Unfinished SW Challenge fic
Feb. 9th, 2005 01:59 amI thought I would post the draft (such that it is) of my greatly unfinished Star Wars annual challenge fic. For anyone who might be curious as to what I was planning and why I abandoned the idea. I so rarely explain why I give up on WIPs and this should be good evidence.
Unfinished Fic: Sometimes it Takes a Year
The idea isn't too bad... it reminded me of the Remus/Sirius fic I wrote for the winter challenge last year, only less structured. This was going to be a "snapshot" sort of look at Obi's life over a year- in which he comes into his own and falls in love with Qui. Awwww :-) At the end of each section there was going to be a journal passage by Obi. This document (notes and all) is actually 8 pages long.
The prologue was fun to write. That image wouldn't get out of my head.
Part 1 was okay- nothing special and pretty short, but I was going to add more depending on the other sections- I wanted them all to be roughly the same length. And I wanted to highlight one strong image/moment in each section.
Part 2 sucked- everything started going wonky on me. I started hating where it was going and thinking I should give up on the whole idea
Part 3 never happened- what was I thinking? This level of angst? Even if I could pull it off without sounding like a troubled middle school writer (which is highly doubtful) it would have come out of nowhere and as I don't have a background with the JA novels it probably would have sucked much much.
But all the parts with nothing have notes about what I was going to do. You can see I was keeping a list of bunnies and bolding those I accomplished, in order to keep them straight. I was going for variety in events, emotions, and experiences throughout the year- but all building towards Obi's awakening and snuggles at the end.
I am 100% certain I could not have pulled this off and I've no regrets about abandoning it. You can see elements of this in a few of the other challenge stories I wrote, though. Like the conversation in the epilogue sounding a little like Remus' & Sirius' in 'Maroon & Gold'
Anyhoo... I hardly ever write out summaries like this. Once in a while I'll skip ahead in a fic and write a scene or dialogue as it strikes me. But I only write notes this large and detailed when:
1- I know that if I don't, I'll forget the long, detailed idea and regret that later
2- I'm writing a VERY long fic that needs to have many elements (i.e. required for a challenge) and I want to be sure I don't miss anything or write things out of order
But since I DID go to all the trouble of making notes, I thought I'd share them and my thought process with you. I had a bit of a laugh reading through this just now, I assure you!

Date: 2005-02-13 08:55 pm (UTC)At this point in time I'm ready to admit it's not working for me and I'm positive that I wouldn't have been able to pull off what I had hoped. I have literally hundreds of other stories with much more potential than this. I admit, it seems great and it would have been interesting to tackle some of these scenes. But when it comes down to it, I really don't think I could have pulled it off without it sounding over-the-top. Maybe one day... but I have sooooo many WIPs that I'd much rather work on at the moment :-)
