L/G & OMC fic link
May. 1st, 2005 01:56 amI finished the sequel to 'The Uncontrollable' finally. I'm planning just to put it on my website, but there's no telling when I'll be updating it next. So I'll post the link here now. At nearly 15 pages, it's a little too long for an LJ post. I like to keep those at 10 or below.
See my notes for this story, please. And sorry, again, that there's not more sneezing. I definitely owe Lady Korana many thanks for helping to inspire this story in her feedback for the original fic (see last post on this page). It's been bouncing around in my head for months now, but only since I started working with Orin did I really get a handle on what wanted to be written.
Title: The Long Way
Author: tarotgal
Fandom: Lord of the Rings
Rating: PG for violence
Pairing: Legolas/Gimli
Disclaimer: Legolas, Gimli, and all of Middle Earth was created by Tolkien. I have no rights to any of that and do not get paid for this. Orin, however, is mine and only mine.
Summary: Orin, elf messenger, is sent out on an errand of vital importance and must contend with the weather and a stubborn dwarf, among other things.
Many Notes: This is the prequel to 'The Uncontrollable' and was inspired by Lady Korana in her feedback, though it took quite a while to get the bunny to properly cooperate. It is heavily concentrated on an original character of mine, Orin, who is featured more prominently in an unfinished non-sneezefic of mine (tentatively titled 'Secret Letters'). Hopefully he comes through well enough not to need to read that fic before this one, but if you have any questions or comments about him, I'd certainly welcome them. In addition, there isn't much sneezing in this story. Sorry about that!
(The Long Way)
Enjoy! :-)

Lengthy (as usual) fic comments
I adore this messenger elf (of course, I really like messengers in general, so I was probably biased toward him anyway), and I would love to see him included in any future stories you might choose to write.
I'm sorta undecided about his name, Orin; the meaning is very elven, but it kinda reminds me of 'The Neverending Story', as well as some of the dwarves traveling with Bilbo like Nori, Dori, Oin, Noin, etc...then again, I guess a dwarvish-sounding name is rather appropriate for this elf who is practically a Dwarf-friend now. Then again, Olorin is the Maia name for Gandalf, and that's not dwarvish, so I say, if you like the name, use it!
Any issues about name nonwithstanding, I am already quite attached to his character. He obviously loves his Lord very much, and his loyalty and job has given him a rather unique position from which to observe the relationship between Legolas and Gimli. I really liked the very practical bit about him reading the messages in case the parchment is lost during the trip, and the bit about reading it at night was an awesome reference to the invisible ink often used on elven maps and such that can only be read under moonlight, like in 'The Hobbit'. That little bit of canon really impressed me, and anchored this story deeper into Middle-earth reality.
I loved his bit about being distracted by the trees during the meeting. How wood-elfy of him! I admit, if I were just a messenger and didn't have to make any decisions for the realm, I would be tempted to drift off during meetings too. The comment about looking forward to the good meal after the meeting also helped to make Orin more real to me. I really enjoyed the stable section too, with his interaction with the horses and his thoughtfullness for Gimli's comfort.
Nice job shortening the travel time between the two locations, likely in direct response to my questions about it in the prior fic. Well done! You pulled it off and made it believeable, with Gimli's need to sleep being the main thing that would slow them down, though you'd probably have to drug me to get me to sleep on a moving horse like that! I'm guessing Gimli's just used to it by now. And I really liked the line about 'having made this trip a hundred times at least', and the way the dwarves at the caves know Orin and like him. I love the implications on how much Legolas writes to Gimli!
