Thank you all for your warm birthday wishes- when I'm more than half asleep I shall finish replying to all comments. But for now *HUGS*

I had a really fantastic day. Everything was good, and even my sister behaved which is astounding. Or maybe it's just that I was so happy her usual stuff didn't get to me. I don't know. LOL But it was really a great day. Normal and happy and busy and filled with love and happiness and peace and *sigh* great day.

Today was one of those days when I felt fantastic and nothing could go wrong. It was wonderful and lovely and definitely one of the best days of my life.

There was just something about the *feel* of the day today. I've always rather liked the feeling of it being my birthday… but this was a "big" one for me and I feel better about myself now than I ever have before. I just felt good all day. Right down to the tiniest details. And so I thought I'd write it up because I don't want to forget any of it.

It started out with me buying a few Star Wars items (Obi & Qui action figures) from someone on the MA list selling them online at name-your-own-price prices. I've been wanting Q&O action figures of any sort for a long while so I took the plunge. And now they're mine. Well, when I send the payment and get them in the mail. But, still, it's exciting and one more thing I can cross off my list.

I got a few gifts from online friends- including a yummy new R/S angsty but cuddly wallpaper and irresistible elf/dwarf fluff!

Then came seeing the birthdays list on ABC Word News (on in the middle of the night when nobody's watching television). As my birthday is also Tim Curry's, they caught my attention by playing the Time Warp. Yippie! So I look over and, behold, my favorite all-time female singer/songwriter, Dar Williams, was also born on April 19. How freaking awesome! And how stupid for me not knowing that before! My now ex-boyfriend even bought me a Dar CD for my birthday last year.

I decided to skip Tae Bo in favor of sleep. As it was, I was getting 4 and a half hours and working out would be an hour-long event including shower and all. Already I had trouble winding down and it took me something like 12 minutes to finally fall asleep, instead of my usual less than a minute.

I woke and fell instantly into my morning routine of getting dressed while e-mail downloads. I should have done laundry Monday, but oh well. Clean pair of jeans and a polo shirt worked just fine. I checked my mail and was inundated by happy birthday e-mails along with the normal Viagra and African money laundering spam and some Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest Master-Apprentice drabbles. They made me happy and bouncy and smiley. So much so that my 50 morning sit-ups flew right by.

After feeding the hungry cats and ignoring the sleeping puppy, I sat down to my usual breakfast of cheerios. I read my horoscope for kicks every birthday (and maybe once or twice a year besides when there's nothing else to read):
You are a product of your environment, and this year, you increase your luck by having contact with sure-fire winners. The bank statement shows success in the next seven weeks! Unusual professional circumstances are featured in May. Sweethearts test you, and you pass in June and are closer than ever. Love signs are Libra and Capricorn. Your lucky numbers are: 9, 24, 39, 35 and 20.
I kind of like it. Of course they're written to be ambiguous enough to fit anyone, and there are parts like the beginning… and end… that don't fit at all. But it was amusing all the same.

I usually allow myself 45 minutes to get up and out the door, but I was running 10 minutes ahead of schedule so I quickly loaded the digital camera batteries I had charging overnight and snapped some shots of the dogwood tree in the backyard and the cherry tree in the front yard that just started blooming Sunday. It's beautiful and I wanted to get pictures while I could. Then I headed to work, listening to my Favorite Happy Songs CD that never fails to make me happy. I seriously think EVERYONE should have a Favorite Happy Songs CD. I guess that's where the whole mp3 player/iPod trend came from. I turn it up at full volume, I admit, but that doesn't mean I don't pay close attention to everything- I'm a very defensive driver. And I passed two accidents and four emergency vehicles on the road today alone.

Got to work 5 minutes early (but still FAR earlier than I wanted to be there). There was a huge financial problem which meant getting right into the car and heading over to the bank with my boss (and my boss' mother who we try to keep busy all day as well). The bank is in a Safeway supermarket which also contains a Starbucks. Boss bought be a Grand Carmel Frappuccino which is one of my favorite drinks ever- I have, maybe, 3 a year if that.

