Pirates- Arrrrr!
Jul. 23rd, 2006 04:21 pmWent to see Pirates 2 last night (with my father, I'm such a dork). Tried to drag sister along but she said she didn't want to see it because she'd heard it wasn't that good, and then she gave a rant about how historically inaccurate Disney makes things... Um, yeah. Because we all know pirate ghosts (or is that ghost pirates?) should be able to float around and fly, right? And there wasn't any of that in the first movie! *headdesk*
Anyway *I* enjoyed the movie lots. It wasn't as magical as the first one, but I think watching the two (and, eventually, all three) all together would make for a very consistent and enjoyable time. If they'd changed things up, done different things with the characters, or left out certain jokes the movies wouldn't make sense as a series. But this felt like just another chapter in the fandom. So of course I enjoyed it. Lots of nummy and lots of funny and lots of action and lots of potential for h/c... and the three-way swordfight really impressed me. I've seen a Hell of a lot of swordfights in my day (more than hundreds) but I've never seen anything quite so interesting as that particular three-way, seriously. Props to their swordmaster!
Anyhoo, if you want to discuss here, feel free. Just make sure you mention if there are spoilers in your post.

More specifically, I can't stop thinking about Will Turner. I was seriously impressed with how much Orlando has grown as an actor since POTC:COBP. Many, many people on LJ have commented, and I totally agree, that Will's character was one of the better parts of this movie. The boy has grown into a man, thankfully still with that stubborn sense of honor and loyalty toward those he loves (that occasionally causes him to do stupid things...brave, but stupid), but what really impressed me was his ability to take charge of a situation. He commanded the pirates like a natural leader, and his tactical skills were awesome too. Way to analyze the first kraken attack and learn from it, Will! Orlando had me much more convinced of his leadership abilities here than he did in Kingdom of Heaven, that's for sure.
I don't have as much time as I'd like to discuss the rest of the movie now, as I'm meeting friends in a few minutes to see 'Lady in the Water'. ( I couldn't sway them to another viewing of pOTC2, sadly *G*).
But the Hurt/comfort and angst quotient of this movie was astronomical, especially when it comes to poor Will. Utterly soaked to the skin no less than eight or nine separate occasions (yes, I counted!), two blows to the head resulting in unconsciousness, and one drugged dart to the neck....plus the whipping, of course. I was flabbergasted when I saw that they were actually going to go through with the flogging. I never thought I'd actually get a chance to see stuff that's so prevalent in fanfics actually put on the screen for us like that! Will Turner was already absolutley smoking HOT in this movie, but the H/C stuff damn near did me in! *G*
The scene with him huddled in the blanket, dripping wet (again), holding the warm drink after he was rescued had me sliding down in my movie seat, close to whimpering in pleasure. If this movie doesn't beg for fill in the blank fanfic, I don't know what does. His poor back needs to be tended too, and he and Liz need to have some serious conversations and soon! *sigh* I love this movie. Not as much as the first, and I would have been happy without the entire cannibal sequence, but I still can't help but love it.

OMG girl, then you've totally got to see the Hornblower series! (But I know what you mean, it being a Disney film and it being Orli and all) Still, I had Horatio Hornblower flashbacks at that point in the movie (though there's five times as much shivery and wet and hurting in Hornblower, easily... plus the nudity... LOL).
ANYWAY...

I completely agree. Of course, his few lines and concealed emotions in LotR doesn't allow him to show a ton of skills on the acting front... and I haven't seen Elizabethtown (saw the trailer with my aunt right after my Grandpa's service and we both broke down crying- I'm not emotionally in a place where I can watch it yet)... but he's definitely much improved and that's obvious to see. Plus I agree about the character growth. Go Will! I was really excited about his interactions with his father, as well.

You're very right about all the h/c. And that particular image was a killer. *wants to snuggle* I'm so impressed you counted the "utterly soaked" moments. LOL! So nummy.
I hope you have a good time seeing Lady in the Water! I really want to see it but think I'll wait for the DVD so I don't get completely freaked out. I absolutely adore M. Night, though. He rocks. I am SO impressed with his creativity (except, um, maybe not so much with the scary bedtime stories? YIKES!)

Date: 2006-07-23 11:54 pm (UTC)As for the hurt/comfort: I saw it with a bunch of friends, one of whom was the friend I told you about who we jokigly call a blood fetishist. On a funny sidenote, at my birthday party around 4 in the morning she tried to introduce me to the fanfiction genre of hurt/comfort. Yeah Melissa, I've never heard of it. I was sitting next to my best friend (who last night I discussed hurt/comfort with) and she kept saying "Aww, poor Will," to which I would respond "I will fix him."
Seriously though, the scene with him with his blanket? OY!! And (SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER)
getting whipped? Again with the oy!
I actually posted a fic on sneezefic for POTC 2, so if you want to read something, chek it out now that you're immune to spoilers.

LMAO! I love you :-) "OY!!" Soooooo much with the yes :-)
Thank you for the reminder! I put it in the archive folder but didn't even look at it because I didn't want to be spoiled. Then I forgot it was there! I'll read it right after I deal with the plot bunny for this week. Thanks!
