TG's Realm Updated
Oct. 15th, 2003 10:17 pmThis update includes:
*2 new video clips (Kissing Jessica Stein- better quality)
*6 video clips re-loaded upon request (Friends)
*1 new LotR story- Discovering is Disheartening
*1 new Harry Potter story- Love and Lightheartedness
*2 new tv/movie sounds (Star Trek: Enterprise)
I'm nearing 100 fanfics... oohhh SO excited. Of course I prefer quality to quantity in nearly all ocassions... it's still exciting as I never dreamed of writing so many. Er, scratch that. I meant I never dreamed of finishing so many. I've been writing fanfic since I was 3 or 4... I just tend to never finish most of what I start!
Wish I could post my challenge fics... but I'll be patient and post them after the challenge site/group is up so I don't spoil anything, of course! I'm looking forward to seeing how other people's stories turn out since I took very uncreative routes, myself!

Date: 2003-10-16 02:49 am (UTC)I'm *really* contemplating issuing a similar challenge in the future... possibly around the holiday season... or possibly around Valentine's day. I'll be interested to see the response from this one... maybe it'll be enough for me to be brave and post a challenge in the future *G*
But yeah... I am very much looking forward to seeing how other people used the words in stories... especially since I had such trouble with a few of them, making them flow as part of the stories and all!
A question about 'Elf Sharing' fic
Date: 2003-10-16 04:01 am (UTC)I was just rereading through some of my favorite fics of yours, and I think I picked up a nuance of 'Elf-sharing' that I had missed commenting on before. Legolas's line at the end about how he 'would have tried this long ago', combined with his mischevious smile...was that meant to somehow imply that Legolas willed himself to catch cold? That was the impression I got, but I wanted to see if it was intentional. Oh, but if elves can truly will themselves to come down with the sniffles...the possibilities that open to my imagination are endless!
Re: A question about 'Elf Sharing' fic

Honestly, though, I'm not entirely sure what he meant by that. On the surface I meant it to imply that, yes, he had some control over his illness' presence.
Now, I'd very much like to assume what you did, that he willed himself to catch cold in an effort of stopping the arguing and getting Gimli & Aragorn to cooperate for his sake.
It's possible, though, that he only meant it offhandedly, that he had no control at all. That he just "would" have tried it long ago, had he known the results.
Another possibility is that he was faking the whole time, which would make his more exaggerated, uncovered sneezes much more amusing as they annoyed Gimli. When I hear the line in my head, the way Legolas/Orlando's voice says "tried" makes me think that he was only faking.
My closest guess, however, is that he felt he was coming down with a cold and perhaps did something to sort of speed it up out of necessity. His slightly more regal/"up high"-ness at the beginning of the story hints to me that he knew something was coming about, that something was going to happen. Else I can't quite see why he wouldn't tell them right then and there to deal with their disagreement (for it's obvious he knew it wasn't an insult to Gimli's mother). So I'd like to believe the cold was a coincidence and he simply brought out the severity and his need of being cared for just to suit the purposes of getting Gimli and Legolas to stop fighting.
Honestly, I'm not quite sure what the real answer is... and Legolas won't tell me. So I decided to leave it ambiguous in the fic and see what others thought. I would certainly not put it past an elf to be able to have such control and make himself sick (and TONS of yummy thoughts result from that!) but the elf's evasive... I just can't be sure what he meant. But I loved the line so I didn't want to take it out even if I wasn't clarifying. I love it because no matter what the reason for it is, the point is that Legolas knew what he was doing from the beginning and it was all his idea to get Gimli and Aragorn both to care about him as a "person" not just a play thing.
Re: A question about 'Elf Sharing' fic
Date: 2003-10-16 04:35 am (UTC)The concept of fighting over him was the general reason for the story- the concept of elf-sharing as you will. And I like to think it was simply that Legolas stood back and told them to work something out and went along with it as long as they were happy.
But it's clear from the beginning of the story that, while Gimli and Aragorn are the best of friends, some things will still make them argue- that being their time to have Legolas.