The bank is about 3 minutes away from work, but we took the long way home. We took an hour and a half long trip into DC to drive around and look at the cherry blossoms. Most had lost their umph, unlike the tree in my parents' front yard. But there were a few bunches that were still quite stunning indeed. All the ones around the tidal basin had lost their blossoms and were green again, though. Boss' mother really enjoyed seeing them and it was a very nice, spontaneous outing- and this from the girl who hates spontaneity. I've learned to kind of expect it when it comes to my boss, though. I suppose I've learned the meaning of 'expect the unexpected', especially as I had never even heard him talk about the cherry blossoms. LOL But it was a very nice drive. Everything was so pretty and a perfect day to stay in the car- it was 80-88 degrees at times- bleh. But made for a nice warm car and pretty skies. I wish I had thought to bring my camera along with.

On the way home we stopped at one of Boss' doctor's offices so he could pick up some things and his mother and I watched television in the waiting room. Just as we walked in, they announced the new pope and as we were waiting, he came out and spoke. Excellent timing. Even if he is conservative, I still liked the timing muchly.

We got home and I set to work. Lots of round-up and a little bit of progress made on projects- some very random (like finding the adaptor to the digital camera charger) and some more planned (like things that have been on the To Do list for weeks). I felt a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. I worked pretty hard, apart from the brief pause in the afternoon where I scraped my arm on the corner of a drawer and had to go for the Neosporin and Band-Aids. But I'm always getting bruised or cut so that's no biggie. LOL

There was also a period in the day when it suddenly began to rain. It rained hard for about 2 minutes, if that, then drizzled for a minute, then stopped. I went out to breathe in the warm after-rain air. It was absolutely lovely. Bright and sunny but spitting. I looked for rainbows but, sadly, did not see any. When I left it was drizzling slightly again and everything had that wet and fresh feel. Very nice.

I drove over to Old Towne Alexandria. Had trouble finding it as it was the first time I'd ever driven on my own but the hard part was finding parking. I could have *SWORN* this was the year my best friends from high school and I agreed to meet there in a reunion sort of way. I drove through a few times and walked around a bit by the river. It's so gorgeous there. But no sign of them. Of course, it was late in the afternoon and I could have easily have missed them. Most likely, this was the wrong year (highly possible as I'm an idiot) or they didn't show because I've lost touch with them. But I had fun looking at the water and walking around the place. It's right up there in my top three favorites list with Cape Cod and Seattle.

Drove home and there was an adorable Robin hopping around the ground right beside where I park. Got home and then had to decide about dinner. I've had a craving for portabella mushrooms (since leaving college I haven't found a decent place around here with portabella mushroom burgers) so finally decided on one of my favorite places to eat: Friendly's. The place is a something of a family favorite, as well. Last time I was there was with Dad when Mom and Sister went to Cali to be with my dying grandfather. Anyway, we called and they did take out. So after waiting for sister to get offline, I got online and found the menu. We all took turns looking through it then called in an order. I also spent some quality time with the Maxwell Kitty, which was very nice.

I stayed home and watched Jeopardy while Dad went to get the food. The first round had categories which were all Broadway shows: Chicago, Cab-array, Fan-tom, Avenue "Q", etc. That was very cool. I did pretty well tonight, comparatively, and wished Tim Curry a happy birthday for the second time today when there was a question about him and the new Monty Python show "Spammalot" (which I am dying to see!).

My Colossal Bacon, Mushroom, and Swiss burger without the bacon and with a veggie burger instead of meat was delicious. Watched and discussed American Idol during dinner. What a terrible but hilarious theme- 70's dance classics. The first few lines of Queer as Folk kept going through my head every time they brought up Donna Summer. My four favorites were great, and Bo, my absolute favorite, was fantastico!

I opened cards from relatives- my grandmother on my dad's side, my uncle on my mom's, and my favorite aunt- also on my mom's side- who wrote me a multiple-page letter. And the card she sent had Flaming June (the main picture on my Realm site) on the front, so that was fantastic right there. I skimmed the letter and caught a few words but didn't read it. It was mostly about my grandfather and I'm tearing up now just thinking about it. It's my first birthday ever without him. Every year he and my grandmother would call me on the phone and wish me happy birthday. Even after my grandma died a few years ago, he still called. Okay, now I'm crying a little. But point is, I missed him and it was nice remembering the happy memories.