Now the really meaty stuff, Orin's interactions with Gimli: I love that they're tied together by mutual care and concern for Legolas. Gimli doesn't even blink twice to dropping all his plans so he can travel to Ithilien at a word from a messenger. It's nice that they're comfortable enough with each other that Gimli can joke about Legolas being a needy terror when ill, given that Legolas is probably more graceful when ill than Gimli is on a good day. So Orin's only been sick once, huh? What a shame, then, that Legolas seems to have such a terrible immune system. ;)
Your line about Legolas being the only elf Gimli would ride behind was definitely my favorite in the whole fic, and even if he does end up riding behind Orin, he's still doing it for Legolas. Gimli is such a sweet dwarf...Legolas is very lucky to have him! Actually, watching Orin interact with Gimli is not all that dissimilar, I'd imagine, to watching Legolas and Gimli in the early days of their friendship. The efforts to introduce Gimli to the horse and get him to mount without damaging his pride, the efforts taken that Gimli can rest (though I'd feel better for Gimli's safety if he were sitting in front while sleeping), and the fierce fighting spirit and coordination of efforts in that exciting troll battle were all reminiscent of the best that I associate with the L/G friendship. I admit to being happy that riding with Orin was just not the same for Gimli, though. No one can replace his Legolas, as is right.
reply, part 1
Date: 2005-05-01 08:52 am (UTC)YAY!!!!!!! *see icon*
I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting, aside for concern for Legolas and a bit of sneezing, but it sure wasn't rousing action/adventure and a new elf/dwarf friendship
ROTF Maybe I should have warned about both of those? It was a little... strange and unusual, especially as a prequel to what it was. Sorry about that!
I adore this messenger elf (of course, I really like messengers in general, so I was probably biased toward him anyway), and I would love to see him included in any future stories you might choose to write.
Now that I think about it, I've always liked messenger characters quite a lot, too. In the background, usually, but always very knowledgable and loyal...
I'm sorta undecided about his name, Orin
I must admit I did have the dwarves' names in mind somewhat when it popped into my head. Which is probaby why I liked it for him, given his straddling of the two worlds. I do, in fact, call him a dwarf-friend rather early into the unfinished fic I started with him. But I do especially like it for its meaning. Sorry about the Neverending Story reminder- I totally hadn't thought of that.
Any issues about name nonwithstanding, I am already quite attached to his character. He obviously loves his Lord very much, and his loyalty and job has given him a rather unique position from which to observe the relationship between Legolas and Gimli.
I'm very glad you like him! And as for your observational comment, see my reply below about the aforementioned other fic with him *G*
...the bit about reading it at night was an awesome reference to the invisible ink often used on elven maps and such that can only be read under moonlight, like in 'The Hobbit'.
OMGILOVEYOU!! In a few sentences you've been able to pretty much spell out the entire plot of 'Secret Letters'. Am I that transparent? LOL But that must be a good thing, considering this takes place after 'Secret Letters' and assumes the reader knows what goes on in that fic I have yet to finish. The first title of the fic was, actually 'Moon-Letters' but was changed as the word "secret" takes on a variety of meanings for the fic. The basic plot is, however, Orin making trips back and forth from Gimli to Legolas with general correspondance. There's quite a lot of curiousity about these letters from their respective "people", however, and one way Orin gets on the good sides of the dwarves is to share the letters with them. L&G are well aware of this fact and encourage it, and the letters become filled with little hints about their relationship. Basically, they use it as a way to explain to their "people" and guage their reactions before it becomes official. Of course, Orin discovers there's more than just hidden meanings in the letters, but there's actually very personal messages on each letter written in moon-letters. He doesn't share those with anyone, though. Because he's a good elf *pets*
So my little reference to this whole thing WAS in that part AND you picked up on it incredibly. I wanted to include a nod to this, but honestly didn't think ANYONE would think anything of letters being read at night. I am in awe of your relationship with the fandom and ability to pick up on such small details. I adore readers like you! *hugs*
Re: reply, part 1
Date: 2005-05-01 09:07 am (UTC)So yes, I had guessed the plot of your other Orin fic, but it still has much potential to be expounded upon. I like to imagine that before Orin discovered the secret, Legolas and Gimli were writing really, really naughty things to each other! *giggles* Must have been embarassing the first time they got caught!
reply part 2
Date: 2005-05-01 08:53 am (UTC)Poor Orin. I mean, I'm sure he cares about the goings on, but I'd seriously be bored in such a meeting if I didn't get a say and was just waiting around until the end to know if messages needed to be sent. I'm glad you didn't mind his drifting off and being distracted :-)
I really enjoyed the stable section too, with his interaction with the horses and his thoughtfullness for Gimli's comfort.
