Had a great book-nerd day today. Woke up at my normal time and headed to Baltimore to the Book Thing. I got a bunch of books (mostly kids books and paperbacks that fit nicely into paper bags for storage purposes). I have NOWHERE to put them so I told myself not to get many, but I still left the Book Thing with 165 books. LOL
Only 2 or 3 will be added to Mountain Range To Be Read. The other 160 or so will be for BookCrossing. My three favorite books found today were:
- Small/mini-sized book of Lady Cottington's Pressed Faries by Brian Froud- I don't have this one; didn't even know it existed. It's so tiny I can't wait to explore it. I basically saw it on the shelves and snatched it up immediately, stuffing it into my bag; it's still in my car.
- Doctor Who and the Seeds of Doom- It's a 4th Doctor book and it's beat up/well-loved. I look forward to reading it! I've never found a Doctor Who book at the Book Thing. In fact, it's rare to see one second hand here in the states at all, let alone for free
- Star Trek: Deep Space Nine-- Bloodletter- when I sat down to register this book, I was surprised to find this one was already a BookCrossing book! It found its way into my hands after starting in New Mexico! http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/7633393
After the Book Thing we went to Panera to eat. One of our local BookCrossers couldn't make it which was such a bummer (she was going to bring her mom who is also a BookCrosser and book lover). So it was only 3 of us (well, 4 if you count the son of one of the 3 of us; he has his own bookshelf at BookCrossing so I suppose we should count him). We had a nice, long lunch and some great conversation. I'm jealous they get to go to Amsterdam this April (I'll be in Denver for work so there wasn't any way I could go with them). I look forward to hearing all about it though!
Then we were ready to leave but none of us had solid plans for the rest of the day. So we ended up at one of our houses (not mine; mine has never been so messy-- I swear, this place is nothing but boxes and papers everywhere. I can't even see my TV from my chair now because there are 5 empty cardboard boxes stacked on top of a pile of mail on top of a mailer holding all my wings from FaerieCon on top of a pillow that doesn't have a pillow case on top of two gray tupperware boxes-- and that stack is blocking my view. And that's just representational of the more than 20 similar stacks covering my place. There's stuff overflowing on every surface. It's painful and embarrassing.
Anyway, we had a little registration party and I got about half a bag (maybe a little more than that) registered. 30 down, 130 to go! :-) heehee It was fun hanging and talking. I love my BookCrossing friends!
Then two of us went to eat at a little place near my house that I love (I've only ever done takeout there and we got the impression that they were technically closing the dine-in portion for the night because all the chairs were on the tables, but we ate there anyway and I had a good time).
I got about 3 discs of my audiobook earread in the car as well, which is good. Not sure I'll be able to finish it before December ends (I'm not going to meet EITHER of my pages read goals for 2010 which is depressing) but I'm making a good effort.
It was a fantastic, fun day! It was a great way to kick off my week of me-time. On the 30th I'm going to DC to the Museum of Crime and Punishment. If the weather is good I might stick around and snarf a Heritage trail or two nearby. Otherwise, this week will be the week I get caught up on everything. Most importantly: the Annual Challenge and cleaning this freakin messy room!
