When it rains...
Jan. 11th, 2005 01:49 pm...especially in California! I'm writing from work with updates...
*HUGS* To all of you who've sent me messages about my grandfather. (This week, last, in e-mail, etc.) Seems that on top of the strokes and diabetes, he has pneumonia and some sort of brain infection (??). He had a CT scan yesterday but I don't know the results. Doctors think it's likely he had a heart attack a day or two ago. My aunt and mother's cousins drove him from LA to Santa Barbara in the middle of the night during the horrible rain storm because he needed his docs in SB. He pretty much stopped breathing on the car ride over. And he was unconscious most of yesterday. But my uncle just flew out so my aunt doesn't have to take care of him all by herself. He'd been staying with her in LA since a little after Christmas when he seemed to be suffering from a stroke. And in all this craziness, my cousin (aunt's son) had to be rushed to the hospital for a day because of stomach probs and her husband had to cancel a job interview yesterday to stay home with him because, wouldn't you know it, mudslides blocked off the way from SB to LA so my aunt can't get back home at the moment. ARG! Yeah. So we've been sitting by our phone anxiously awaiting news. But it looks like Grandpa will pull through now. He's on meds and apparently doing better. So no need for my mom to fly out immediately, which is something of a relief as she's sick and worried about leaving my sister alone here as sister's depression isn't going well lately (take New Year's, for example).
But now we all have to figure out what to do. Grandpa wants to live the rest of his life in Santa Barbara, not LA (who can blame him?) so we may have to seriously start considering at retirement homes and assisted living places because he requires constant care. Which sucks because he's one of those people who prides himself on being self-sufficient and up to about a year ago he had better health than almost everyone I know. So this is a rather big step down. Bugger. Getting old just plain sucks!
So I went into work today- it was one of my early days, and there was a note from my boss on the table with instructions and saying he'd call. He called a couple hours later- turns out he and his wife flew down to Florida last night after I went home (I left around 6pm) because his mother looked like she was dying. But she's doing all right, too now.
Aparently, this is the week for close calls when it comes to family members! Yikes! What are the odds?
On a COMPLETELY unrelated note or two... I watched TROY for the first time on Sunday. Loved. I think I'll buy it. Best one-on-one fight scene I think I've ever seen in my life. And I've seen a lot. It was... gorgeous. Just gorgeous. And, as a Spartan myself, I was actually able to overlook some of the variations and additions, which I did not think I'd be able to do. I enjoyed it quite a lot. And, of course, all those lovely men in skirts. And the brotherly moments just killed me. Gods I love raw emotions like that. Yeah. Think I'll buy it.
I saw Anchor Man Saturday and yesterday again, as well. I wasn't expecting to laugh as much as I did. I loved it. TOO funny. Even if I have 'Afternoon Delight' still stuck in my head.
And as for fics... I made serious progress on Lady Korana's gift fic yesterday. It's a page or so from being done. I worked through the block and then it just started flowing beautifully. The fic has been a very welcome distraction from everything else lately. :-) It's nice to spend some time on such an easily solved, pleasurable thing in the midst of all these problems

Date: 2005-01-11 11:27 pm (UTC)Guess I'll just have to settle for falling asleep to the sounds of the ROTK:EE, and go purchase Troy when I feel up to leaving the apartment again.

Date: 2005-01-12 06:57 am (UTC)Santa Barbara is wonderful though. Always have to stop there when I go down south since that's where my mother went to school. I love LA as well but...LA floods big time. Grrr...That's why UCLA is built on a slope, everything ends up at the bottom in the quad. I live by a river, too so it's a little scary. The river only floods downtown though, so ha. Rain, rain, rain. Yup, been doing it for some time now, power cut out when I was watching Paul Bettany on a Conan re-run last night.
Oh Troy. Glad you liked it. It was pretty good. Liked Gladiator a lot better--oh, and Spartacus. But I'm old school like that. I was going to buy it as well but wound up buying Las Vegas instead. Josh Duhamel is better looking than Brad Pitt or any of those other guys in my opinion. I'm probably going to get stoned for that.
Gosh, rambled too much again! Hope everything works out with your grandfather, though. *hug*
It's actually stopped raining now...

Date: 2005-01-12 01:56 pm (UTC)On Troy front. I'm odd- my fav. of the movie was (shoot.... name blank, both on character name and on actor's name) Paris' older brother- Very hot!! That one I actually managed to see in the theater.
Anyway- hugs and sending lots of positive thoughts your way.
