Cassie Cat Update
Sep. 9th, 2016 10:18 pmI went to visit Cassie at the emergency vet tonight. She lifted her little head up when she heard my voice and I got to pet her and rub her chin, which is her favorite. Last night around 11, her heart stopped and they had to do CPR on her to restart it. Then she had two blood transfusions. By 3am, she was still hanging in there--not quite stable, but out of the woods for the most part. This morning, she was stable enough for an ultrasound. Looks like there's something going on in her small intestine. It could be ulcers that are causing her internal bleeding or it could be cancer. No way to tell which without a biopsy, which would require putting her under, and she isn't strong enough for that. So after many calls to my vet and the internal medicine doctor, I made the call to start her on a moderate dose of steroids. If it's an ulcer, the steroids will help with that. If it's lymphoma, the steroids will help for a while (several years) until the cancer gets bad enough. She's putting me through the wringer emotionally; I don't think I've cried this much in years. But she's in an oxygen tank with a heated pad beneath her. She looks comfortable. She's doing as well as can be expected at the moment. So I'm definitely happy about that. A little less happy about the bill, but somehow I'll make it work. I had to put down a $4,000 deposit for the estimate, but it will likely be double that by the end. She might be able to come home on Sunday! That seems impossible to me, considering the state she's in now, but they seemed optimistic. So I guess I will be also.
I managed to get a little bit of sleep off and on today while waiting for phone calls about her status. And my whole face is swolen and puffy from so much crying. But her Charlie Sister Cat has been keeping me good company all day long.
