Just came back from seeing RENT. *sigh* A better musical could not exist. I'm such a Mark, it's not even funny. I love that guy to death. Had a fantastic time, though the sound people were HORRID and the lighting wasn't too great either(though it got better). I thought it was just a fluke at first- half of the beginning lines weren't able to be heard, and they didn't have any of the phone rings whenever there were phone calls. Then at the point where the power blows- the phone rings instead and the lights stayed on. The actors looked at each other and yelled "THE POWER BLOWS!" and the lights finally went out(without the proper sound effect). *slaps hand against forehead* But the sound didn't improve much after that. If I didn't know every word I know I would have missed some important lines.
Many of Mark's lines (and others') couldn't be heard because the mic was down too low, though luckily Collins' were all there. At the La Vie Boheme reprise at the end of Act 1, Mimi's mic was too soft and Mark's mic was off completely and he had to SHOUT his lines really loudly. He sounded angry about it but that worked for the song. Still *sigh* it would have nice to have heard it properly
Mark was played fantastically. I couldn't have asked for a better one. A line from the actor's bio cracked me up "After years of singing RENT in the car, he is thrilled to be doing it on stage!" LMAO! That's soooooo perfect. And Collins just blew me away. Angel wasn't too bad at all(though I'd seen better), and Mimi was great. Both Moureen and Joanne were very original in the way they delivered their lines- a very unique and good performance, especially Joanne. Benny was also pretty good- nice strong voice. But Roger... ugh... he was horrible. Very dissapointing. Good thing he's one of my least favorite characters or I would have been pissed. He was a skinny, frizzy haired guy with a very weak, medium-pitched voice. He, too, delivered his lines originally, but I didn't care for some of the inflections he gave to lines. Sounded too much like he was trying his best not to sound like the original cast at every step, you know? But aside from a pathetic Roger, the cast was fantastic- the company mixed well when they could be heard (during Christmas Bells the balance was all wrong volume-wise, couldn't hear any of Mimi's lines, for example), and the soloists were SO FANTASTIC and got lots of applause.
The film at the end didn't show up on the side of our auditorium very well, and they kept putting it up too high to be seen by most of us. But in general it was a very moving ending and immediately got a standing ovation by us all (the show was obviously sold out) though most everyone clapped after most of the great numbers anyway.
This time I started crying during 'Glory!' (4th song in the musical) Usually I make it at least to the Life Support meeting or even 'Will I?'(13th song) before I start bawling. But something about the creating and dying and hopelessness caught me and I was sobbing that early into it. Which is weird, because usually I'm not a big Roger fan. Second act I only made it halfway through the first song. And when Collins is carrying Angel around when she's in her hospital clothes, oh, I was a MESS of tears. Collins was FANTASTIC at the 'Cover You' reprise. That really made my night. He was really fantastic. Wow. Spectacular singing. Really blew me away. Even if I was bawling. I had *such* a good time!
