Hiya! I started writing this on Tuesday morning... which makes #5 kind of funny now, in retrospect.

Things in my world...

1. Did I mention I have a new kitten? Her name is Ozma. Thought she was a boy for the first few weeks I had her (the fact that she humped my other cat was pretty telling; also, her previous owners had her checked out at their vet and that vet put "male" down on the chart.) So her name went from Cream Cheese to Turner (which I picked because the white on her belly looks like an hour glass/time turner) to Ozma. In L. Frank Baum's Oz series, my favorite character is Tip, a boy, who ends up being Princess Ozma in magical disguise. So it seemed fitting. Also, it fits in all right with existing cat Charlie (as SPN Charlie went to Oz). She just got fixed last Tuesday and she's not supposed to be running around or playing, but she has SO MUCH ENERGY! I have to keep her in my craft room, separated from Charlie, because the two attack each other. Ozma wants to play and Charlie thinks that play is fighting and Ozma doesn't realize Charlie's hiss and growl and swat means "stop it." Ozma never really learned how to play or read other cat signals, so she is having a hard time adjusting and Charlie is super stressed out.

2. I went to Tampa for a few days for work. Had lunch at an Italian/Sushi restaurant. I don't know how that's possible, but I had two kinds of sushi and then pumpkin pie gelato for dessert. Delicious. I'm not complaining.

3. NaNoWriMo this month. I've been barely able to keep my head above water. I got little written on the trip and even less written last week. So any lead I had quickly evaporated.

4. I'm devastated about the election. Looking into ways to keep the people I love safe. I keep bounding back and forth between the belief that he's not going to get anything done to the belief that he's going to cause a global nuclear winter. And I keep going back and forth between being angry with people in my country to being angry with myself for not realizing just how many pissed off and desperate people there were in my country. I'm mostly just terrified for my community and my friends. If you're thinking about getting an abortion, better do it now while you still can, people! I've been leaving some #unitedandkind post-it notes around town, trying to brighten people's days. We could all use it lately. Totally 100% [livejournal.com profile] cowboyguy's idea. So far, a few have been found!

5. Saturday afternoon, I started feeling really bad. I won't go into details, but I thought it was just gas. Although I've never had gas that made me have the chills for 4 hours straight. But it probably was just period-related gas or maybe food poisoning. But now that's passed and my body's still really not good and there's a strong pain in the lower right of my abdomen. Went to urgent care this morning and the doctor there reassured me that my appendix wasn't bursting. But it might be that my appendix is having trouble, or it could be my colon or any number of things in that area. So I'm going for an ultrasound in a few hours. Which means I'm hungry and thirsty and can't eat or drink anything, so I'm a little pissed off as well from lack of blood sugar.

6. Still mainlining Arrow & Flash on Netflix. I still need to write a blog post about that. On my DVR, I finished watching Murder in the First season 2 (I have such love for Taye Diggs). Started watching Secrets and Lies season 2 last night. So far so good, but I'd like it better if I liked the detective even a little bit. She's such a hardass.

7. Earreading the second YA Diviners book called Lair of Dreams right now in my car. Hit disc 11, track 12 and absolutely died. Male reporter character has a cold and sneezes a bunch of times. But then one time he's talking and about to sneeze and the woman reading it puts that desperate "I'm about to sneeze" tone in his voice for a whole sentence and then actually makes the sound of him sneezing. And it's pretty darn good. Just about died while driving. OMG And while I'm on this topic, [livejournal.com profile] ladykorana shared this with me yesterday (Jared sneezes around the 3:15 mark). I hadn't seen it before. Guuuhhh. Could JJ be more adorable? No. No they couldn't. Also, adorable gay boy on Arrow has a cold and sneezes a whole bunch in Season 4, Episode 17. So that was beautiful to watch. And then rewatch.

