On your current playlist, hit shuffle and pick the first twenty songs on the list (no matter how cheesy or embarrassing), and write down your favorite line of the song. Try to avoid putting the song title in the line. Then, have your friends comment and see if they know the songs.
Okay... so I didn't have a loaded playlist... so I loaded in my largest playlist to get a good variety (otherwise all you'd get were 2 or 3 different artists) So here goes! Happy guessing!!! Unless I screw up the lyrics... in which case call me on it. LOL! It's rather scary which lines are my favorite in each song, too! (And some were hard to do without mentioning the title) LOL I'll post the answers after everyone's had a shot at guessing.
#1- "We never knew we could want more than that out of life. Sure that Brenda and Eddie would always know how to survive"
#2- "No mortal man can win this day. The bell that rings inside your mind, It's challenging the doors of time. The waiting seems eternity. The day will dawn of sanity"
#3- "Don’t you hear my call though you’re many years away? Don’t you hear me calling you? Write your letters in the sand for the day I take your hand In the land that our grandchildren knew"
#4- "They came in the night while our men were asleep, this band o' Argyles, through snow soft and deep. Like murdering foxes among helpless sheep they slaughtered the house o' MacDonald."
#5- "It dispels every vapour, saves pen, ink, and paper, for when you've a mind in the pulpit to rail. 'Twill open your throats, You may preach without notes, When inspired with a bumper of..."
#6- "So many things to tell her. But how to make her see the truth about my past? Impossible... she'd turn away from me"
#7- "Radiant beams from thy holy face with dawn of redeeming grace"
#8- "When boyhood’s fire was in my blood I read of ancient freemen. When Greece and Rome who Bravely stood three hundred men and three men... So as I grew from boy to man I bent me to that bidding my spirit of each selfish plan and cruel passion ridding for thus, I hoped one day to aid oh can such hope be vain?"
#9- "I've informed you to leave 'Cause I can't afford to lose more sleep. I get ill when I get tired So I'll try to rest if you'll stand guard... How am I supposed to remember you if you won't let me forget?"
#10- "In a field down by the river, my love and I did stand. And on my leaning shoulder, she laid her snow-white hand. She bid me to take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs. But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears."
#11- "Tell you what I got in mind Cuz we're runnin' out of time. Won't you ever set me free? This waitin' 'round's killin' me"
#12- "And I dream of the moon and building lunar clone colonies. And I build my peace through strength, That's the best weapon you've got. Oh, I am the brainchild, I am the mortar, with a plastic trophy and an eating disorder"
#13- "Well we all have a face that we hide away forever and we take them out and show ourselves when everyone has gone"
#14- "Magic and wonder are waiting for you. It's as close as a dream and as bright as the brightest blue"
#15- "We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner. But we would! Although not made by the fine folks at Hardes Kraft Mac& cheese can often be an important part of your good breakfast. See what you can do is you save the noodles for later and you just kind of dump the cheese packet into a bowl, put some milk and some sugar and a couple strawberries and you've got breakfast!"
#16- "It is a mystery how she's made it through the years. Though she's never hurt anyone she feeds upon our feers. She's watched us come and go and she's wise to all who plot. Don't try to find her, she'll slip away"
#17- "Is it too much to demand I want a full house and a rock and roll band, pens that won't run out of ink, and cool quiet and time to think?"
#18- "Back, he spurred like a madman, shouting a curse to the sky, With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high. Blood-red were the spurs in the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat; When they shot him down on the highway. Down like a dog on the highway, And he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat."
#19- "Gone for soldiers every one. When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?"
#20- "Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go. So make the best of this test, and don't ask why. It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time."
I would be HIGHLY impressed if someone got more than 7 of these. LOL I have STRANGE music tastes. heehee A couple are pretty darn easy though. And if you were a former roommate of mine you should be able to get nearly all of them as I play many of these frequently- LOL!
Have fun guessing!