Then came family presents. I've had a couple presents from friends I couldn't resist opening early this weekend and expect more later this week from others, but it was nice to have a few to open on my birthday, too. The card my sister got me was a hilarious flow chart about happy birthday and cheese and… believe me, it was perfect. She pre-ordered me (or rather my mother did for her) Harry Potter 6 from Borders. I'm so VERY excited now! I have my own pretty little reserved copy ticket I can claim at 12:01am on July 16th. The card from my parents had pretty sparkly butterflies! Yay for sparkles! Inside the card my parents gave me a self-made gift certificate for a doctor's appointment. Which is good as I have no health insurance. LOL In addition, they gave me a great load of more squee-able presents: a hardback copy of Diana Gabaldon's 'Drums of Autumn' which is the only one of hers I didn't have, FAKE mangas 5 through 7, and a Tae Bo Cardio DVD. I was very happy to get the book. I was ecstatic at the mangas (my now ex-boyfriend got me #4 last year, so FAKE is my official birthday manga- LOL) and I believe I used the word 'porn' to describe the reason #7 was in plastic. After family got over its laughing shock I assured them it wasn't even as bad as the Outland book series and they gave me "oh, that's all right then" laughs. And I was overjoyed at the Tae Bo cardio DVD. I don't think I'll break it in until I have the room to move around. Right now I work out in a space that's about three feet by six feet and I can make that work since I know the routine so very well.

My birthday cake of choice was, instead, a birthday pie. My favorite pie ever- lemon meringue. It was extremely nummy. And I blew all the candles out in one very big breath which means I must get my wish. It was a good wish, too.

My father told us about a segment he heard on National Public Radio today all about a woman who ordered from the Highlander catalog (which is now Legendary Heroes, which includes Lord of the Rings, Hercules, Xena, and Conan). It's a subject of some hilarity in my house as I've had such absolutely DREADFUL experiences ordering from Highlander: the store. The telemarketers are rabid and scary and I don't want to get into the details but my experience with them is what keeps me from ordering Lord of the Rings stuff from them now. Anyway, it was a segment about Highlander… out of the blue… on my birthday! But it also cover lovely topics like what to do with legendary swords once you buy them and the lovely idea of buying TV season sets on DVD. Even more remarkable is the fact that the Highlander fan lives nearby my dearest online Highlander friend. Whoa. So unbelievably funny and coincidental this was! http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4607255

I watched Amazing Race (poor gay boys!) and Judging Amy as is usual on Tuesdays. And then I tackled a massive amount of e-mails and thank yous and cards and gifts online.

Which brings me to now. Tired, still behind on thank yous for more great gifts and comments, and typing this up while I watch 'Sideways'. It was filmed throughout Santa Barbara (where my grandparents lived) which is just lovely to see. And (I just now finished it) they read from 'A Separate Peace' at the end! See, that alone would be enough to make my day, if it weren't already filled with such loveliness.

In all, a really nice day content-wise, but I really felt good throughout. It's hard to describe but I think it all harkens back to that idea of appreciating good things when you have them, no matter how small.

I'm so glad you had a Happy Birthday!

fyi, that link you left for NPR now goes to a little one-paragraph comment about telemarketers. Any idea how to get the Highlander story? Oh, and I've had absolutely no trouble whatsoever with the Noble Collection's LOTR stuff. I have The One Ring (silver, plated in gold, on a chain), Arwen's Evenstar necklace, and the Fellowship Leaf Brooch. I even had to get the Evenstar exchanged because the first one they sent me was defective, and it was an incredibly smooth and fast transaction. I would have no problems ordering from them again in the future...and probably will at some point! *G*

I've never gotten a single call related to my LOTR purchases, nor do I recall them even asking for my phone number. I do get special offers in my email, but that's by choice.

Happy Birthday

Sounds like you had a wonderful day! Made me smile just reading about it, so I can imagine how nice it was for you. I don't think I said happy birthday earlier, so I'll say it now. Happy Belated Birthday!

Oh, and one moment of excitement I had while reading the post -- I didn't know you read Diana Gabaldon! I'm actually in the middle of 'The Firey Cross' right now! Ee, that's just one more thing we have in common. We're kindred spirits online or something. ;)

Anyway, glad you had a good day! You deserve it!
