Something special
Mar. 4th, 2004 01:27 amThere's just something special about revisiting your very first online fandom. The special vocabulary, the common character perceptions, the overwleming amounts of appreciation and respect, the pictures everyone always drools over, the fans that seem so much like you because back then they were and you were a part of it *sigh*
I always think I'll jump in and join some sort of Highlander community somewhere. But my memories of the Rysher forum are so dear to me that I'm not sure anything will ever compare to how incredible it was. Having never had anyone in real life who watched the show (and thus no one I could talk to about it- and believe me, I tried) it was like a whole new world to become part of the online fandom. And like any other community, we had our heroes, and our slang, and our customs. Sometimes I go searching for that online now. I get bits and pieces from here and there. But I miss the good ol' sites that are now closed. I loved anticipating and then discussing new episodes as they came out. I loved how everyone knew as much about the show as me, if not more. And that's saying a lot. *sigh* I miss the frus. I miss the forumlanders. I miss the clans. I miss the HAM reviews. I miss BJ. And I miss the Beachball of Evil(heck, I even miss the Chocolate Beachball of Evil, and that's saying a lot)
*sigh* I was reading the Highlander100 community and sighing over the cute drabbles and the terms only Highlander fans use and the lovely icons and all the fan passion I left behind so many years ago. It's sad. I still watch the show ever damn weekday on TNN. And my walls are still covered with posters. And it's still the only fandom I've ever attended a convention for. But... I just miss it. There's something really special about it. It'll always be my favorite show, of that I am certain. Maybe one day I'll find my way back to one of the online communities :-)
