SF Challenge Question
Sep. 28th, 2003 07:58 pmI'm thinking of writing a story set sometime during one of the Chronicles of Narnia for sneezefic Challenge #1.
I've always wanted to write a CON story... but I'm not good with plots, so this would be an easy way of getting around that technicality LOL! Plus I wouldn't really want CON story I write to show up on Virtual Narnia- it's a great site, but the woman who runs it reviews every story personally and I think that's silly because half the time I don't agree with her assessments and half the time I think she's a little too harsh/restrictive in her rating system. It frightens me. And is unnecessary IMHO
Anyway, point is, I'm thinking of writing a story set during one of the CON books... I was originally thinking of a Peter-fic because I love Peter to death. But I watched The Silver Chair last night and now I'm thinking of a Eustace-fic. And I'm in the middle of Dawn Treader and think maybe an Edmund fic would be good. Ug. I can't decide. Anyway... if anyone actually knows the books and has any opinion, I'd welcome it. Thanks much!

Date: 2003-09-29 02:47 am (UTC)Anyway, it's good to know if I write it that there will be someone who's at least familiar with the series enough to *want* to read it :-)
Oh, don't get me wrong, I couldn't STAND Eustace, even after his dragon conversion I had a reallt hard time starting to like him.(I'm not that forgiving of idiots, but I blame it all on that terrible school of his, which didn't do good things to Ed either, as I recall) But I've watched the movies and read the books so many times over now that I really love the little twirp :-) He's such a sweetie when he's around Pole... and I love how his second trip into Narnia really brings so much more out of him.
I really like the Pevensie children's dynamic in LWW... how Peter wants to protect them all, and Susan's all motherly, and Lucy's the cute little inquisitive noble one, and Ed... well, he comes around, but every family's got a jerk at one time or another(and I suppose Susan steps into that role once Ed leaves it). And Edmund's older self in Dawn Treader is adorable.
I used to have the BIGGEST crush on Peter as a kid, though. Especially after the BBC movies and I had a face to put with him. Hrm... decisions, decisions... I'm thinking of something set maybe the winter after LWW now... He is Sir Peter Wolfsbane, after all... would work with the werewolf bit in the challenge nicely *G*

Date: 2003-09-29 02:51 am (UTC)Go for it, tg! I'm always interested to get a peek at new fandoms, and I can't wait to see what you do with it!
As for the challenge, I wish I was brave enough to actually try and make myself write a fic completely on my own. Maybe a short vignette would be the best way to ease into fic, without requiring me to come up with a huge, elaborate, and well-constructed plot. That's where I usually break down...I have all these ideas for cool little things I'd love to see, but I can never come up with a plot to support it.
Right now, my mind is busy trying to find a way to work those Halloween bunnies into LOTR. I'm leaning very very heavily toward taking plot bunny number 1 and incorporating it into a Paths of the Dead ROTK fic. The new trailer is all the inspiration I need! Yummy Legolas with his hood up looking all pale and mysterious...*fangirl sigh*

Date: 2003-09-29 03:03 am (UTC)And I think something short would be a lot of fun to read... my HP fic answering the challenge is going to be bloody long.
I like to play around with writing different sorts of fics, length-wise. One-hour-fics are my new passion. I never really quite make it in an hour (especially with editing) but it's nice to write short things. I'd suggest a drabble but I doubt anyone could fit all the words/phrases into 100 or even 250 words of a story. Well. I wouldn't be able to do it, at least.
I'm finding the "Trick or treat" line to be the most difficult to work into any fandom not based in the "real" world. So I keep gravitating to challenge #1. But I'd ADORE reading a LotR story! And it sounds like you have an excellent idea/source of inspiration! I haven't seen the new trailer, but I read your spoilers *G* And I have ALWAYS sort of had a men-in-sweatshirts-with-hoods-up fetish so I'm expecting cloaks-with-hoods translates just fine, especially where Legolas is concerned.
You couldn't imagine just how many sniffley, sick guys-in-hooded sweatshirts stories I wrote when I was back in middle school. It's insanity. LOL!
The CON books are really good. A liiiiittle too religious for my taste in parts... but as long as I block out a lot of the hit-you-on-the-head religious symbolosm I REALLY enjoy them. Tolkien, bless him, wasn't too fond of them either despite being Lewis' good friend and fellow plot-bunny-sharer. But they're like the Wizard of Oz stories to me... something safe and imaginative from my childhood that always gets the fantasy blood pumping through me every time I read them :-)
And thanks for the encouragement for a possible CON fic :-) Glad to know that if I manage to write something, people will read it in the end

Date: 2003-09-29 03:17 am (UTC)Edmund, after the crap he pulls in LWW just turned me off of him. lol. I get really into liking and disliking characters. lol.
I'm not sure how many people have read any of them, but I know that the ones that have would love to see one!

Re: CON
Date: 2003-09-29 03:27 am (UTC)I really get into liking/hating characters, too. ESPECIALLY when it comes to this series. It's one of the very few where characters who are bad really are bad. I mean, NO value to them what-so-ever. And when they're good, they're perfect. It's so unrealistic, but works with the sort of world that CSLewis created. ANd I know he really tries to emphasize the importance of forgiveness when a person goes back to the "good" side. But it's hard when Edmund (and others who follow similar paths) are such complete jerks.
Like Peter in HP. Even if he ends up doing something good(like saving Harry) in a future book, I'll always hate the guy.
But Edmund's great in the other books he appears in, so he grew on me. Plus when he gets all revengey on the White Witch at the end of LWW it's really nice to see *G* But I'm leaning towards a Peter fic anyway :-)
