*sniffles*
Jul. 20th, 2003 02:38 pmParents just came and took my old van away. They're attempting to drive it home on the interstate... but they're taking 2 cars so if the van breaks down while Mom's driving, Dad will be there to be sure it gets taken care of (they don't have cell phones, we're an old fashioned family)
Sooooo sad to see the van go! I'm, like, crying! It's been so loyal and sweet... er, aside from the door falling off in my hands. It made it across country and back, coast-to-coast, so many times *sniffles* I took photos. Man... I'm going to miss it! My sweet old van *sniffles*

Date: 2003-07-20 02:05 pm (UTC)But we don't have to parallel park for our road test. The road test was a heck of a lot easier than driving with my mother, and MUCH easier than taking behind the wheel(which I didn't have to take because of my age, I just wanted the experience of driving with an instructor). My road test was a lot easier than I thought it would be, thank goodness. I would be dead if I'd had to parallel park back then, though! I can do it, but not under pressure... and sometimes it takes me a few tries to get in and close enough to the curb.
My new car- well, she didn't let me have it, parents sold it to me for $4,500- so I've got another loan to deal with now. It's a silver Honda Civic, 2-door, 1996 (so better than an '89 minivan!) It's an EX model and has all those nifty features like a sun roof and stuff. My biggest challenge is remembering to drive with my hands at the bottom of the steering wheel- I've never had a car with air bags before. It's taking some getting used to.
The van just got $725 work on it, so the door and window are fine now, and it looks a lot better. Parents are giving it to my sister to drive to school and back to build up her responsibility(which, er, needs to happen). So it's still in the family for a while yet.

Date: 2003-07-20 03:05 pm (UTC)I don't know much about cars either... and I don't really care how they work as long as they run all right. THough my new car does look very pretty. :-)
Yeah, you've mentioned a number of times that you're in PA. It's beautiful up there. My parents want to retire on a farm in PA many years from now. My boyfriend is from Harisburg PA and spent some childhood in Philly.
UG! UVA is my rival college! *grrrr!* I hate it with a passion! *growl!* My two best friends went there, though. When I got the car from my friend, I did a ceremonial removal of the UVA sticker from the back window *G* heehee Then stomped on it. My mother took pictures... twas her idea to stomp- she went to UVA for undergrad, hated it, dropped out, and finished up at Michigan :-) There's a nice healthy tradition of hating that school in my family now *G*
But yeah, I live in VA. I grew up in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington D.C.(so don't go thinking I'm a southern hick or something! lol!) Lived in VA most of my life. But the conservativeness is really starting to get to me... I really need to move somewhere liberal... away from all the racism and religious nuts you get in southern VA, especially. But I suppose it could be worse. I could be living in Georgia or Alabama or something.

Date: 2003-07-20 03:29 pm (UTC)I go to Virginia Tech (or, if you like, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University), former home of Michael Vick, the football player, and a whole host of other famous people no one's really ever heard of LOL(ex-ever see the movie October Skies? Homer went to VT). UVA and VT are HUGE rivals. But that's because they're stuck up snobs who need to put down somebody to make themselves feel better ;-) We're the normal ones :-) Just two different worlds, you know? And I don't fit into theirs at all(and frankly I don't have that kind of money!) I went to VT because it's more technical, and has a much better computer science department(which was my major). VT was also the only state school in VA with a minor in Creative Writing. So it was an easy choice for me :-)
But both my best friends went there, so there's constant rivalry among us whenever anyone mentions out colleges :-) They constantly insult my school's mascot... but again, I don't mind because their school sucks and they just have to put us down to feel better about themselves! heehee!
Ohh, I've heard of West Chester. Hope it's a lot of fun now and in a year when you go full-time. And it's nice that it's so nearby and in a great location. :-)

Date: 2003-07-20 01:42 pm (UTC)*sigh* Yeah. I've been through a lot with that car. We've had it for 14 years now. And it's still in the family... it's just different because it was all mine for 2 years and now it's 5 hours away and I won't get to see it every day any more. Man. I lived out of that thing at times. It was a really good car.
I'm sure I'll get attached to my new car... it's just different because it used to be my best friend's. Still doesn't really feel like *mine* yet you know?
Poor You!
Date: 2003-07-20 03:56 pm (UTC)I know this is completely off topic, but seeing as you're alot more computer literate than Dani or I, we were wondering how we make the 'picture thing'[now there's a technical term] beside our username....sorry to put this in your car thread...we just didn't know who else to ask...I hope this is alright...
Thank you!

Re: Poor You!
Date: 2003-07-20 04:06 pm (UTC)In computer terms, the picture is called an 'Avatar'(which is the general name for an online picture that represents a person). In LJ terms I think they call it a user icon or a user picture. There are tons of communities out there that make pictures you can use on your LJ.
If you want to make one yourself, I would suggest getting a paint program such as Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Paint/Photo Shop. (Most any paint program you can download for a free trial if you don't already have one). There are specifications:
-File size must be less than 40k
-Image dimensions must be no larger than 100x100 pixels
-File format must be either PNG, GIF or JPG
So if you're making it from scratch, open up a new picture that is 100x100 in size, draw, save as a gif or jpg, upload using the 'Your Pictures' tab in the LJ side menu, and you're good to go.
If there's a picture you want to base it off of, you might need to crop (cut) it down and/or resize the whole picture to the proper size. You could add text, etc. Then save as a gif or jpg, upload, and you're good.
For animation, make several of these (best to save as gif) then get a program such as Animation Shop (should come with Paint Shop in the free trial sownload) and string them together. Save as a gif. Upload. You get the drill. I'd be more than happy to give more details and step you through the process as needed if you have any problems!
As for the car- awww! I never named mine... I can never really get that to work for me. I must have tried naming my computer so many times... nothing stucks. Nermal calls hers Obi-comp... even when I try something cute like that it never sticks for me. LOL
Nova Scotia? I've always wanted to visit there *deep sigh*
And yay! Glad you saw pirates again! I really enjoyed it the second time around just as much. Just one of those things. And the visuals are breathtaking! Especially the guys... lol!
