Hey... stupid person who hasn't read the books fully here and can ask easier than trying to hunt down an answer....

Does it say/describe anywhere about where Aragorn lives at the end of the third book? I was writing a fic and then started to go with a tradition castle, then suddenly realized that was just an idea I got in my head from fanfic. Maybe he lifed in a palace... or, I dunno, I really have no clue. So I thought I'd ask before I start with all these irreversable castle details :-) Thanks!!!

Minas Tirith (the city in Gondor where he lived) was based around a fortress/castle, and the Citadel was at the top so that it over-looked the whole city. It's basically a huge stronghold which has been standing for a few thousand years. It's described as being full of stone walls etc, so I think you're pretty safe with a castle description.

And you're writing an Aragorn fic? Yay!!! *bg*

*SPOILERS for anyone who has not read ROTK*

Actually, Legolas and Gimli don't go sailing away for a good many years after the war ends...not until every other member of the Fellowship is dead or already in Valinor. Legolas builds his ship and leaves with Gimli shortly after Aragorn dies and the throne passes to his son Eldarion.

As for Minas Tirith, Tolkien went to great pains to describe its appearance in detail. The city is butted up against a mountainside and it consists of 7 circular layers of walls and city sections, each rising higher than the previous, with the first circle being bordered by the main walls of the city and the 7th circle being the one in which the King lives and where the White Tower of Ecthelion is located. The Court of the Fountain and the dead White Tree are in the 7th circle as well. The Houses of Healing are located in the 6th circle. The gates in each wall to allow passage to the next circle are not arranged in a straight line, so to pass up into higher circles, one must wind his way back and forth to the next staggered gate. This highly increases security and defensibility against invasion. In the movie, the whole place is made of what appears to be white, marblelike stone.

By the point of the Ring War, the city is slowly falling into decay and disrepair, and the White Tree of Gondor is dying. However, Gimli and his group of dwarves help rebuild the walls and stone structures, and Legolas and his elves bring in plantlife and make the city alive again.

Here's some artwork showing the city: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Lair/5360/MTIRITH2.JPG

And here's a really nice site with lots of pictures both from various artists and the movie.Make sure you click on to 'Explore the upper levels' of the city too, but beware massive spoilers:

And finally, really great diagrams from the Atlas of Middle Earth, which you can also find in bookstores.:

I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have! I've been thinking about the city and where guests might stay, and the like quite a lot lately myself, for my several Legolas fics currently dancing in my mind *G*
