Part 13: Yarrow Tea
James’ mouth hung open as tickles traveled down his nose. He hid behind a tissue as his breathing hitched and body shuddered forward. “hahhh-Shooo! Ahhhhhh-KShooo! AhhhChooo!”
“Yarrow tea,” Peter said, with a nod, as James got a new tissue and wiped his nose. “The books say this is one of the best teas to drink when you have a cold. It’s been used all around the world for hundreds of years to fight colds.”
“As well as fevers and headaches,” Remus added. “Of course, it’s best taken an hour before eating, so we’re going to have to feed you again in about an hour.”
Sirius used a warming spell on the mug to make sure it was warm, or the tea wouldn’t work as well. Then he took away James’ breakfast tray and handed him the steaming mug. “You can sip it, but drink it all while it’s still warm.”
James took a sip and made a face. They’d used a little honey, but all the books agreed with Remus that sugar wasn’t good to add when someone was sick, so they’d stayed away from that. But the prospect of feeling better was enough to keep James drinking, especially when he felt so ill. Besides, it looked like his friends were going to murder him if he didn’t. “What tibe is it?” James asked, sounding stuffy.
“Not quite eight,” Peter answered quickly.
“We had hoped you’d sleep in longer, Prongs,” Sirius said with a tired sort of laugh.
“But at least now we can get to work on these remedies,” Remus finished, his finger sliding down the page in the ledger, which he had turned around so he could read it properly.
James smirked at how his friends were acting as though they had one mind. In a way, he supposed they did. One mind, one purpose. And though he was a little worried about why they wouldn’t let him read the list they’d worked on, he trusted them to find something that would work.
“hahhh… hahhShooo!” The tea sloshed in the mug, and just a few drops spilled onto James’ finger. He licked it, and then drank more quickly. James sniffled and reached for another tissue. Remus already had one for him. “Thags.”
“Drink,” Remus said, patting his shoulder, then getting up. “I’m going to go get a few ingredients. Peter?” Peter was at his side in an instant, holding their schoolbags.
James drank, as ordered, and looked quizzically at Sirius. Remus and Peter were gone in a flash.
Immediately, Sirius closed the ledger. He hugged it to his chest and sat back against the headboard, right against James’ side. He put his head on James’ shoulder and yawned. “Won’t make you do anything I wouldn’t do, myself.”
James, halfway through a sip, coughed out the tea in his mouth, into the cup. He coughed a few extra times in surprise and to get rid of the irritation his reaction had caused. “That’s exactly what I’b worried about!” he exclaimed with a laugh. He tilted his head to the side and rested it against Sirius’. When it came to it, though, he knew they were just doing it for his own good. And they’d certainly gotten him this far, what with the fever and the force-feeding and the Polyjuice switch. “Sniff! Sniff! Add I was telling the truth before. I swear I’ll hex you if you tell be dot to worry.”
Sirius chuckled and handed James another tissue. “Then I’ll just tell you to blow your nose and finish your tea.” Sirius grinned. “And think of Lily.”
James nodded and smiled. Following the advice in the opposite order, he gulped down the rest of the tea and then blew his nose. He rubbed his nose with the tissue for a few minutes and then blew again.
Then he blinked repeatedly and sat up straighter. “Sirius… I feel a little funny.”
Sirius sat up as quickly as he had that morning. He slapped a hand against James’ forehead and his grey eyes darted up and down James as though looking for something. “Are you nauseous? Itchy?” Sirius was almost to the point of panicking.
James sniffled and shook his head. “Doe…” He blinked more.
“Sometimes people have horrible allergies to this stuff,” Sirius explained. “But we’ve used yarrow in potions class before. It makes Remus sneeze his head off—”
James rolled his eyes. “What doesd’t?”
Sirius continued, “But you’ve never broken out in a rash or anything, so we thought you were safe and could have the tea.” He felt James’ cheek, turning his hand over to use the palm, then the back, then the palm again to gauge temperature roughly. In addition to battling cold symptoms, the yarrow was commonly used to help someone sweat out a fever, so the fact that James was a little bit warmer wasn’t too disturbing. “What feels funny?”
Shrugging, “I dod’t… Sniff! SNIFF! I feel like I’ve had a few too bady Butter Beers.”
Sirius grinned. “Oh. That sort of funny.” He sat back, arms bent and hands folded behind his head. “Yeah, that’s also sometimes a side effect. It’ll wear off eventually.” Sirius grinned. They’d all hoped the tea might have that effect on him, which is why they’d used twice as much yarrow than was required for a normal cup of tea. Being a little relaxed and out of it would certainly make what they were going to put James through a whole lot easier.

but I loved that part. I just love the extra sneezing references.
