A local college invited Michael Moore to speak during his upcoming tour. I was SO excited and overjoyed. That's a BIG thing for this ultra conservative area. I was sooo happy to see my city's name on the list of his tour dates when I got a mailing yesterday *G*
But, apparently (just found this out from the news 10 minutes ago) the university is UNinviting him to speak. Apparently a local republican asshole politician made a big thing out of paying him to speak (uh, yeah, that's how it works. The guy's a professional speaker) and so they're uninviting him.
Can't you just smell your freedoms being taken away? My university went through this a year or two ago, where the uni had final approval over who organizations could invite to speak and what activities could be done, etc. They were worried about terrorist uprisings and such. And after MANY debates on the subject, they realized that that wasn't free speech it was censorship and they did away with that rule almost as quickly as they created it. But HELL if you can't discuss ideas openly and freely in college where the fuck can you? That's what college is for. Learning. Thinking. Discussing. Understanding. I won't even begin to touch the dollar amount that some celebrities and speakers charge to speak, but this was nowhere near that. How the hell can you make a big thing about that? This uni is NOT tiny by any means and NOT going through massive budget problems.
Growl. I hate republicans. Hope he still comes this way and gets the floods of republicans to come out and protest him instead of working on the campaigns *G* The local republican volunteer center did some mean things to my sister's friends last week. So I'm extra sepcially mad at them. I hate republicans. I honestly don't understand how they think. I just... I don't understand how fucked up you have to be to think there's logic in such illogical concepts. I... growl. Just growl.
