Velvet Goldmine
Sep. 21st, 2003 04:46 amSo I watched Velvet Goldmine on Bravo twice tonight... only bits and pieces the second time- I didn't realize they were repeating it again but was happy to see it and boyfriend even sat through about 10 minutes of it before going to bed. Poor baby. I wore him out. LOL But I got home in time to catch the big Brian/Curt musical number and, of course, the kiss.
I only watched parts of it earlier tonight, too, as I was in the other room. But I was reciting it along with the movie most of the way through *G* Gods, I love that movie.
Anyway, I wasn't surprised to see they cut the nudity out :-( (Speaking of which, I have a whole other rant about Young Adam and them cutting the nudity out of that just for US viewers- WHAT THE FUCK? As though we're not adults and can't handle some nudity but we can handle people blowing up and guts ripped out?!) Anyway, I was walking over to put away bread when I caught the 'Unclean' recording session and suddenly I race out of the kitchen. It's not Ewan's voice. I don't know whose it was, but some guy was talking in Ewan's place. Instead of beeping out the swear words or substituting a single word, someone was saying MULTIPLE lines of his. Then he got to the all-out swearing and you see Ewan jumping up and down while some guy's calling out "Moron! Idiot! Forget you!" Oh my gods... WHY do they do this to good movies?!!!! It's art...it's expression... damnit, the whole friggin movie's about expression of art and morality and showing off and they not only cut out nudity and language but re-record a whole series of lines so there's no swearing. Irony of ironies.
*sigh* Think I might have to watch the real version tomorrow to make myself feel better.
Ug. I'm totally writing to the studios about Young Adam, though. And then I'm moving to Sweden or somewhere where they don't mind realism in the form of nudity and sex but don't like violence. I love a quote from Ewan about it though "They are cutting me off in America. You can blow thousands of people's heads off with a machine gun but you can't show a picture of my willy. I believe they're cutting the scene out.... In the States, they are a bit worried about seeing my old chap... I think it is a really good and important film. I have always thought that film should reflect life. I am nude all the time at home."
Oh dear gods. I want to be a fly on the wall of his house!!! :-) Ug. I'm VERY tired of entertainment execs controlling culture by thinking they know what's best. And that's another movie about art and expression and real life... and it's being censored. NOT comforting to me, as an "artist" *sigh*
I'm still amused, though. Wonder who that guy was who read all those lines to cover Ewan's voice? It was SO startling to me. Maybe I just watch so much NOT on network TV but I've never come across this before... whole sentences in a row, not just words. It's half amusing, half sickening. LOL

Down with censorship!
Date: 2003-09-21 12:32 pm (UTC)Voiceovers for Ewan's lovely voice? Argh! That's...that's...that's blasphemous!
"I have always thought that film should reflect life. I am nude all the time at home."
Oh. My. Ghod! *WIBBLE* (No, I hadn't heard that before...I ::heart:: Ewan...)
Re: Down with censorship!
Date: 2003-09-21 10:50 pm (UTC)I really don't understand why they have to cut things out of movies. That's what ratings are for!!! If we don't think we can handle to particular content of a movie(be it sex or violence or anything else), we don't watch it! I really think they don't give people enough credit. I can maybe understand editing for television since there's a chance people could stumble upon it unknowingly but even then it's a stretch for some things... but really, people slaved hard and long creating these works of art and it feels the same to me as going to an art gallery and covering up the nudity there. It's just wrong.
Yeah... didn't even sound remotely like Ewan... and had an American accent. As good looking as Ewan is, it's the voice that really get sme in the end *G* Those scenes were just painful for me (there were actually a few other moments later on as well where they did that with whole sentences... as though we wouldn't notice???!!) LOL
heehee *G* That Ewan quote... *sigh* What a guy :-) Was very happy when I read that in the article. He kills me, that man does :-)