I assume, though I haven't written much of that in the other fic, that with such a busy job as a messenger he would HAVE to get to know the horses very well, and have favorites. And by now he knows Gimli well enough to be concerned about him, as well, when it comes to these sorts of things.
Nice job shortening the travel time between the two locations, likely in direct response to my questions about it in the prior fic. Well done!
Seriously? I worried on the return trip that it was too fast. I'm not sure I convinced myself that two days was sufficient when my calculations say, clearly, three as the bird flies. I tried to throw in little bits about shortcuts (which are physically impossible) and fear-motivated sprinting... but I wasn't sure the shortened travel time still worked. I'm comforted by your comments here, though. Thank you :-)
...with Gimli's need to sleep being the main thing that would slow them down, though you'd probably have to drug me to get me to sleep on a moving horse like that! I'm guessing Gimli's just used to it by now.
And exhausted and stubborn (and probably willing to sleep just to make he time go faster). So much sleeping during the days also partially explains why he's up & awake at night during 'The Uncontrollable' (at least, that's what I hoped it would explain). But you're right, I'd have a hard time sleeping, too, even if the horse had a smooth gallop.
And I really liked the line about 'having made this trip a hundred times at least', and the way the dwarves at the caves know Orin and like him. I love the implications on how much Legolas writes to Gimli!
Exactly :-) Thanks for noticing that!
Gimli doesn't even blink twice to dropping all his plans so he can travel to Ithilien at a word from a messenger.
He's a very sweet dwarf, my Gimli *G*
It's nice that they're comfortable enough with each other that Gimli can joke about Legolas being a needy terror when ill, given that Legolas is probably more graceful when ill than Gimli is on a good day.
Oh, absolutely!! (both about the joking and the being more graceful part) *G*
So Orin's only been sick once, huh? What a shame, then, that Legolas seems to have such a terrible immune system. ;)
Well, if he keeps hanging around Legolas so much, who knows? LOL I'd imagine, being out and about in the elements so often he's learn how to take care of himself rather well- which was why I had him going straight for the getting out of wet clothes and in front of the fire bit (and the wanting to keep Gimli as dry as possible, as well, throughout). But I happen to like the idea of Legolas getting sick more often, in contrast to his strength and toughness in other areas. A natural balance, so to speak.
Your line about Legolas being the only elf Gimli would ride behind was definitely my favorite in the whole fic, and even if he does end up riding behind Orin, he's still doing it for Legolas.
Oh yay!! I'm so glad you liked that part! It's a definite favorite of mine. I was thrilled when it just popped out of my fingers and onto the screen.
Re: reply part 2
Date: 2005-05-01 09:16 am (UTC)It does stretch believability, but only a tad, and that little bit I dismissed by Gimli's fuzziness and exhaustion, and because of my desire to see Legolas as soon as possible. :)
Well, if he keeps hanging around Legolas so much, who knows?
I shall refrain from being wicked and dropping bunnies about this, but boy was it tempting! It's ok, I rather like your theory about Legolas's weak immune sytem being the Valar's way of balancing out his immense strengths in other areas. And, though I like your new character, I'd still pick sniffly Legolas over him any day, no offense. *G*
reply part 3
Date: 2005-05-01 08:53 am (UTC)Perhaps a tad kinder, as Gimli has more reason now to accept elves as friends and honor their culture & select skills. But I absolutely agree with all you said here.
the fierce fighting spirit and coordination of efforts in that exciting troll battle were all reminiscent of the best that I associate with the L/G friendship
I was so worried about that scene. Had a hard time describing it and, in general, most fight scenes (even though this one was rather simple). I still can't see Legolas leaving Gimli there between the two trolls, whatever the stubborn dwarf said. But I think Orin feels obligated to follow Gimli's orders. But I agree about loving all aspects of the way L&G fight together.
I admit to being happy that riding with Orin was just not the same for Gimli, though. No one can replace his Legolas, as is right.
Yayness. Me too :-) I did want it clear that he "warmed up" to the idea a little throughout the fic. With the way he sat and touches. But that it was still not at all the same or as comfortable by any extent.
