New story notice
Jun. 3rd, 2006 08:32 pmI finished up another Strokes fic today. Fastest 21 pages I've ever written, I've got to say. I couldn't get it out of my head. It's very heavy on the hockey, but knowledge of the sport isn't needed to follow it.
Title: On Ice
Rating: PG-13 (no sex, but there is a bit of swearing because hockey players can be like that)
Summary: Jamie has a hard day on the ice. Hockey players don't get colds... despite evidence to the contrary. He is resolute in getting through the day's very important events.
A year or more ago I wrote a story entitled 'Survey' which takes place after this story, with this story in mind. But I only just got around to finally writing this. Also, I owe a bit of thanks to the book Complete Hockey Instruction by Dave Chambers. Thank goodness I picked it up at the last library book sale! :-)
The whole series, such as it is, can be found here: http://tgsrealm.beastlet.com/Strokes.html

Date: 2006-06-04 04:40 am (UTC)I've owed you fb for forever on your Strokes fics. I think I've read them all now and I was excited to find a new one.
I loved Jamie trying so hard not to admit he was sick and everyone else pretending not to notice. I also loved the whole "Hockey players don't catch colds" part. I love sick guys not admitting there sick until they absolutely have to.
The anniversary date was so sweetly romantic, and the sneezing was just perfect - very yummy:)
By the way the other Strokes are wonderful too. I loved Coyote and Marty :) And there really is something very yummy about Nik.

Date: 2006-06-04 06:15 am (UTC)This was so nice :) I loved all your hockey talk - that's how I am with my baseball :).
heehee! I've been meaning to recommend Kyle's Bed & Breadfast to you. It's a gay comic strip with a few gay baseball players. I'd be happy to loan you my book if you decide it might be something you'd enjoy. The artist/writer used to draw baseball comics, so he's a huge fan of baseball as well (and, luckily, of hockey, too! One of his newer characters is obsessed with hockey. heehee!) Anyway, I thought I'd recommend it to you in case.

I have some VERY heavy, life-changing storylines planned for them in 2006, so I really wanted to get the older ones I had planned/started done before working on the new ones. And a few days ago I just HAD to work on On Ice. *G* I'm glad you were happy to find a new one! I just added a small timeline to help organize the fics, and I wrote up a page of character descriptions, as well.

They're good guys. ANd they know Jamie would box their ears if they said something about it. Except Sweetie. Sweetie can get away with anything...

I'm afraid I didn't make that up. Hockey players are NOTORIOUS for playing through anything. Fevers of 104, concussions, broken legs/ribs/arms/hands, you name it. The Oilers (who are in the finals this year and who ARE going to win the cup in four games) actually had a bad flu going around their org during the playoff. At least a third of the team had it at the same time. They fumigated the locker room several time to try to kill it off. And the goalie actually spent intermissions getting sick to his stomach and then going right out and playing a fabulous game. And my favorite thing is all the code words they use for illnesses. Like 'flu' usually means concussion or any above-the-waist injury. I must do a fic about those some time.

Thanks. I realized a quarter of the way through that I'd never really written Jamie before (at least, nothing this long). So it was interesting trying to find his voice. I'm glad you didn't think it was too cheesy. I must admit I listened to The Time of My Life at least 15 times while writing the end- and I had it stuck in my head one whole day during work. LOL

I'm so happy you like Coyote and Marty. Coyote is a personal favorite of mine, if you hadn't noticed.
Nik... everyone loves Nik. I don't know why! Sure he's sweet and gorgeous... but he's a complete enigma. I don't know very much about him. I only figured out his connection with Sweetie a month or so ago. But maybe the mysteriousness is what makes him interesting to read about? As the writer, though, he's hard to deal with!
Thanks so much for the feedback! :-) I'm so happy to hear you've read & enjoyed the series thus far.
