Part 12: Breakfast in Bed
James Potter woke the next morning in a mix of warm and cold, a mix of comfortable and disoriented. His eyelids were heavy but he pulled them open. He found himself in bed, with his friends surrounding him. One on each side and Peter sleeping across his legs. Surrounded by their caring, he might feel sick but at least he wasn’t miserable and alone. Definitely not alone. Remus and Sirius, especially, were a little too familiar with him, and James presumed that they thought they were sleeping with just each other. “Shite,” he laughed softly. However, there was also a wet sensation upon his middle as though… “Shite!” This time, he exclaimed loudly.
The others woke. Peter came to sleepily, but both Remus and Sirius sat bolt upright.
“What is it?” Sirius asked.
“What’s wrong?” Remus asked at exactly the same time.
James’ cheeks were bright red. “I think I wet the bed,” he whispered.
Remus felt the wetness as well, and knew what it was. He burst out laughing and rolled over, recovering the empty bowl from the floor. Sirius explained about what had transpired the night before and Peter got up to find another set of fresh sheets.
“You should change,” Remus told James. He pressed his hand to James’ forehead. “Warm, but not burning up. That’s an excellent sign. After you change, I want to take your temperature.”
“And then,” Sirius declared, “Breakfast in bed!”
James smiled and went for his clothes, changing quickly and then climbing back into a warm and dry bed. He settled in and then helped himself to the tissues. “hahhhShooo! Ahhhh-Chooo! Choo!”
Remus shook the thermometer, making sure it was at room temperature. He chuckled. “It seems to me like you sneeze just to avoid this thermometer.”
Now that he was up and about, his nose was running freely. And as his nose ran, it tickled. “ahhhhShooo! H’Shooo! Hahh…” He rubbed a tissue at his nose, but that didn’t help. “hahh-HAHShoo!” He blew his nose repeatedly and Remus waited patiently until James was finished. Then he slid the thermometer into James’ mouth and did more waiting.
“So you’re still feeling pretty sneezy?” James rolled his eyes and nodded. “Everything else the same? Throat scratchy? Head hurts?” James nodded at those as well, and Remus didn’t look happy about the news.
At least Remus was pleased to find James’ fever had dropped several points overnight. James was just pleased to find Sirius bearing breakfast. There was oatmeal with bananas and two tall glasses of orange juice for James. The other Marauders ate from a container of scones and muffins Sirius had acquired at the same time. But James was happy with his breakfast, even if they kept pushing him towards the orange juice.
“hehhhShoo! hahhh-” James squinted at his breakfast to be sure it had not spilled. He saw that his friends were all watching out for him with levitation spells. As the bowl and glasses hovered above his head, James reached for a tissue and let himself sneeze all he needed. “hahhh-Shoo! hahhh… hahhhChooo! Hehh-hehhSHOO! KShoo!”
“Bless you!” Peter was the first to say. The bowl he was concentrating on levitating teetered in mid-air and James plucked it out and set it down on his tray. He got the two glasses next, and gave them all nods of thanks.
“That reminds me,” said Remus, around his chocolate chip scone. He held it between his teeth as he crawled over and retrieved the black ledger. He made a dot on the page and drew a line, showing that James’ temperature was just a little higher than average.
Everyone seemed quite pleased, James included. Though James was still a bit unclear about the details of the night. He didn’t really remember much of anything after his hot shower. “How bad—” he started to ask, but Sirius cut him off.
“You don’t want to know, Prongs. Just know that you’re looking a lot better now.”
“hehhh-Chahhh!”
“But not completely out of the woods yet,” Sirius finished. He pulled the ledger over and turned it around, flipping through the pages until he found the start of the list of remedies they’d compiled.
Curious, James leaned forward to catch a glimpse. But Remus slid the tissue box over to block his view. “Finish up your orange juice before your tea gets cold.”
His nose tickling again, James pulled another tissue from the box. “Tea? Hahh… Bore tea?”

Date: 2006-06-20 05:35 am (UTC)I just love the marauders as a big group of huggers :-) LOL! Seriously, I love writing them like this... I'm glad you enjoyed the dynamic as well. Poor Jamie. Especially once more of the contents of the ledger are made known...