Lengthy comments part two
Date: 2005-05-01 08:25 am (UTC)Now for Legolas...wow! I almost can't put my love and lust for him into words, and I almost don't want to try. He really didn't have anything to do, plot wise, other than call for Gimli and wait while suffering, but DAMN does he do that well! The whole fic is practically a giant build-up to the end, starting with a little sniffle, a muffled sneeze, a rub of the nose, and then the constant worrying by Orin about the essence of time and what bad shape Legolas might be in several days later, and boy is he right! That last scene where he's trying to hold council and failing miserably is so in character for Legolas, and definitely more than worth the price of admission!
I laughed like crazy when I saw all the empty chairs around Legolas! Whether they all chose to shy away, or Legolas commanded them to maintain their distance, it still totally cracked me up! And do all elves have sneeze-radar or is Orin especially perceptive? Either way, it's a useful talent when one's Lord is so illness-prone. *G* And the sneezing and stuffy talk...*sigh*...you're so very, very good to me, tg. Legolas was trying so very hard to maintain composure, but it was just too much for him by that point. It was a magnificent display, and one that made my face flush and grow warm each time I reread it. No one writes them like you do, and I feel incredibly lucky that you like to write L/G stories. It was wonderful to see Legs and Gimli together at the end...almost as much a relief to your audience as I'm sure it was to the characters involved. The head-resting/hair-stroking was so sweet, and I love how Legolas followed Gimli unquestionably as he led him to bed after he'd refused to do that very thing just a minute ago at his council members' advice. Stubborn to the end, just like his dwarf! (And his father too, I imagine.) No handkerchief again, I noticed...he had to use Gimli's. *G*
Illness aside, Legolas really does seem like a kind and caring Lord, and one to whom I'd readily give my undying loyalty. I would assume, as long-lived as elves are, that the line between Lord and subject would get blurred over the years with friendship, and I'd like to think that Legolas has several good friends at his colony that he can talk to when Gimli, Aragorn, or Faramir are busy with their own concerns. It'd be awesome to see Orin function in this capacity eventually! Speaking of Faramir, couldn't he possibly be at some of these meetings, as he also lives in Ithilien? Just a thought, in case you want to write any future Ithilien stories.
One typo noted: Gimli grumbled unhappily, then he looked up, showing his distress and concerned. 'Concerned' should be 'concern'.
Nice job tying this fic together with the first part, what with the steadily worsening weather leading to the big storm, and Legolas repeating his deliciously stuffy complaint about disliking being sick. It was a lovely way to bring us full circle, and I definitely plan on rereading that first fic as soon as I post this reply. Thank you again, for an awesome fic and an intriguing new character!
reply part 1
Date: 2005-05-01 09:30 am (UTC)*G* He definitely grew on me a lot during those passages, too.
I was quite jealous when Gimli got to snuggle under his cloak...and I was almost jealous for Legolas that his dwarf was getting some elf snuggling with someone else. *G*
Legolas will understand, I think. It was in Gimli's best interest, after all. I wrote a long passage in one PWP where Gimli's under Legolas' cloak while on horseback during a snow storm. I can't remember if that was in a sneezefic or one of my many unfinished non-sneezefics. But that's where that concept came from. I stole it from myself. Bad tg!
Now for Legolas...wow! I almost can't put my love and lust for him into words, and I almost don't want to try.
That's MORE than good enough. I know JUST what you mean! *blush* Thank you!!
He really didn't have anything to do, plot wise, other than call for Gimli and wait while suffering, but DAMN does he do that well!
LMAO!! So true.
The whole fic is practically a giant build-up to the end...
I was thinking about this fic as I was sorting through old papers tonight. Thinking about how the journey itself has its rise & fall as every story's supposed to, but the real climax isn't the trolls, but in Legolas finally getting his dwarf, admitting he's sick, and accepting care. It's all about what you *don't* see where Legolas is concerned, but I was nervous that what little there was of him at the end wasn't enough to get it across to readers what he'd been going through in his waiting.
That last scene where he's trying to hold council and failing miserably is so in character for Legolas, and definitely more than worth the price of admission!
