Challenge...
Oct. 23rd, 2003 09:00 pmJe suis not good with secrets.
Je suis not good at self restraint.
Je suis not good at French :-)
But I'm trying. I will say it's REALLY hard not to read the challenge fics ahead of time when you have them sitting on your computer staring at you! LOL! And it's difficult to code fics without reading them(I hope I didn't mess up spacing, etc. but I can't read them through to check). But I'm tough and strong and I'm resisting the urge to even glance at them. Tis difficult, though!
But just as an update... Annalisa's Yahoo Group looks good- I have a feeling it's going to be flooded with happy feedback when it opens up. I put myself on no mail until then, just so I'm not even tempted to read the stories. And the archive is looking okay... it's at a forced width of 800pixels which I think is a pretty standard width nowadays for a minimum, given screen resolutions. But if anyone has a problem with this, tell me now because it requires a lot of redoing if it's not okay.
Anyhoo... I'm excited... and worried... two of my stories are in fandoms I've never finished a fic in before so I'm terrified about those two. And one of my stories has underage Marauders, so I don't know how people'll feel about that. And two of them I wrote and edited VERY quickly so I'm sure there are mistakes I'll be kicking myself over. So I'm really nervous about feedback. I hope people end up liking them, though *crosses fingers*
I always go through this on Christmas, too, wanting to tell everyone what I got them days before the holidays. I'm really bad at not telling. I've been watching a lot of Yami no Matsuei to keep my mind off it, though. I watched episodes 3 through 9 today. I'm waiting for the last 4 to download now. Think I'll watch a little Dinatopia in the meantime. I got through an hour or two of it last night before bed. I adore David Thewlis in it- he's such fine actor- he does smarmy self-centered crachedy old git VERY well. I'm still sure he's NOT my Professor Lupin but he's a damn good actor so I'm willing to give it a shot. I watched some of another movie with him in it a month or so ago (have been meaning to watch the whole thing) and he was supposed to be a nice guy, but he just... doesn't do it for me. No fangirl giggling, no heart racing, no excitement when he comes on screen (assuming I can hold back revulsion at times). The best I can manage is a HUGE appreciation for his acting talents and indifference. But hell, that's better than utter dislike which is where I was at this time last year! So it's an improvement!

Date: 2003-10-24 06:11 am (UTC)Yeah, lots of people who said they'd have stories haven't sent them yet- which is fine. I think Annalisa meant midnight on Friday(as in 11:59pm Friday) rather than Friday morning. So people might be submitting through Friday and she'll announce it Sat or Sun. It takes me about half an hour max(usually more like 15 minutes) to code and upload each fic, so hopefully it won't be too hard on my part, either and I can enjoy reading them as I post them for a change! :-)
We've got 7 stories now, though. Which isn't at all a bad turnout, really. But I have heard from at least 3 other people who said they're writing one. So I'm crossing my fingers that we'll have more. Not that I mind small numbers... but I wrote 4 of the 7 so it's less fun for me LOL!
But don't be nervous! I'm sure it's grand. I'm especially interested since you chose plot bunny 2. So far, only you and I have chosen that one. Everyone else has picked plot bunny 1 to write to. What do people have against werewolves, I wonder? LOL!

Date: 2003-10-24 09:44 am (UTC)I LOVED the "Is that you" line! I created a whole 3-page situation just so I could use that one the way I wanted to in my HP story! In my Cronicles of Narnia fic, I just had Peter be all groggy and out of it, which was cute/fun, too.
I sort of just stared at the phrases and hoped that something like a plot/situation would jump out at me. And I find it REALLY interesting that we have 3 HP fics and NONE of them (yet!) use werewolf or full moon to refer to Remus! I would have thought that was a given when looking at the terms!
I did have trouble with some of the terms, too... might be fun to discuss that on the yahoo group when it's finally open. :-)

