HP4 Brief/General review

tarotgalJust a quick review of the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In short, I loved it.
-I liked it a lot more than the POA movie- it managed to be artistic and stunning and STILL follow book canon for the most part
-It was still way too short for my liking- with HUGE chunks taken out and events abridged to fit the running time. But I can understand the edits (unlike POA's cuts)
-I would have liked to have seen Padfoot Returning, but I understand how it could be cut. *pets Pads* Would have liked some Bill and Charlie, too, but, again, I understand they couldn't be there.
-I absolutely HATED Dumbledore throughout most of the movie. WTF is up with him being all angry and shaking Harry???
-I thought the trio dynamics were just perfect (they're still hamming it up a little too much for me at times, but I'm used to it by now)
-Bouncing ferret scene- freakin' awesome!!!
-Cedric was a dream. Viktor was to die for (I want to live on the Durmstrang ship pleeeeeeease!)
-There were a TON of parts that I had to bite my thumb during to keep from giggling or squeeing. Which means I REALLY enjoyed them. There were little surprises I loved and tons of slash-worthy moments and Cedric in general was everything I was hoping he would be.
-At the beginning of the Hedge Maze sequence, I started crying. Halfway through, I was sobbing. And by the end of the movie I'd been through 4 tissues and had to keep my hand over my mouth to keep my sobs quiet.
-I didn't have trouble with Voldy. I was worried I might find him sexy, considering the actor portraying him. But I definitely needn't have worried
-It was beautiful and stunning and very well done, I thought. That was JUST the movie I wanted to see. Well, maybe add about 30 minutes to it and it would have been PERFECT.
On a whole, I loved it. *sigh* Fantastic movie. I didn't expect to like it so much, but I do. Good for them! I spent the whole 40 minute drive home crying about Ced. Gods that was hard. I knew I'd cry but I REALLY didn't expect to get so attached to him! He was SO perfectly done, so in character. He makes me so proud to be a Hufflepuff!

PPS- I Bookcrossed and left a copy of HP1 at the theater ;-) heehee! And I mailed a bunch of packages on the way home.

i totally agree with your feelings about Dumbledore. When he jumped on Harry after his name came out of the cup, I was like, "What the fuck!" that is SO out of character for him--it just proves how much I dislike Michael Gambon as D.Dore. :-/
I'm not sure it was Michael so much as the later books, honestly. Dumbledore gets so much more emotional and angry as the books go on that it felt like they were trying to go in that direction already. And though Dumbledore is mostly calm in the books, he does get all angry at Fudge with his "You are blinded by your love of the office you hold" speech. So maybe they were trying to get a little emotion out of Albus in other ways since that particular part was cut. I don't know how much of it was Michael and how much was the screenwriter or director... but I really didn't like him in this movie. Yelling and shaking Harry was just so out of character at that moment- you're so right. And that comment about people changing in the maze- WTF was that supposed to be?

I would have liked to have heard Sirius say it when he was voicing that letter he wrote to Harry... *G* But oh well.
but yeah, the cuts they did for this movie were a lot more understandable than POA, though I also agree that cerain bits were very choppy
Yep. Like most people, I'm in the "make the dragon task a little shorter and put in just a little more explaination and transition between scenes" camp. I'm glad you agree about the cuts as well. It's sad when some things have to go... but they picked much better things this time.

Other than the rather brutal cut from the Quidditch World cup stadium to the tents in flames (we take the time to introduce the teams but don't show even a sec of the game, not even to show Krum being awesome...boo, hiss!) I loved it! I still don't like Hermione's dress, and I regret not being able to see Narcissa Malfoy, but those are minor items that in no way affected my admiration for how well they managed to compact and streamline the plot and still keep canon mostly intact. I'm thrilled that the S.P.E.W. stuff was left out, and the ferret scene was absolutely priceless! Not enough Snape or McGonagall by far though :(
And I cried. I didn't expect to, and I didn't when I read the book but the movie got me. Strangely enough, it was not sadness for the loss of Cedric that did it, though he was sweet and adorable and I'd have loved to see more of him. It was seeing the complete and utter shattering of Harry's innocence, and when I saw him sobbing on Cedric's body I felt like I'd been kicked in the chest. That's when I lost it, though the tears didn't last very long, but it still was visually quite powerful. I'd already suspected it, but this seals it for me: GOF is my favorite HP book and movie, hands down.
The fact that they catered to most of my weaknesses didn't hurt either. Sweaty angsty Harry in Pajamas, Scar Pain Harry, Scratched-up Arm-in-a-Sling Harry, Cold Tired Wet Harry, Bare-chested Scratched-up-Shoulder Bathing Harry, Blood Soaked Harry, Sobbing Harry, etc...YUMMM!!

Movie: Wow! That was great!
TG's mind: Wait... was that just the intro and the real match is tomorrow? Did I fall asleep and miss the actual match or something? What was the point in all that build-up if you're not going to show the actual match???

I regret not being able to see Narcissa Malfoy
Apparently if you look hard, you can see her in the graveyard scene amidst the other death eaters. Some people online say that's Bella but HELLO! Bella's still in Azkaban! So it's got to be Cissy. I don't remember her, personally (I was crying so probably missed her split second appearance) but apparently she is indeed there.

I completely agree. Kowles did a great job cutting what needed to be cut while still keeping to canon and keeping the right feel to the movie.

I loved it for it, of course. But then I went all naughty and kept repeating in my head "I always KNEW Draco wanted to get into Crabbe's pants". Soooooo delightful. LMAO

I agree. Would it have killed them to have shown Snape's dark mark as well? I know they mentioned his allegience at the trail but it would have been more powerful for Harry to have SEEN Snape branded with the dark lord's mark, I think.

ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY. I agree with you so completely. Harry seeing real death for the first time, right in front of him, someone he knew and admired... technically BECAUSE of him... and to lie there sobbing in front of EVERYONE. I was shaking with sobs at that point. Everyone's cheering and clapping and it takes them SO long to realize that not only is something wrong, but something is VERY wrong. It's a very powerful mirror to the fifth book, really. But it was incredibly powerful to actually SEE Harry lose it like that. My heart really went out to Harry there.
And I have to agree- I think this is definitely my favorite movie yet. The first one was close, I think (especially the version with all the added scenes). But this one's my favorite. But PoA remains my favorite book because of Remus and Sirius.

Oh absolutely. I was a bit amazed they went so far as that bath scene... I mean with Myrtle UNDER the water with him! O_O But I wasn't complaining. And my "Oooohhhh! Wet boys!" reaction was in overdrive after the second task. MUCH love there. But, yes, I definitely agree with you fully about all the nummy Harrys!!! :-)