*G* I'm very glad it did not dsappoint, after all the build-up. If I were reading this fic, I would have IMMEDIATELY skipped straight to the end bits, I must admit. But the adventure was fun to write and I hoped maybe a few people out there would feel rewarded and relieved when they got to that part... assuming I wrote enough of it. So I feel validated by your fb here! Thank you!
I laughed like crazy when I saw all the empty chairs around Legolas! Whether they all chose to shy away, or Legolas commanded them to maintain their distance, it still totally cracked me up!
LOL! I'm definitely glad you got a kick out of that visual! That bit, and him getting his own water, were sort of my nods to this line in 'The Uncontrollable': "Legolas refused to have any of the other elves look after him for fear they’d catch his cold". Just my attempt at being consistent. And I wanted those to, obviously, contrast with how Legolas immediately gives into Gimli's care.
And do all elves have sneeze-radar or is Orin especially perceptive?
Excellent question. When reading your feedback I was going to reply that it's just Orin at the moment... but now I'm not so sure I want to answer that way. I mean "the other elves" certainly seem concerned (though at the end they would have to be blind & deaf not to notice) but I wonder, for immortal beings, if "mortal" things like illnesses stand out to them as though they have a special/selective sense.
Re: reply part 1
Date: 2005-05-01 10:11 am (UTC)reply part 2
Date: 2005-05-01 09:31 am (UTC)Oh, yes, absolutely ;-)
*G* And the sneezing and stuffy talk...*sigh*...you're so very, very good to me, tg.
I assure you, that was written all just for me. But, as always, I'm more than thrilled you have such good/similar taste when it comes to sneezing. *G*
Legolas was trying so very hard to maintain composure, but it was just too much for him by that point. It was a magnificent display, and one that made my face flush and grow warm each time I reread it. No one writes them like you do, and I feel incredibly lucky that you like to write L/G stories.
Awwww! Thank you so much! I worry sometimes about repeating myself, given how many sneezefics I write. But if little bits like these are still nummy to readers, then I feel much better :-)
It was wonderful to see Legs and Gimli together at the end...almost as much a relief to your audience as I'm sure it was to the characters involved.
I think Orin definitely has a soft spot for the two of them, too. I suppose that's obvious, though, considering how determined he was to get them together :-) But, yes, I totally agree with you. I was relieved to get to that part of the story while writing. It had been written out in my mind since the beginning scene.
The head-resting/hair-stroking was so sweet
That's a fluffy favorite of mine in this fic, too *G*
...and I love how Legolas followed Gimli unquestionably as he led him to bed after he'd refused to do that very thing just a minute ago at his council members' advice
Well, that's because he knew he wouldn't actually feel better, no matter what he did, until Gimli was there looking after him. So he might as well fight it and go on with his work... or try to, at least.
But I'm glad Legolas' reaction came through so clearly. I re-wrote that bit a few times in hopes of making it clear that all Gimli had to do was suggest it with a nudge and Legolas would obey in an instant.
Stubborn to the end, just like his dwarf! (And his father too, I imagine.) No handkerchief again, I noticed...he had to use Gimli's. *G*
Did I ever leave FB for that little elf study thingy? Gah, I'm so behind! *cries* One thing I MEANT to say in feedback for the comment about Legolas not having a handkerchief of his own in that fic was that didn't *have* to carry one because he trusted Gimli to always have one and provide for him. And perhaps he rather likes the attention and having Gimli's help in a rather unconventional sort of way. Sort of an unspoken caring that goes beyond what normal couples would share. Ugh, I'm not explaining it right at all. But the "needy" Legolas here definitely had to be without his own handkerchief.
reply part 3
Date: 2005-05-01 09:31 am (UTC)I confronted that while writing this fic, actually. I spent a while thinking about what sort of a lord Legolas would be. And after his many experiences, especially with the Fellowship, I concluded that he would be, as you said, a very kind and caring lord who is concerned with the thoughts of his elves as well as their happiness and well-being. I like to think of him as treating them as equals and friends, even if- in the end- he gives orders and they follow (or they know their place when it comes down to it, like when he's sick and a graceful terror *G*)
And you're absolutely right about the longesvity. You can't work with someone for hundreds of years and NOT get to know them as a person/elf.
and I'd like to think that Legolas has several good friends at his colony that he can talk to when Gimli, Aragorn, or Faramir are busy with their own concerns. It'd be awesome to see Orin function in this capacity eventually!