Date: 2003-10-24 11:28 pm (UTC)As for my Marauder fic... I purposely tried not to make werewolf apply to Lupin... though it's used at least twice in the story. Just as a challenge to myself. I was taking the easy way out writing an HP fic for a Halloween challenge and didn't want to make it too easy on myself! I set the story in their first year so no one knows he's a werewolf yet, anyway, so it wasn't too difficult. Though it's certainly written hoping the reader knows.
I'm hoping there will be more challenges in the future... I'd love a New Year's(with themes of new beginnings, not just the holiday) or Valentine's Day(or anti-v-day) one... and I'm thinking of proposing one myself if no one else does. But Halloween's my FAVORITE holiday, so I had fun with this one *G*
Have fun tonight with your friend! :-)

Date: 2003-10-25 05:08 am (UTC)I ADORE doing research for stories. I can easily spend 20 hours in research for every 1 writing on a story. Historical fiction is my very favorite thing to write, hands down.
Oh, but you really DO need to write an HP story! Especially since you have that group and all! heehee

Date: 2003-10-26 03:40 am (UTC)And I do agree, it's hard to write and research under a deadline. I love researching and being inspired by it, though. Thinking up ways of involving historical characters, etc.
As for plot bunnies... I've been thinking. I know I'm always inspired to write sneezefic for the threesome at the spot in the 2nd movie where it's snowing on them and Harry & Ron look so angsty and worried and cold. Awwww! Just screams "write a fic about me!"
But I've been trying to think of some other ideas to suggest... I'll try and get some bunnies together and will bombard your e-mail, okay? :-)

Date: 2003-10-26 03:54 am (UTC)But yes, lots of bedridden-ness in general accompanied nearly every ailment :-) GOT to love that!
I'm a few paragraphs into you SH fic now :-) Enjoying it so far... even if IC's still in bed. heehee! I'm off to read! (I'm reading out of order but reviewing in order)

Date: 2003-10-26 04:20 am (UTC)But it's good to be brave now and then... especially when it's only writing the word. And when it fits the story well enough.
Oh, certainly the longer the better!!!
And I *think* your story is correct. I had to recode it by scratch (which took, what, 10 minutes maybe?) so check it out again when you get a change to be sure I didn't do something else wrong this time! LOL! http://www.geocities.com/sfchallenges/allswell.html

Date: 2003-10-25 12:44 am (UTC)But it'd be fun to have then every few months, certainly!
I've always enjoyed Thanksgiving Fics... always a lot of ways to be creative with those- angst, random people showing up, people being forced to be with others, lots of time for reflection. Nice stuff. But I wouldn't want to force a challenge this soon after the last one :-) Though, hey, the more fics the better! :-)
I'm still crossing my fingers that it'll be a huge turnout tonight :-) Guess we'll see!
I love Halloween... but that's probably because I'm a pagan and thus my main holiday. And I have a lot of things to be thankful for and lots of deaths to reflect on this year. Oh, and going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show like I do every year *G* That's what halloween is to me now that I'm older. Though (and one of my challenge fics reflects this) I LONG to have a house and decorate it and pass out candy to little kids. Kids don't Trick or Treat at apartment complexs in a college town- not that I blame them! But I can't wait for the day that I get to pass out candy to kids with spooky music in the background and all *G* It'll always be a great holiday for me, I think.

Date: 2003-10-25 05:35 am (UTC)I saw RHPS on VHS 58 times before I got devirginized and saw it with the live cast and audience participation. I think it's such a fantastic and original movie. I mean, what else could get me to stand outside in lingerie for 4 hours in line to shoot water guns at friends and watch a movie I've already seen a hundred times? heehee It's really one of a kind. And I'm just thankful I get to do it once a year. And be all naughty in public for a change *G*
When I was a kid, Easter used to be my favorite holiday. I loved the rebirth and the spring and it's when my bday is, too. But now it's Halloween... quite the opposite, huh? :-)
As for decorating... yeah... I put up Christmas lights 2 years ago in my apartment. Looked so neat that I haven't taken them down. So I'm scared to decorate more for fear that they'll stay! LOL!

Date: 2003-10-26 03:46 am (UTC)Easter was on my birthday when I was 7years old... but not since. I'm still looking forward to it happening again one year. :-)
i like the whole spiritual part of Halloween (how it used to be "All Hollow's Eve").
LOL *couh* Yeah. And before the Christians stole it, it was Samhain(which is what I celebrate) :-)
