LotR- elves?

tarotgalMy mother was watching RotK while doing the dishes tonight and just now came upstairs. She sat down on the bed looking very serious and asked. "What happened to all the elves after Helm's Deep? They made this huge thing out of showing up, and we see them for a while, but where did they go? We never see them afterwards."
After I explained that they weren't really supposed to be there in the first place, we got to thinking more about it. We really don't see the elves in the last half of the battle, do we? Did they all get killed? *gulp* Did they get smart and scamper away after so many had fallen? Did they just blend into the background and watch while the men had their glory moment that would be an important confidence booster for movie 3? Did I miss them at the pub during the honoring and then the victory celebration? *goes to look for screencaps of the drinking game to see if there are elves in the background* Or is this just one of those gaping plot holes that never occurred to me?