I agree- I like to think of Legolas as opening up to those around him, too. Why else would he really want to spend time amongst his people between the end of the war and the travelling & sailing off?
As for Orin... I'm tredding lightly with him. I don't want to make him an end-all solution for that sort of thing. But he definitely loves his lord and cares deeply about him on many levels. And I can see him wanting to be a shoulder or lend an adorable pointy ear from time to time as needed.
Speaking of Faramir, couldn't he possibly be at some of these meetings, as he also lives in Ithilien? Just a thought, in case you want to write any future Ithilien stories.
You can count on it. I love Faramir. I don't write him nearly enough.
One typo noted: Gimli grumbled unhappily, then he looked up, showing his distress and concerned. 'Concerned' should be 'concern'.
Gah! This makes edit number 7 that I've made to the document since I uploaded it (changes due to several typos and the fact that I, somehow, forgot to write a summary for it! LOL!) Thank you much!!!
Please let me know what you think about it afterwards. Even though the stories are VERY different in approach, I really did try my best to bind the two together in a lot of ways. I'm very glad you caught the line about him disliking being sick *G* Thank you for your comments here!
Thank you again, for an awesome fic and an intriguing new character!
And thank YOU for your feedback about him, and such incredibly thoughtful and lengthy feedback as well as your close reading. It is a pure joy to be able to share my writings with someone who gets to much out of them. *tries not to cry from happy* I really appreciate your feedback on all aspects!!!
Re: reply part 3
Date: 2005-05-01 10:00 am (UTC)He rubbed a slender finger beneath his nose and sniffled very light.
'Light' should be 'lightly'. I was too distracted by the mental images generated to pick this one up first time through. :-)
His Lórien was tough and could withstand anything quite well.
I think you're missing the word 'cloak' after 'His' here.
And then this stuck out at me, though I'm not really sure it's an error:
After the meeting I am famished.
I'd place a comma after 'meeting', if it were me.
Also, I'd like to add that I find Legolas's comment that he needs Gimli 'yesterday' very adorable!
Rereading 'The Uncontrollable'
Date: 2005-05-01 10:27 am (UTC)Reread 'The Uncontrollable' just know. You're correct, they're nothing alike in tone, but they really do mesh well together. The only line that sticks out is the one line I had issues with before: And he was glad he’d been sent for the previous day, when Legolas had first felt his cold coming on. Again, it's that pesky time issue. Other than that, everything works fine, though I do confess to being slightly disappointed that Legolas wakes up completely healthy. *G* But it does make more sense in the context of the prequel, where he's already been ill for 4-5 days.
Re: Rereading 'The Uncontrollable'
Date: 2005-05-01 10:35 am (UTC)And, yes, I wanted to write this fic to help explain his being healthy in the morning, just like you point out. But I understand about the disappointment. Kind of feels like, even with two fics, the yummy middle part's been removed from the story, doesn't it? Or, at least, that's how it feels to me.
I'm glad you think they mesh well together, regardless of tone. I like to think that's mostly attributed to Orin's POV vs. Gimli's POV
As for bed... a Remus/Sirius bondage bunny seized me an hour ago *gulp* But I'm heading off now that the sun's rising ;-) Goodnight to you, too. Thanks for the lovely detailed feedback (I've read it all, and edited the document online, just too tired to reply. But thank you!) And sweet dreams!

I loved it tg...so many wonderful story elements all in one place!
I really enjoyed Orin's character; you really mapped him out well for a first story-I hope we get to see him again.
But the elf stuffy talk *swoons* I can't say enough...and the lovely image of Gimli striding into the meeting room...and the cuddling and hair stroking...*sighs happily*
I'm sorry this is so short...I'm in the middle of quiche preparation*g*
Great story!