Date: 2004-05-03 06:11 pm (UTC)2.'A Kind of Magic'- I have this whole CD, bought it right after I saw 'Highlander:The Movie' for the first time *G*
6.'Can you feel the love tonight?'-The Lion King
7.'Silent Night' proving that this list is *very* random indeed *G*
17. I think the title is 'Passionate Kisses'.. or at least that's the phrase repeated a lot.
20. That song that says 'I hope you had the time of your life'. I'm terrible with artists and actual titles.
So that's 5 out of 20...pretty pathetic. Look for a list like this on my LJ sometime. You'll probably do a lot better, though I'll have to weed out all my songs with no lyrics whatsoever...which rules out my LOTR and SW soundtracks!
no subject
Date: 2004-05-03 07:01 pm (UTC)But YAY! You're absolutely right on all 5! That's not too bad! I honestly doubt anyone could do significantly better.
Even more random is that the #5 'Silent Night' version was sung by Wilson Phillips!
#2- Yay for Queen!!! :-) I have the... well... the cassette tape of it from back then. I didn't get a CD player for a VERY long time. So most of my older stuff is either on tapes or mp3s only. Oh, but an abridged version of the soundtrack came with the movie in the special 'Immortal' DVD set release, so I guess I do have a couple of the songs on CD now...
#17 is indeed called Passionate Kisses (is sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter) *sigh* I love this song
and #20 is 'Good Riddance(Time of Your Life)' It was my class graduation song in high school, but they wouldn't let us print the official title on the back of the graduation programs, just the subtitle and the lyrics. *pouts* Then again, these are the same people who made us vote for a class mascot and then, a year later, made us revote because they didn't like our original choice. Our original mascot was the Red Jerry Bear... but apparently that had too much of a drug connotation. *rolls eyes* Took them a year to figure it out, though. Rather amusing in a way. Grrr. Silly administrators... we ended up with the Pink Panther. Which is okay, I guess. But it's the principle of the thing... our class always got picked on... we were rebals *G* LOL
Anyway, yay! 5 isn't that bad at all! Not for that list, at least. Honestly, if someone else had #11 on their list, I wouldn't be able to get it. I was reading them over before I posted and said to myself "Wait, what the heck song is that?" Had to go back and look. LOL! So, see? Even *I* couldn't get all 20!

Date: 2004-05-03 08:16 pm (UTC)Bare Naked Ladies! Gah! They are amazing - I've seen them in concert and, honestly, I think that was one of only two concerts that I've ever been to where I wanted it to go on longer. And their fetish for mac and cheese...:)
They use "If I had a Million Dollars" on the lotto commercials in my state (Ny). Makes me happy. :-)
Ah, these quizzes make me want to make an LJ (or rather, actually use the one I've already made) :-) They amuse me so.

Date: 2004-05-03 08:41 pm (UTC)heehee! I love BNL. I've only been to one of their concerts, during their Stunt tour, but it was like Heaven. They played EVERYTHING I could have wanted them to play. And I knew all their songs by heart by then already... my friend(an acquaintence from high school who happened to go to my college as well) and I spent the day before singing every single song we knew. LOL We drove 3 hours to get to the concert, and I stayed with total and complete strangers for 3 days, but it soooooooooooo was worth it.
I love BNL *sigh* I've got about 500 songs of theirs on mp3, so I'm not surprised that out of my 2000, 2 hit the list of 20. That's a lot of numbers... ah, point is, yay BNL!
heehee! Awww That's a brilliant song to use for lotto :-)
But 3... not too bad. Not great... but thanks for trying!! *hugs*

Date: 2004-05-03 09:12 pm (UTC)Man, I suck. I only recognized two of those:
17- Passionate Kisses by Mary Chapin Carpenter,
18- The Highwayman by Loreena McKennitt.
Boo me. :P

Date: 2004-05-03 09:30 pm (UTC)Thank you for trying, though!!!
YAY The Highwayman! It's such a terrible part of the poem... but I love it. I really get into that "down like a dog on the highway" line. I put a lot of angry emotion into it while singing *G*
But YAY! Good on you for knowing that! Even if Loreena's is sort of the abridged version of the poem, I love it a lot. Was hoping with the literary-saavy-ness of the list someone would know it. So *hugs* for being the only one thus far :-) And knowing Loreena always gets high marks in my book! :-)
But 2's not too bad... some are really obscure songs, I'm afraid. Like I said to Lady Korana, I could only identify 19 of the 20 AFTER I went through and listened to the songs and made the list. LOL

