I won't give you sympathy, or tell you how it's all going to be all right. Because, yeah, I don't know that it will be. But, I will offer hugs, and a shoulder should you need it. Or a punching bag. I've got thick skin. ;)

As for the question as to where to apply to -- it depends on the store. If you're thinking a big place like Wal-Mart or TJ Maxx or something, try the Customer Service desk and ask about it there. And if it's more a little in-the-mall store, just ask an employee if you can drop off a resume. That's my advice. :)
