You ever know you should kick some ass but you don't really feel like it?
New cartoon sneezing group started- which is great and all. I'm all for it. Variety is good :-)
http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/CartoonSneezingGroup
Just that lots of the materials posted on it- wavs and comics particularly came from my sites- and I'm pretty damn sure I never gave permission. Okay, so one could argue that if it's on TOS, it's community property, as per the point of that site. HOWEVER, this is why I created a terms of usage statement here: http://tos.beastlet.com/terms.html
which clearly states that some materials on TOS are NOT to be redistributed or reposted in any other form.
And while I'm damn pissed about it, I don't really have the time/effort/desire to go kick some ass about it. It's just... grrr... annoying to put your own time into scanning comics and making wavs and have them stolen without being asked permission. Had I been asked, I would have granted it in most cases. But point is, there was no asking involved. Which pisses me off. Which is why I created the terms of usage statement in the first place. But I REALLY don't feel like kicking ass on this issue right now. I'm NOT a confrontational chica. Just needed to rant. *sigh* Just one of the MANY reasons I distance myself from "the community"
And really, the part I'm most pissed about is taking things I have on TOS that others gave me specifically/exclusively for TOS use. Okay, so Gurm isn't around any longer to feel pissed that said group admin posted some things he spent good money to scan in and allowed me to post on my site because he was a sweetie and I asked him. But the point is, not everything on TOS is public domain- and NOTHING on TG's Realm is to be used as public domain without asking first. *sigh* Just makes me rethink the whole spending time to give to others thing.
GRRR! I hate the damn "community"

Date: 2003-12-23 11:05 am (UTC)But, yes, I completely understand the *desire* to kick ass paired off with a lack of energy to do so. I call it "teaching freshman composition". ;)
I'm sorry to see this happen, hon. You've worked damn hard to give us all a home, and now it seems someone is taking bricks, shingles, and nails from that house.

Hang in there, and keep fighting!

Re: "community" and stealing
Date: 2003-12-23 08:08 pm (UTC)I'm just not very good at fighting. I prefer when people use common sense and I don't have to fight :-)
But I suppose that's expecting too much from people.
And yes, you're exactly right. One of the reasons I feel so strongly about it is because I post things generously and in good faith... and it's much worse when people steal things others have generously created and made available freely. There are a ton of wonderfully generous people out there in the community... it's just too bad my estimation of the group as a whole has to drop when there are people who violate trust *sigh*
Thanks for making me feel as though I'm not going insane for feeling a bit angry over this.

Date: 2003-12-23 02:00 pm (UTC)That would really annoy me. Ok- it really annoys me now, but it would annoy and frustrate me even More if I had gone through all that work!
My personal opinion is that it is common curteousy to Ask first. I haven't really been to the new site- probably won't actually- cartoons really aren't my thing. I am sure that the more common type of things were probably just coincidences, but if the person had seen some really cool cartoon on your site that was more rare, I Definately think that should have prompted the person to ask you.
Anyway... I don't agree with this policy that some have of- "It's out there- let's take it". Some people unfortunately don't seem to recognize the time and effort that others have put in.
*hugs*

Date: 2003-12-23 08:14 pm (UTC)I don't *mind* my files being used for this particular purpose... I just simply like to be asked first because I've been entrusted with things others have given specifically for TOS and nowhere else. Which is why I created the terms of usage document in the first place. People just don't bother reading that kind of thing. Grrr.