And seeing that they were having this arguement, I think Legolas would willingly want to step in to solve the problem, but it's not really his place to do so. So, thus, he uses the illness to solve the problem for him- however it came about, he certainly uses it to his advantage.
So when Gimli and Aragorn continue fighting over who *won't* have the now sick(and less attractive in their eyes) elf, that's where I intended most of the ironic humor in the story to fall. And yet, it's clear that while Legolas knows they're still fighting (over not having him) he STILL manages to get them to take care of him AND put their arguement aside to agree/cooperate.
Because clearly he knows that both Gimli and Aragorn won't want to refuse him, and they'll try to show each other up as far as taking care of him. And thus, I think Legolas is just completely brilliant and can use them any way he likes, which makes me think the cold was completely brought on by him.
But, ah, I guess I'll never know. It's been fun trying to figure it out, though!
Re: A question about 'Elf Sharing' fic
Date: 2003-10-16 05:35 am (UTC)I really, really like the idea that he has some measure of control over his illness here. Of all the options (1. He made himself get sick. 2. No control over it at all. or 3. Could feel himself becoming ill and made a conscious choice not to fight it), I think I'm with you in liking choice 3 the best. It really plays into the concept you touched on in your earlier (and IMHO, best LOTR character piece) fic 'Cherishing', how so much of an elf's health and well-being is influenced by emotion and state of mind.
Besides that, though, it allows for the retention of some measure of helplessness yet in Legolas...that he could choose to fight it, but didn't have any say over getting sick in the first place. Gotta keep some of that vulnerability that makes sick elf-boy so cute!
While we're on the subject of cute and vulnerable, I adore how you play up Legolas's increased cold intolerance, need for multiple cloaks to stay warm, and adorable sleepiness in your cold fics. 'Refuge from the Cold' was utterly perfect in this regard, and I would sell my soul to see that fic played out for real.
Ok, back to the fic at hand...I love that you mentioned his need to be cared for, and especially seen as a person and not a pretty toy, for sex or otherwise. As an elf, Legolas is so often superior in skills, stamina, experience, etc, that he often seems to be taken for granted. He constantly stood watch for the Fellowship so that the mortals could sleep, so I think it's only fitting that they let him bed down and snuggle for warmth for a change. I love how he used his illness to make them decide what's important in their relationships...and I still think Aragorn and Gimli were fools for trying to pass off the chance to cuddle a sneezy elf. (Darn, now I'm seriously craving some sniffly-elf-snuggling time myself! *mega-grin*).
Legolas really was rather brilliant in this fic, no matter which way your readers choose to interpret it. I commend you for your multi-dimensional plot and the depth of character analysis you've done on this trio!
Re: A question about 'Elf Sharing' fic
Date: 2003-10-16 04:37 am (UTC)I also saw it as a possible hint towards a three-way. But I certainly didn't want to go down that road! LOL But it's a possibility if you read the line in its entirety and take into account that they're both hovering around him and touching him now whereas he would have had to settle for one or the other under their deal.
OK, I'm done with the subject now. This should teach you for asking brilliant questions, huh?! LOL!
Re: A question about 'Elf Sharing' fic
Date: 2003-10-16 05:39 am (UTC)But yeah, Legolas has definitely placed himself into a very nice position...the best of both worlds, the center of attention and affection...go elf-boy!
Question about Gravitation
Date: 2003-10-17 09:05 pm (UTC)Re: Question about Gravitation
Date: 2003-10-17 09:11 pm (UTC)I actually thought I'd have a problem with them, age-wise, but Schuchi's not really as young as he acts all the time... and Yuki's just too delicious for words *G* So I turned out to really like them. I think Schuchi's sneezes in the series certainly helped him grow on me! Not to mention the voices I was already familiar with from watching Weiss.
I haven't read the manga- though now I certainly will have to track it down somehow! Thanks for letting me know.
And glad you liked the fic :-)
