LotR Question

My mother asked me, and I've no idea of a full answer... so I thought I'd ask around. Does anyone know what other actors were considered for the various roles in the Lord of the Rings movies? Who was the guy who started out cast as Aragorn before they finally went with Viggo, for example?

Oh, I actually know! They originally cast Stuart Townsend as Aragorn before they went with Mortensen.

I don't know his name, but I know that they were going to give the role of Sam to some fat English man if Sean Ashton (sp?) didn't gain enough weight to pull Sam off. It killed him to do it, he is a marathon runner and is very proud of being in great shape, but he said that he would do anything for the role, including eat like a pig. He's in great shape again, by the way. I just watched 50 first dates and you couldn't tell by the bodies that the two roles were played by the same guy.
