Crossovers
Aug. 17th, 2003 06:58 amI have SUCH a hard time writing serious cross-overs. I never know how to combine two drastically different universes so that it makes sense. I'm VERY stuck in canon when I write- I don't like going against established details and things.
Nonetheless, I just wrote a lovely Harry Potter/Wolf's Rain crossover where Remus and Tsume hook up. I think it's set in the HP timeline sometime between Harry's birth and his third year (though it could possibly be set after book 5, but I wouldn't want Remus to feel quite that sad then). And it's set in the Wolf's Rain timeline years before the series ever starts. I sort of had to make up the idea that the wolves in Wolf's Rain have MUCH longer lifespans... like, hundreds of years or something. I know I shouldn't worry so much about fitting into details and things as it's only fanfic... but I really like when things work out logically and I hard a hard time here.
Anyway... I enjoyed writing it. Even worked a sneeze in (poor Tsume, out in the cold snow, heehee!) though it's mainly angst and yummy hurt/comfort. And wolf sex. LOL I guess you could say there's off camera beastiality... but there's graphic wolf-on-werewolf action right from the beginning. Man... I almost want to be a wolf just to have fun mating like them. I mean, the male's in the female for a half an hour most times! You've GOT to love when nature does fun things like that *G*
And this was my first experience slashing Remus with someone other than Sirius. Which was weird. I dunno that I like that... but assuming this takes place when Sirius is still in Azkaban, Remus has that hating, untrusting mindset towards his mate, and it makes my story beautifully angst-filled. *G* Happy happy!
Now, if only I could get my e-mail... I don't know WHAT is wrong with it! *worried*

Pfft. Says who? Maybe it's just 'cause I'm a canon whore, but when things are believable according to canon, it makes the story much more enjoyable. To me, anyway. More like an extension of the story itself rather than something that's coming out of left field. Nice and comfortable slip into something. Not to say I don't like AUs, but I canon will always have a place in my heart first and foremost.

Date: 2003-08-18 11:34 pm (UTC)And exactly! *hugs* As for canon, for as much slash as I write you think I'd be over it, but I really have a hard time writing and reading things that are AU. Especially extreme AU. I just tried to read a VERY AU HP story about 10 minutes ago and gave up after a few lines (basically, no magic and the characters were movie stars...) I'm sure it was an excellent story... my mind just has problems if it can't logically fit stories into canon some way or another. Not that it always HAS to fit... but I enjoy it more if my mind isn't shouting "Yes, but there's no time in that timeline to allow for X" or "why the heck are they bringing this up? It's contridicting Y from Book Z" Just like you said, I prefer it when it's an extension of the stories.
Maybe I'm just not the type who's supposed to be writing crossovers *G* In my Remus/Tsume one I give absolutely no explanation about how Tsume gets to England(what, 200, 300 years before he's even supposed to be alive?) Gah... it bugs the heck out of me but not explaining was the only way I could get it to work outin my head.

Date: 2003-09-02 01:38 pm (UTC)It's hard to sort of ease into something like an extreme AU, take something you know and love and completely turn it on it's head. I think that's why you see a lot of those types of stories as humour - that gets to be your buffer, so you have the leeway to make all sorts of discrepancies and not really care about it. If that makes sense. So very true, it's easier to enjoy when you're not searching for plotholes at every turn. Going with the natural flow of the original storyline keeps it in a sort of comfort zone.
One thing that's great about HP though is that there's magic, so you can make things up, elements that could potentially help Remus go back in time, etc, are already there so it's a lot easier (in some ways) than a fandom that's not based in fantasy. Maybe the story was just meant to be enjoyed, by reading or writing, and not bothered too much about? There's a lot of fic that can just be fun and kind of screw the rest, you know? ;)

Date: 2003-09-02 06:28 pm (UTC)LMAO! I dunno... I like Lilly and James..... and Albus and Minerva... *G*
I do like Snape, too... I can't bloody figure him out... but I do like him. And after OotP I feel SO sorry for him on top of that. But yes... ambiguous villans are certainly a lot of fun... sometimes nonambiguous ones aren't too bad either *G*
I love to read about them with flaws, and stubborness and stupidity. Even if they were in love and he wouldn't take him back? Brilliant.
That, to my eyes, would be tantimount(sp?) to absolute betrayal as far as my Sirius is concerned. I really just can't see him wanting to bed Remus, knowing he's been touched and taken by Snape... though I suppose if Remus doesn't tell him (like in sharondownonthefarm's Hair of the Dog sneezefic) then I can see it. I can certainly see Snape/Remus a heck of a lot better than Snape/any-other-good-guy

Oh, you're SO right there!!! And since I don't write a lot of humor, I suppose that's why I'm having trouble... no buffers... apart from a tone that screams "I don't want to explain, so you're not going to get one"

That is very true. But there are so many restrictions on that as well... and I suppose I still look at things too realistically. I need to focus more on that childhood creativity of mine I lost long ago and look at stories from that perpective again, methinks.
Anyway... I'm still working up the courage to post the AU story anywhere(it's not a sneezefic... though technically one of the characters does sneeze when he comes in from the cold, and it is largely hurt/comfort... but I doubt sneezefetishists of a normal variety would wish to read it) I suppose if I ever do post it, I'll let feedback dictate if it's okay or not... if people start complaining that there are too many unanswered questions that the story isn't enjoyable, I suppose I'll know :-)
