HP3 & Hockey
Jun. 5th, 2004 08:24 pmWatching game 6 of the cup finals... oohh I'm sooooo nervous! *bites nails*
Maxwell says hi :-) He just nuzzled the monitor.
I went to see HP3 today, finally. Wow. I liked it and I hated it. I just like canon far too much. But it was beautiful. And there were certainly parts I LOVED. *snuggles my puppies* And there were parts I really didn't like. But I would have preferred a slow, 16 hour-long movie... so I guess there was no way I could have been completely happy. I sobbed through parts of it, though. Especially because I've been to one of the places where they filmed. So I kept crying when it came up. LOL But... yeah... I liked. And hated (I'm still not happy about Thewlis, just as I expected). And liked. It was good. I wasn't surprised by anything, though. Thanks to many many spoilers I knew everything that was going to happen or had seen it already. heehee But it was still enjoyable. Good movie!

Date: 2004-06-05 10:50 pm (UTC)There was never any question about if I'd like it enough to see it again/buy it, etc. It's just one interpretation of my fandom- there are others. The beauty of art is that it can be seen many ways. And I'd happily watch this a hundred times over just as I have the others. Doesn't mean it doesn't have its faults or that I adored every part of it. Just means it's part of my fandom and I love it like I do many other parts... and I can take the good with the bad and enjoy the experience for what it is. The book will still be my ultimate for canon. There just wasn't question about how I would feel about the movie, and I knew that going in.
though when Sirius and Remus hugged, I thought "TG will LOVE this!"
They had to have that. It's in the book for goodness sakes!!!
The parts I disliked the most weren't things they left out of the books but the things they added and changed that made NO sense based on book canon. For example: ***SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!*** where the Fat Lady calls Sirius "that man everyone's been talking about" Um... he LIVED in Gryffindor tower for 7 years. She'd KNOW who he was! There's no need or logical reason to call him that. She'd know him and call him Sirius(like she did in the book) without dancing around the subject. Just little things like that which they changed for some reason and then it made no sense.
Seeing Harry's attitude *really* bothered me more than I thought it would, though. I know he plays tricks on Malfoy and is mean to him... but stealing a lollypop and plowing down a poor group of singers just beacuse he's angry when he could have just gone around? Um, I think he has more sense than that when he's under the cloak. Just little things like that that they added really annoyed the heck out of me.

Date: 2004-06-05 11:04 pm (UTC)I saw the movie this morning (and almost saw it another two times)and I totally agree with what you've said. My dad, who knows nothing about Harry Potter besides what he's seen in the movies, and even then has forgotten pretty much everything since the last one, thought it was weird. So yeah, I definitely think they could have had more details to help out those who didn't really get what was going on and make those who did happier.

Date: 2004-06-05 11:44 pm (UTC)Hi Tg!
I loved it. Straight up. I loved it. I thought that it was beautiful, funny, pretty good with sticking through the book. I mean, it couldn't be strictly like the book in the sense that it copied EVERYTHING, because movies are supposed to kind of be different versions of the same story, but I loved it. I loved Thewlis. He was so sweet! The character I was disappointed in was Sirius. And Peter! He was just too icky. The trio were terrible, but that was to be expected. The slashy parts were so slashy though! I'm disappointed that they cut out Oliver, Cho, and Cedric. But overall, I enjoyed it a lot. I love it way more than anything Chris Columbus could've done. But then again, I wasn't a big fan of him.
Again, to make things just that much more redundant...I LOVED IT!

Date: 2004-06-06 06:08 am (UTC)What was it about David Thewlis' portrayal of Remus that you didn't like? Dorky mustache aside, I thought he did a great job. But then, as you probably remember, I've been a fan of Thewlis' since it was announced he'd gotten the part. I'd be curious to see what you didn't like...
(spoilers)
Much more than The Hug (tm) and Snape griping about them "quarreling like an old married couple," I loved the part where Sirius is trying to keep Remus' mind together, even though he's transforming. "This is where your true heart lives." I thought that was so sweet.
I'm glad you had a good time, though, even if there were parts you didn't like!
Incidentally, I got to see the movie for a second time last night, and I still didn't see any mention of Remus loving Lily. *phew!*

Date: 2004-06-06 04:10 pm (UTC)Aww, HP3 WAS good. I was exceptionally happy with most of it, though I agree with you on Thewlis. I wasn't too pleased with him, but I DID like the scene where he was lecturing/yelling at Harry about the map. That's how I always read it in my head, with Lupin sounding angry, so yay. I wasn't so keen on Hermione being the one to figure everything out ((like SHE being the one saying they were going to save Buckbeak and the lot)), and I was disappointed there wasn't more conflict between her and Ron about Crookshanks. But overall, the movie was wonderful.
I'm glad they've already started filming Goblet of Fire -- this way it won't look like the kids aged three years in one summer. :D And there's a NEW director for this one, so there's going to be even MORE changes to the style and such. Which is always exciting, not to mention nerve-wracking. LOL
Hi Maxwell! *waves to kittyness*

Date: 2004-06-06 04:37 pm (UTC)Here's the recap of the game:
In the first period- no score
In the second- Bolts scored, Flames scored, Bolts scored again, Flames scored again
In the third- no score (HOWEVER, there was something I think should have been ruled as a goal. The Flames clearly sent the puck over the goal line but 'Bulin pushed it back out. It looked like the shot was kicked in and it was ruled no goal, but no one really noticed it at the time and only talked about it in retrospect. None of the coaches or players even mentioned it... weirdness)
In the first OT- no score
In the second OT- about a minute in Tampa Bay scored!!!!! So they're going to Game 7 on Wednesday!
Apparently this is the longest running streak in the cup finals of no change of control of the game (i.e. the first team to score wins and the other team is never in the lead during the game and only playing catch up or tying at best) since 1928 or 1929 or something. It's exciting! :-)
It was a damn good game, though!!
I was exceptionally happy with most of it, though I agree with you on Thewlis. I wasn't too pleased with him, but I DID like the scene where he was lecturing/yelling at Harry about the map.
My problem with Thewlis wasn't the look, it was more in the way he delivered his lines. His acting and voice is less kind and more... raggedy or something. He sounds too mean even when he's saying nice things. And the way he delivers his lines are too slow, like he can't remember them or something. It bothers me. The lines themselves were great for the most part, though, and most of those scenes were exactly as I'd pictured in my head :-)
I wasn't so keen on Hermione being the one to figure everything out
Yeah... stealing EVERYONE'S lines... it really got old fast. And honestly, I like the little more girliness but commenting about her hair? The book 3 Hermione would NEVER have cared about her hair at a time like that, especially as it risked her seeing herself. She's been time-turning all year and just NOW she sees herself and comments on that? Makes no sense to me.
I would have liked to see a cat/rat chase scene and Crookshanks in the shack, and lots of fighting between them as well. That was so fast that you just didn't get the annoyance and making up for it after.
Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing what the 4th is like! I'm less worried about it, though, style & directing-wise. Book 3 is really special to me so I was MUCH more concerned and worried. I don't think I'll have much to complain about in movie 4, considering the casting thus far looks great. And you're SO right! The kids are looking SO old! They'd better hurry :-)