Date: 2004-05-03 09:52 pm (UTC)And of course, after I saw some of the answers I recognized the lines from some of the other songs and kind of went "D'oh! How come I didn't see that the first time around?" :P
no subject
Date: 2004-05-03 10:12 pm (UTC)But I'm glad you recognized some of the other ones *G* I'm sure I'll kick myself when I find out what the 9 on Lady Korana's list I didn't know at first were!
Some of mine were REALLY rare, though. So no worries.
Ahhhh... I LOVE The Lady of Shallot. I've always wanted to write something as beautiful as that poem after hearing her sing it. Parallel Dreams is my favorite album of hers... just so many lovely... um... what's the right term? Narrative ballads? Story songs? I dunno, but I LOVE those. Ohh but Bonny Swans as well... yes yes, love her much *G*

Date: 2004-05-03 11:38 pm (UTC)Nine! That's fantastic!!! You definitely exceeded my expectations! And you're right about every one of them! Even #15(from a North Carolina concert)! And #11 which I had a HARD time picking lyrics to without the title of the song, LOL Good job! *claps enthusiastically*
Though actually... the version of #19 is by Joan Baez... but I have 4 different versions of that song on the comp(including Pete's of course)
And actually #3 is George Michael singing that at Freddy's Tribute Concert... but yes, it's a Queen song of course. I LOVE that song. So bouncy. And in this version everyone's clapping along so it's even bouncier *G*
And NO worries about the stalker bit. I added 4 people to my other LJ just today as friends because I admire their thoughts and writing and gave them all a "I'm REALLY sorry I'm stalking you" note. I felt like a freak since none of them know me at ALL... but I apologized and told 'em I could unfriend them if it squicked them. LOL But, really, I totally understand that feeling well :-) And no worries! Lurk all you like! And comment whenever you like. If I had a problem with it, I'd turn off anonymous posting or make my journal friends-only, wouldn't I? And I don't :-) So stalk/lurk all you like! But thanks for playing! *hugs*

Date: 2004-05-04 06:20 pm (UTC)#1- "We never knew we could want more than that out of life. Sure that Brenda and Eddie would always know how to survive"
Oogh, this one’s by Billy Joel. I can hear the lyrics, but the title of this is escaping me...
#9- "I've informed you to leave 'Cause I can't afford to lose more sleep. I get ill when I get tired So I'll try to rest if you'll stand guard... How am I supposed to remember you if you won't let me forget?"
Another one... Something by the Barenaked Ladies.
Finally! ‘If I Had A Million Dollars’ by the Barenaked Ladies.
#20- "Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go. So make the best of this test, and don't ask why. It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time."
‘Time of Your Life’ by Green Day

Yep! *sigh* Billy's my man :-)
#6- Can You Feel the Love Tonite- from the Lion King (I think that Elton John wrote it)
I do believe he did :-)
#7- Silent Night - (shoot- don't know the author lol)
It was a poem written by Joseph Mohr, but the music was composed in just a few hours by Franz Gruber on Christmas in 1818. "Stille Nacht" has changed a bit since, though... but I'd still consider it the same song. So, yeah, there's the author info for you :-)
My version was being sung by Wilson Phillips
#9- Drat! Can't think of the title - It's the Barenaked Ladies though
It is indeed. It's 'Leave'
#13- The Stranger - Billy Joel
Yep! One of my favorites of his!
#15- If I Had A Million Dollars- Barenaked Ladies
Good job here, too! :-)
#17- Passionate Kisses- Mary Chapin Carpenter
Oohh how's the whole CD? I have a couple songs of hers, but not the CD
#18- The Highwayman... I think (I have no clue who sung it)
Yay!!!!! LOVE this poem! It's Loreena McKennitt singing it in my version
#19- Mother's Pride- George Michael
Hrmm... actually, no. But maybe the lyrics are similar enough? This was "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"
#20- Arrrgh- can't think of the Real title "Time of Your Life"- it's by Green Day though
Heehee "Good Riddance" But yep!!
Yay! Wonderful attempt!!! *HUGS*
