Fantasy movies
Mar. 17th, 2004 02:12 pmI dunno... maybe it's because I always watched fantasy movies, but I never felt any shortage of them. Sure, they never used to get quite the recognition they do now... but I always felt their presence and that there was a strong audience.
I was just told to go read This Article about tons of new movies following the success of HP and LotR. I already knew about narnia... and am more than glad those are finally being made, even if I do still adore the old BBC versions of the first 4 books. I sort of shrugged my way through the article. Nothing really astonishing or new, you know?
But then I get, from a completely different mailing list, This News Story about Sci Fi channel making an Earthsea mini-series. Oohhhhh YAY! And then I was bouncing happily again. I adored Ged. I remember my mother MAKING me read the first Earthsea book by Le Guin when I was in 5th or 6th grade... don't remember which. And I remember loving it to death. I haven't read them since, though. It was sort of a coming-of-age story that I like to think of as coinsiding with my own coming-of-age and I want to keep it special like that. But of course I'll watch the mini-series. Yay! Happy happy! Looks like some good writers and producers as well. Wish it were the whole book series, not just the first two books, though.
Completely unrelated note, but boyfriend called me randomly yesterday afternoon all flustered "Thewlis! I think I just saw him!" LOL Boyfriend had been flipping channels and caught the end of Besieged on Bravo. I've seen some of that movie... I taped it and it's in my pile to watch from start to finish soon. I've got a bunch in that category... including Frequency, Atlantas, Nicholas Nickelby(with Timothy "Scabbers" Spall), Polluck, The Red Violin, Taken, a bunch of others. I'll get to them eventually. But Boyfriend was so funny "I saw him! I was like, wait, is that THEWLIS??? And then I ran and checked TV Guide and it was! Right there on TV" LOL He'd never seen the guy in anything before. I told him not to watch Dragonheart. I still have nightmares about ugly!Thewlis in that movie. As though the scary "Spanish child-molester moustache" (as boyfriend calls it) isn't bad enough! Actually, no, Boyfriend watched a little of The Island of Dr. Moreau. However that's spelled. But Thewlis spent that movie confused and running around freaked out understandably. So I'm not sure that was his finest acting hour either. Twas just funny to get a call "Your boy Thewlis is on! I saw him!" heehee *pets boyfriend* He's always good about telling me when my boys are on TV. Goooood boyfriend.