8. I finally up and joined sneezefurs. For the art and stories. Please don't judge. And I might be writing some stories. Because that's how I roll. Gods, my fetish is weird. But joining that community is going to have to be a separate post/rant because I got the weirdest welcome ever, so I feel really uncomfortable playing there. I still don't particularly like the blue forum either. But I love my LJ and you guys *hugs* Thank you for not being weird or mean.

9. Last month I spend a weekend doing a stay at home writer's retreat. I basically spent a whole weekend focusing on my writing. And while I was driving back from taking care of [livejournal.com profile] melydia's kitties, I thought up this great idea for a project I'm going to do next year. I spent the rest of October working on it, and I'm feeling good about it. Anyone know of any SF artists who are taking commissions or would want to draw something for me for free? I'll probably end up posting on the blue forum, but just thought I'd ask in case anyone here knows of anybody. I asked my favorite artist and she's definitely not taking commissions just now. Technically this project isn't going to happen until next fall anyway, so it's possible she'll have a slot open up. But if she doesn't, I want to be prepared. And there are lots of good artists out there, right?

10. Work is still uncertain. Looks like we might be moving in March now. Nothing is finalized yet. Nothing's been signed. But we're getting kicked out of our building in April unless something happens. So something's gotta happen soon. And considering I work for an arts nonprofit organization, these next 4 years are going to be terrifying financially as well. I can only imagine what sorts of cuts the NEA is going to have to make now, and our NEA grant funds my department.

7. I feel like I've been waiting for that Jared vid for years! (I feel like this makes me a very weird person.) But... the floppy hair! Oh, man, that was adorable, even if you couldn't actually hear him sneeze. Thanks for sharing!

10. Hope the work stuff gets... well, worked out soon. Are you thinking you're going to stay with them, or are there thoughts about trying to find something with a different organization?

Yay for the new fur-baby! Cute name!

Eowyn has been diagnosed with feline hyperthyroidism. She's 13 now, which is apparently the most common age for cats to get diagnosed. She got picky over food, and she started pulling tufts of hair out when she groomed herself because itchy skin is a symptom too. I took her in when I noticed the two thin patches of hair on her back on either side of her spine, and they drew labs and found the wacky thyroid levels.

She's been on a topical methimazole cream rubbed on the skin inside her ears twice daily for a month now. It suppresses the thyroid function. The vet is going to recheck thyroid levels and do a bunch of other labs on Monday to see where we are at and make sure she has no other conditions the hyperthyroidism was masking. End goal is to shoot for a total cure using radioactive iodine, so she won't need any meds. Very pricy, and they have to keep her for 2-3 days while she's too radioactive to have home, but there is about a 98% success rate. Which is good because otherwise I'd have to board her every time I leave town so she gets her meds. Fun.

Thanks. I think we lucked out in that she lacked one of the major dangerous symptoms, which is eating way more than usual and still losing a ton of weight. She's only lost a little bit, I think, and she's eating around the same amount as before, she just strongly prefers wet food now, where I gave her almost exclusively dry for most of her life.

Update: Eowyn is scheduled to have the radioactive iodine treatment on December 12 at a Radiocat facility (love the name)! She's had 2 blood levels for T4 so far and needs one more clean one in a week since i was told to take her off the thyroid suppressing meds in preparation for the procedure. It will let them calculate the dose of radiation needed.
Also, when they did preparatory testing, they found out she has a UTI, so she got a shot of antibiotics for that too. She definitely freaked out much more having to go back to the vet a second time in the same week.

She'll be in the Radiocat facility for 3 days, until radiation levels have dropped enough that I'm legally allowed to take her home. I have to use flushable litter for 2 weeks afterwards and then dispose of the litter pan, so I'll have to buy those. She's allowed to have a couple personal items while she's boarding but those have to be destroyed too due to radioactivity. I'm thinking of wearing a ratty t-shirt I want to toss, and letting her have that so it smells like me while she's there.

The really hard part is that she's not allowed to sleep with me or on my bed for 2 weeks afterwards. They told me casual contact is ok, it's like standing by a microwave, but we're not meant to actually sleep pressed against one for 8 hrs, lol.
