Updates (more) & Random thoughts
Dec. 30th, 2003 04:49 amUpdated the challenge archive and coded another 3 fics today. Right now we have a total of 10 fics. WHOOHOO! That's not bad for more than a week away from the deadline. *hugs all the writers* Okay, so I wrote 4 of the 10... but, really, that's still pretty damn good IMHO!
I had two semi-random thoughts I've been meaning to see if anyone had any opinions about...
1- On the Neville=Peter front in HP... I tend to think of them as similar in nature for a number of reasons... and yet intrinsically I know they are VERY different characters. Still, when I write Peter, I do so with some characterstics I know are given to Neville- like the snoring, for instance. It struck me yesterday that maybe I am seeing it as Peter=the Neville who would have been. What I mean is, Neville has the potential to be a Peter... but there's a number of factors that change him over the course of the books so that he's now sort of the anti-Peter. One, being his parents' situation of course. But in general, his increasing bravery and courage shown throughout all the books (especially 1, 4 and 5, obviously) And while they seem to have the same instincts and core... the same potential, if you will... it seems Neville has veered off the one path towards another. As both are Gryffindors, I like to think Peter once had that brave streak, too. But perhaps there were factors that changed him a little. He was "never brave"(in his own words, book 3) but the hat obviously saw potential in him, and he did become an animagus. But where Peter went one way, based on his fears, Neville seems to have chosen to go another- instead fo just fearing the death eaters, he stands against them for his friends and parents. Anyway... that's just what hit me yesterday. That I do write them similarly, but maybe I'm supposed to think they are similar, deep down? I know during one dream sequence/imagination sequence Harry does equate the two... so maybe that's where I got it initially? Still, I think both the comparison and the growing in different ways are somewhat valid. And it's a nice comparison to the Harry&Voldy thing going on there... or the Draco&Lucius contast... or Harry&his parents, etc. In general, it's interesting how the book manages to focus on both generations, while concentrating on just the present set of kids. It's a nice reminder that the past repeats itself... and yet, doesn't necessarily have to because we all have choices. Which is one reason I don't like the prophecy so much- all this about choices and it seems Harry's fate is completely set in stone(literally). But it does seem that JKR is deliberately drawing connections between people in Harry's age group and groups in the past... it'll be interesting to see how much change really does end up happening in their characters.
2- LotR Legolas/Gimli question now... anyone into the pairing ever read/think about Gimli's obsession with Galadriel? I keep listening to John Rhys Davies going on and on about Gimli seeing her and never having eyes for anyone else... and it occurred to me that it might make sense for him to even think of her while being with Legolas (as they're, er, close as far as looks). Twas a thought that disturbed me greatly as I don't like my Gimli thinking about ANYONE but Legolas while he's making love to Legolas, let alone making love to Legolas only because he's the closest to Galadriel the dwarf will ever get. But at the same time, one could think the reason he was so infatuated with Galadriel was because he was already feeling for Legolas at that point. Anyway, was just wondering if anyone had read any fics addressing this little infatuation of Gimli's, or had any thoughts about it.

Date: 2003-12-31 07:52 am (UTC)And as for Gimli's love for Galadriel....well, I don't know what to think about the whole issue, but I know what I like to read about, and I think that if you *did* make that part of your Gimli - that he has this perfect and untouchable love for Galadriel and sometimes dreams about her when he is with Legolas...I think that would be extremely cool! Now this is just me personally, but I dream about other people when I am with my lover - not all the time, but enough - LOL! Why shouldn't other people - or dwarves!??!
