seems a lot different to me.
Rooms- heehee! You're so right! No way would Will get his own room *G* Notice I even go as far as to set him down on the deck the next morning- when clearly he should still be in bed- but no one gets to watch him try and be noble and hide how he feels when he's back in bed *G* I sort of feel sorry that I gave Mr.Gibbs' cabin away... but I picture him to be the sort who flops down on a mattress (or a pig) and falls asleep in five seconds. I don't think he'd mind.
Mmmmmm Obi/Qui... you had to remind me, right? lol *has terrible urge to pick up her four last unfinished SW stories*
Thanks again! Above all, I'm glad you liked it! I can be so slow with fics that by the time I post, everyone's past any desire to read the fic. LOL So I'm glad my timing was a little better with this one! Thanks!
Re:
Date: 2003-07-19 08:04 pm (UTC)Glad you liked the characters! Themes and lack of plot aside... honestly showing the characters was really what I was going for. I'm glad they seemed real to you. Glad you liked Will *G* Because he's the star of the sneezefic and all. I totally just wanted to cuddle him the whole way through, especially when he sneezed. *G* And glad you liked Jack's humor- I found it tremendously easy to write parts with him, despite not doing humor well myself.
Dream sequence- really? I'm still not sure I'm happy with it. I spent about 2 or 3 days thinking it over before I finally just buckled down and wrote it. Gah. Clever is good, though. Maybe I'm just being too critical. I was trying to capture some of that fantastic sweeping imagery that they did so well in the movie... *shrug* I am glad you thought it didn't suck, though!
Research-wise, it's really not all too bad... I really enjoy research for fics because it gives me great ideas about them. Though there were a few things that took me a long time... like figuring out what the quarter deck was called.
Drunken Sailor- I've always loved that song. There's something like 30 accepted verses and another 20 I've heard from random artists... I've got 5 versions by different groups on my comp right now :-) I'm a huge sea shanty fan, so it was hard not to include a few... I'm thinking possibly of a songfic (ack! I dreaded songfic!) but making up the verses to fit Jack or Will or whatever's happening in the story at the time... we'll see.
As for gayness... I dunno. I knew going in that he was supposed to be rather inebriated all the time, so I just took it as that. Having been around a number of straight drunk guys, I had no problem believing he was drunk. Honestly, until someone mentioned it on sneezefic it didn't occur to me. I still don't really see it(though I can understand that drunkedness and flamboyance could resemble each other). But Jack's just... unique!
Anyhoo... thank you for all the feedback! Three posts... wow... *G* Inflate my ego a little more, why don't you? LOL!
Re:
Date: 2003-07-19 08:29 pm (UTC)Anyway, can't wait to read your fic! The more the merrier where WIP are concerned! LOL
And thanks again *blushing* :-) I still find it funny that we were all so timid about approaching you for so long after reading your sneezing-related works on ff.net LOL Your stories really are fantastic though!
Love it, Love it, Love it....
Date: 2003-07-19 04:02 pm (UTC)Re: Love it, Love it, Love it....
Date: 2003-07-19 08:23 pm (UTC)ANd HUGE congrats to you for seeing it alone! I've only been to the movies alone once... I was scared :-) So that's a huge deal to me! Go BVB!!! Glad you had a great time... I have to admit, I really love Orlando's look no matter what... but the Legolas look really got to me a lot more than, say, the mohawk. But after Pirates I must admit I, too, adore the actor without the wig just as much. THere's just something so gentle and unique about his acting style- the way he moves, the way he delivers lines- that's just so delicious. And dark-haired Orlando... man, I loved him at the end there all cleaned up and in that hat. Yum!!!
OK, so story- yay! I'm so glad you liked it! Jack was SO much fun to write- and I thought he would be the hard part, too! I had much more trouble with Will... maybe because I had to integrate the sneezes in there as well? I dunno.
I really liked Depp in Sleepy Hollow and From Hell(have both on DVD)... that pale, dark, brooding and being observant look is very yummy. But sexy- yeah, for sexy definitely this movie! Not really sure I can see WIll/Jack slash... but then again, I'm a huge fan of Legolas/Gimli and never thought I could see that either. So who knows?
